Advances in the neurotoxicity of ecological pesticide maneb: mechanisms and implications for human health.

Maneb, a typical dithiocarbamate pesticide, is widely used in the control of agricultural fungi in lands. Its residues with main metabolites in environmental media pose risks to environmental safety and human health. This research summarized the research progress on the environmental residues, human exposure levels, neurotoxic effects and mechanisms of maneb. Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to maneb is associated with an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). In vitro and in vivo experiments have further demonstrated that exposure to man

Reification as a vice: rethinking bioethics beyond moral status.

In this paper, I argue for an expansion of moral concern in bioethics beyond sentience-based and status-based frameworks. Drawing on Lukács' and Honneth's work on reification, I show that even where the sentience, species membership, or moral status of an entity is unknown, there are compelling ethical reasons to be concerned about the creation, manipulation, and use of such entities. I reconceive reification not just as a social pathology but as a moral vice: a disordered, objectifying mode of perception. Understood in this way, reification provides a flexible normative framework that applies

Systemic Candidiasis in Mice: New Insights From an Old Model.

Animal models are essential to understand the pathophysiology of infections, to test novel antifungal compounds, and to determine the potential of adjunctive therapies, e.g. immune modulation. The murine model of systemic candidiasis induced by intravenous infection is technically straightforward, highly reproducible, and well-characterized. However, intravenous inoculation circumvents the necessity for the fungus to translocate across mucosal barriers, and the use of SPF mice that are immunologically naïve to Candida does not reflect the situation in human patients, in whom adaptive immune re

Application of zebrafish in the study of craniomaxillofacial developmental anomalies.

Craniomaxillofacial developmental anomalies are one of the most prevalent congenital defects worldwide and could result from any disruption of normal development processes, which is generally influenced by interactions between genes and the environment. Currently, with the advances in genetic screening strategies, an increasing number of novel variants and their roles in orofacial diseases have been explored. Zebrafish is recognized as a powerful animal model, and its homologous genes and similar oral structure and development process provide an ideal platform for studying the contributions of

Naturally Occurring Terpenes: A Promising Class of Organic Molecules to Address Influenza Pandemics.

Since the olden times, infectious diseases have largely affected human existence. The newly emerged infections are excessively caused by viruses that are largely associated with mammal reservoirs. The casualties of these emergencies are significantly influenced by the way human beings interact with the reservoirs, especially the animal ones. In our review we will consider the evolutionary and the ecological scales of such infections and their consequences on the public health, with a focus on the pathogenic influenza A virus. The nutraceutical properties of fungal and plant terpene-like molecu

Visual interhemispheric communication and callosal connections of the occipital lobes.

Callosal connections of the occipital lobes, coursing in the splenium of the corpus callosum, have long been thought to be crucial for interactions between the cerebral hemispheres in vision in both experimental animals and humans. Yet the callosal connections of the temporal and parietal lobes appear to have more important roles than those of the occipital callosal connections in at least some high-order interhemispheric visual functions. The partial intermixing and overlap of temporal, parietal and occipital callosal connections within the splenium has made it difficult to attribute the effe

Genetics of Hirschsprung disease and anorectal malformations.

Hirschsprung disease (HD) and anorectal malformations (ARMs) result from alterations in hindgut development. It has long been recognized that both recur in families and thus result, at least in part, from genetic factors. Progress in the understanding of the genetic basis of HD has been made by the application of findings from genetic animal models of altered enteric nervous system development to human beings. Several genes have been shown to be important for human enteric nervous system development, and current work is progressing to identify genetic interactions that may explain the variable

Nutritional intervention to prevent hereditary cancer.

To determine if the effect of nutritional interventions differs by genetic susceptibility to cancer, we must have both an effective intervention as well as a documented marker of genetic susceptibility. The first large clinical trials to test nutritional intervention strategies have recently been reported, and apparent efficacy has been observed for selected antioxidants in the primary prevention of several cancers, including esophageal, stomach, prostate, and colorectal cancers. At the same time, increasing numbers of markers of genetic susceptibility are being identified. Although susceptibi

A primary cell-based in vitro model of the human small intestine reveals host olfactomedin 4 induction in response to Salmonella Typhimurium infection.

Infection research largely relies on classical cell culture or mouse models. Despite having delivered invaluable insights into host-pathogen interactions, both have limitations in translating mechanistic principles to human pathologies. Alternatives can be derived from modern Tissue Engineering approaches, allowing the reconstruction of functional tissue models in vitro. Here, we combined a biological extracellular matrix with primary tissue-derived enteroids to establish an in vitro model of the human small intestinal epithelium exhibiting in vivo-like characteristics. Using the foodborne pat

The Nonhuman Primate Model for H. pylori Infection.

Helicobacter pylori establishes chronic infections in the human gastric mucosa that can last for decades, and that are a major cause of gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD) and a risk factor for gastric cancer. The importance of H. pylori as a human pathogen has led to major efforts to understand its interactions with its human host, including the development and use of various animal models. Several heterologous models have been developed, including: 1. Gnotobiotic newborn piglets, which are easily infected by H. pylori of human origin (1,2), but are best for short term studies lasting no

Escherichia coli: An arduous voyage from commensal to Antibiotic-resistance.

Escherichia coli (E. coli), a normal intestinal microbiota is one of the most common pathogen known for infecting urinary tract, wound, lungs, bone marrow, blood system and brain. Irrational and overuse of commercially available antibiotics is the most imperative reason behind the emergence of the life threatening infections caused due to antibiotic resistant pathogens. The World Health Organization (WHO) identified antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the 10 biggest public health threats of our time. This harmless commensal can acquire a range of mobile genetic elements harbouring genes c

Acute and Subchronic Toxicity Studies of Aqueous Extract of Desmodium adscendens (Sw) DC.

Extracts of Desmodium adscendens (Sw) DC are used for the treatment of various diseases but limited toxicological evaluations have been done on the medicinal plant. This study investigates toxicity effects of the leave extract of D adscendens, and the possibility of drug-drug interaction of the plant extract when co-administered with other drugs. Oral administrations of leaf extract of D adscendens to white Wistar rats in an acute toxicity studies allowed the estimation of an LD50 (median lethal dose) value of 1122 mg/kg body weight. In a subchronic toxicity studies, the plant extract caused a

Interactions of cholinesterase inhibitors and corticosteroids with the hypnotic effect of benzodiazepines in mice.

Interactions of cholinesterase inhibitors or dexamethasone with the hypnotic effect of benzodiazepines appear to be strongly dependent on the dose of the cholinesterase inhibitor used and to a lesser extent on the dose of the hypnotic. The duration of the loss of righting reflex caused by the benzodiazepines, diazepam or chlorodiazepoxide, is markedly prolonged by 500 micrograms/kg, significantly antagonized both diazepam and chlorodiazepoxide. Relatively higher doses of physostigmine have no significant effect on either diazepam or chlorodiazepoxide. Dexamethasone, in relatively low doses of

Associations of community knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to zoonotic disease with sociodemographic factors in and around Chiro Town, Eastern Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Zoonoses are infectious diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans. Studying the knowledge, perceptions and practices … and livelihoods in the communities where they occur. These diseases emerge due to a combination of human-animal interactions, migration, and contact with wildlife and their respective parasites and vectors. Hence, recognizing residents' perceptions, knowledge, and practices is crucial for effectively minimizing risks. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from …

LINC01197 inhibits influenza A virus replication by serving as a PABPC1 decoy.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) significantly impact animal and human health due to their zoonotic potential. A growing body of evidence indicates that the host's long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play crucial roles in regulating host-virus interactions during IAV infection. However, numerous lncRNAs associated with IAV infection have not been well characterised. Here, in this study, we identify the LINC01197 as an antiviral host factor. LINC01197 was significantly upregulated after IAV infection, which is controlled by the NF-κB pathway. Functional analysis revealed that overexpression of LINC01197 in

Recurrent processing in V1/V2 contributes to categorization of natural scenes.

Humans are able to categorize complex natural scenes very rapidly and effortlessly, which has led to an assumption that such ultra-rapid categorization is driven by feedforward activation of ventral brain areas. However, recent accounts of visual perception stress the role of recurrent interactions that start rapidly after the activation of V1. To study whether or not recurrent processes play a causal role in categorization, we applied fMRI-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation on early visual cortex (V1/V2) and lateral occipital cortex (LO) while the participants categorized natural images

Kistrin inhibits human smooth muscle cell interaction with fibrin.

Because of the lack of function-blocking anti-integrin antibodies that react with nonprimate species, the study of the role of integrins in in vivo animal models of atherosclerosis has been limited. In contrast, peptides or small molecules have shown less species specificity and thus may be better tools to use. In an attempt to identify integrin antagonists of potential use against smooth muscle response to injury, we investigated the role of human smooth muscle cell interactions with fibrin by using a panel of integrin antagonists consisting of the snake venom disintegrin, Kistrin, as well as

[Interaction between Bordetella pertussis vaccine and chlorpromazine in mice].

In acute toxicity experiments authors observed increased mortality on the first day following 75 mg/kg chlorpromazine (CPZ) treatment in mice pretreated with Bordetella pertussis vaccine (9 x 10(9) killed bacterium/mouse) compared to control animals treated with CPZ alone. Initially, the increased drug sensitivity observed after combined treatment was attributed to summation of the toxic effects. However, the cumulation of mortality did not cease on the following days; furthermore, an increase of bacterial translocation (translocation index of P-CPZ group: 4.5) was observed on days 6 and 7, i.

Interactions between zinc, essential fatty acids and prostaglandins: relevance to acrodermatitis enteropathica, total parenteral nutrition, the glucagonoma syndrome, diabetes, anorexia nervosa and sickle cell anaemia.

Many of the features of zinc deficiency and of essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency are similar in both animals and humans. The two agents interact in various ways. EFAs are important in zinc absorption, probably after conversion to prostaglandins (PGs). Zinc seems necessary for at least two stages in EFA metabolism, the conversion of linoleic acid to gamma-linolenic acid, and the mobilisation of dihomogammalinolenic acid (DGLA) for the synthesis of 1 series PGs. Zinc may also be important in the conversion of DGLA to arachidonic acid and in arachidonic acid mobilisation for 2 series PG forma

A study of the interaction of practolol with acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin and bradykinin in the guinea-pig, and with bean-sprout juice in the mouse.

1. The interactions of practolol with acetylcholine, histamine, serotonin and bradykinin were studied on the trachea and lung of the guinea-pig, an animal whose sensitivity to bronchoactive endogens is known to be similar to that of human asthmatic bronchi. 2. Practolol, like propranolol, potentiated the action of the first three agonists mentioned above, but, unlike propranolol, it did not potentiate the bronchospastic effect of bradykinin. 3. Practolol, in fact, antagonized the action of bradykinin, but this effect was unlike that produced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. 4. The poss
