The purpose of this study was to determine the cellular events occurring 6 h after bronchial inhalation challenge, in a group of pigeon breeders. Twelve subjects agreed to undergo challenge, either with nebulized pigeon serum (Ps) (n = 10), or with saline (n = 2). The time-course of damage and repair in the bronchial epithelium of the mouse was studied morphometrically after a single inhalation of trichloroethylene (TCE). Mice were exposed for 30 min to 500, 1000, 2000, 3500, or 7000 ppm of TCE under controlled conditions and sacrificed after 2 and 24 h, and 2, 5, and 7 days. The toxicity and carcinogenicity of methyl bromide (MeBr) were studied in male and female Wistar rats exposed by inhalation to 0, 3, 30 or 90 ppm MeBr 6hr/day, 5 days/wk for 29 months. An elderly woman developed lipoid pneumonia due to the inhalation of mist from a spray lubricant that she was using as a liniment for sore back and neck muscles. This unusual practice is reported to be common among older people bothered by rheumatism. The potential for this complication to occur in other patients leads us to present this case report.

We report a case of baby powder inhalation (BPI), causing adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in a 16-month-old girl, with follow-up after six years. Pulmonary function studies in the child and her monozygotic twin, used as a control, were normal. Animals exposed to an aerosol of BeSO4 showed a significant reduction in mortality with iron treatment. Rats were exposed for 2 h in a nose-only inhalation chamber for 14 days to an aerosol of 2.59 micrograms/Be/l. The cumulative mortality of animals concurrently treated with iron salt was significantly reduced (P less than 0.05) compared to animals which had not received iron treatment.

Male and female Fischer 344 (F-344) rats were exposed at 0,25 or 250 ppm diethylamine (DEA) vapor, 6.5 hr per day, 5 days per week, for 24 weeks in order to assess cardiac and other organ system toxicity. Scheduled sacrifices were performed following 30, 60, and 120 days of exposure. During the first 2 weeks of exposure, the rats exposed at 250 ppm DEA did not gain weight. There is controversy on whether both primary and secondary pipe smokers do inhale tobacco smoke. We studied inhalation of tobacco smoke in 6 primary and 6 secondary pipe smokers and compared it with that in 20 cigarette smokers and 11 never smokers. A rapid air titration method for determining SO2 concentration in inhalation chambers has been validated using the pararosaniline-formaldehyde (PRA) method of West and Gaeke. This air-titration (iodate) method is an adaptation of iodometric methods using a starch indicator. Potassium iodate and an excess of potassium iodide are used in the reaction.
