The 'intrinsic' system in the human cortex and self-projection: a data driven analysis.

Information received by the human cortex is supplied by two main sources: extrinsic stimuli delivered by the external environment and intrinsic information regarding the body and self. We reanalyzed electrophysiological data involving the same external stimuli, but manipulating the degree of 'self-projection' to locations inside and outside the body border. Electrical neuroimaging and spatial principal component analysis (PCA) showed a bipartition of the cerebral cortex into two main subsystems: occipital and frontal activity was similar across tasks; activity in temporo-parietal and anterior

Using prior distributions to synthesize historical evidence: comments on the Goodman-Sladky case study of IVIg in Guillain-Barré syndrome.

One feature of the Bayesian approach is that it provides methods for synthesizing what is known about a question of interest and provides a formalism based on the laws of probability for incorporating this auxiliary knowledge into the planning and the analysis of the next study. In this comment, we use elements of the Goodman-Sladky case study to illustrate (1) the use of Bayesian methods to quantify historical information about an intervention through the specification of a prior distribution, (2) an approach to the analysis of the sensitivity of the conclusions of a Bayesian analysis to the

Relative safety and efficacy of finasteride for treatment of hirsutism.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative safety and efficacy of finasteride for treatment of hirsutism related to hyperandrogenism in women. DATA SOURCES: Literature retrieval was accessed through MEDLINE (1966-March 2003) using the terms finasteride and hirsutism. Additional information was obtained from the drug manufacturer. DATA SYNTHESIS: Finasteride has been evaluated for treatment of hirsutism in multiple observational and randomized trials. Finasteride lowered hirsutism scores by 30-60% in most trials, as well as decreasing average hair diameter. In comparative trials, finasteride demonst

Office emergencies: an outline of causes, symptoms, and treatment.

Conscientious dental practitioners are aware of the increasing chances for medical emergencies to arise in the dental office. New treatment modalities and drugs have increased potential life spans, but have also presented greater responsibilities to the dentist for properly managing these patients. Additionally, widely diversified sources are available to the dentist for acquiring and assembling all necessary information to train his personnel and organize equipment and drugs so he is constantly ready to handle any emergency. We have attempted to give a simple, thorough outline that provides b

[Risk assessment of drugs during breastfeeding].

Medication intake during the postpartum period is common with discontinuation of breastfeeding sometimes unnecessarily recommended for fear of adverse effects in the breastfed infant, while exposure through human milk is generally low. The assessment of risks associated with medication intake during breastfeeding is based, among other things, on the little clinical evidence available in specialized sources of information, and on pharmacokinetic principles. A decision-making support is presented to facilitate communication with mothers, foster medication adherence and prevent unnecessary interr

Hepatic fibrosis and mineralization in a free-ranging barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus) from the Northwest Territories.

Due to concerns about the appearance of portions of liver from a harvested adult, male barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus), samples were submitted for diagnostic investigation. The gross and histologic findings were consistent with severe hepatic fibrosis and mineralization. Concentrations of vitamin E in the liver were also deficient. Disease investigations in wildlife of detectable abnormalities such as this provide important information for understanding the role of disease as populations change, as well as for safety of human food sources.

Understanding the three national databases on collegiate alcohol and drug use.

An overview of the three major databases used to examine alcohol and other drug use habits of American college students is provided. The databases are compared in terms of purpose, study population, subject selection, method of administration, focus, utility for institutional use, and trend analyses. The authors conclude that no one source of data is "best." Rather, the studies represent three different sources of data. Although information from these databases overlaps to some extent, each database makes a unique contribution to the field.

Diagnostic cytology in avian medicine.

Diagnostic cytology in avian medicine provides a means for better disease definition in the avian patient, which allows for a more specific therapeutic regimen. It is important that cytologic specimens are from fresh sources, since cells degenerate rapidly following the death of the bird or the tissue. Cytologic evaluation is an adjunct to other diagnostic procedures. A definitive diagnosis often requires information from the clinical history, physical examination, evaluation of samples obtained from the bird, radiographs, surgical procedures, necropsy, and histopathology.

Assessment of social skills.

Deficiencies in social skills, important in the functional adjustment and rehabilitation of persons with schizophrenia, derive from inadequate learning experiences, disuse, anxiety, cognitive disturbances, and amotivational states. Social skills training programs should be specifically organized to compensate for these varied sources of deficiency in interpersonal competence. Assessment of social skills deficits can proceed along topographical, functional, and information-processing lines. Assessment technology is in its early stages of development and will require attention to the psychometri

The treatment of facial disharmony and malocclusion by jaw surgery. Case reports.

Examples are given of the Australian Cranio-Facial Unit's methods of dealing with facial disharmony and malocclusion by orthognathic surgery. Members of the Unit specialize in different aspects of craniofacial structure and function, and their teamwork is described. Treatment planning and assessment are illustrated by traditional cephalometric and other analytical procedures, and by pattern profile analysis. An appraisal is made of the Unit's increasing use of computer technology to facilitate these analyses, and to integrate various sources of information about facial disharmony.

Biologically active compounds from plants with reputed medicinal and sweetening properties.

Examples are presented of plants with folkloric reputations that have recently afforded constituents with great potential for use as drugs or pharmaceutical excipients. Described are the results of laboratory investigations at this institution on the biologically active compounds of four plants with reputed medicinal properties and of six sweet plants used by local populations in various regions of the world. It is concluded that folklore information should be considered seriously in programs designed to yield prototype, biologically active molecules from plant sources.

Developmental temporal bone anatomy and its clinical significance: variations on themes by H. F. Schuknecht.

Fifty-eight fetal and neonatal temporal bones were studied to evaluate the mechanisms of development of the hiatus of the facial canal, hypotympanic fissures, periotic duct, tympanomeningeal fissures, and fetal inner ear vascularity. These were correlated with the clinical pathologic entities of temporal bone trauma, glomus jugulare tumor extension within the temporal bone, CNS-temporal septic conduits, and inner ear vascularity. Temporal bone developmental anatomy and histopathology provide rich sources of information on which to base the scientific and clinical study of otology.

Facebook as a Lifeboat: An Interview Study Exploring the Role of Facebook in Supporting Parents of Children with Rare Diseases.

Parents of children with rare diseases face unique challenges due to scarce medical expertise and limited information sources. Social media, particularly Facebook, have become a vital (and sometimes the only) space for parents to access information, share experiences, and find emotional support. This study examined how parents of children with an ultra-rare genetic condition [FOXP1] engage with a Facebook group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 parents across eight countries and analyzed using thematic analysis. Based on the results, we developed the "Phased Social Media Engag…
