I-131 Use in Patients With Kidney Failure Receiving Dialsyis: Therapeutic Challenges and Evidence From Literature.

Radioactive iodine (131I) therapy is widely used in the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancer and hyperthyroidism. However, its use in patients with kidney failure treated with hemodialysis presents unique challenges due to impaired renal clearance, prolonged systemic retention, and logistical barriers to safe delivery. In this multicenter retrospective case series, we identified 5 patients with kidney failure on maintenance hemodialysis who received 131I therapy. We discuss in this paper our experience, modified dosing, and carefully timed dialysis that were used to optimize safety and e

The Language of Compassion: Inclusive Communication in Palliative Nursing.

Communication is fundamental in palliative care, yet the language used by health care providers may unintentionally perpetuate stigma, bias, or misunderstanding during emotionally challenging conversations. Inclusive language, defined as communication that is respectful, person-centered, and culturally responsive, fosters trust, supports shared decision-making, and promotes equitable care for patients and families facing serious illness. This article examines the role of inclusive language in palliative care through the lens of Carper's pattern of personal knowing and explores common communica

Ocular Clues in Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Narrative Review for Orthopaedic Specialists.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are primarily characterized by joint, bone, and connective tissue involvement, but they can also present with ocular manifestations that carry diagnostic and clinical significance. These findings such as uveitis, blue sclera, lens subluxation, and scleritis may serve as early markers of systemic disease or indicate ongoing inflammation that affects orthopaedic decision making. Despite their relevance, ocular symptoms are frequently underrecognized in orthopaedic settings, potentially delaying comprehensive care. This narrative review aims to explore the spectru

Epidemic imaginaries in literature and film: a comparative study of narrative responses to plague and pandemic.

Epidemics have historically been both biomedical disasters and cultural stories that societies interpret and recount. This study explores the epidemic imaginary, examining how literature and cinema symbolically depict contagion by analysing narratives of contagion produced during the Plague era in literature and modern pandemic representations in film. The research considers some plague-era literature, such as Albert Camus' The Plague (1947) and Thomas Mann's Death in Venice (1912), alongside more recent pandemic literature like Dean Koontz's The Eyes of Darkness (1981), as well as two films:

Retinal biomarkers in cognitive impairment and dementia: Structural, functional, and molecular insights.

Cognitive impairment and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), pose a global health crisis, necessitating non-invasive biomarkers for early detection. This review highlights the retina, an accessible extension of the central nervous system (CNS), as a window to cerebral pathology through structural, functional, and molecular alterations. By synthesizing interdisciplinary evidence, we identify retinal biomarkers as promising tools for early diagnosis and risk stratification. Nevertheless, translating biomarkers into clinical practice faces significant translational hurdles, including me

Novel Diffuse Midline Glioma-on-Chip Recapitulating Tumor Biophysical Microenvironment to Assess the Heterogeneity of Response to Therapies.

Despite significant efforts, Diffuse Midline Gliomas (DMGs) remain incurable. Although promising results are obtained in preclinical studies, most approaches have failed to improve survival in these young patients. In this context, by integrating elements of the biophysical tumor microenvironment known to regulate the response to therapies, a new preclinical tool is developed to better evaluate the efficacy of antitumoral strategies. For this purpose, a novel DMG-on-Chip (DoC) is engineered composed of a 3D dense tumor disk embedded in an extracellular matrix, which is accessible for real-time

Geopolitics and mine waste: An overview and future research directions.

This paper examines a critical yet underexplored perspective on resource geopolitics by focusing on mine waste-one of the world's largest waste streams by volume. Traditional studies of resource geopolitics emphasise the governance of raw materials production, trade and supply chains. Our approach positions mine waste as a factor shaping twenty-first century geopolitics and global power dynamics. To demonstrate the analytical value of making this connection, we explore two domains: geopolitical strategies and alliances; and sovereignty and justice. We illustrate how mine waste both reflects an

Fatty acid synthase in chemoresistance: mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities.

Chemoresistance has been a major obstacle to the efficient treatment of cancer. Recently, targeting lipid metabolism has gained significant attention because of its roles not only in promoting cancer progression but also in inducing chemotherapy resistance. Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is the sole enzyme that is in charge of catalyzing the synthesis of palmitate, a long-chain lipid that is essential for membrane construction and post-translational modification in cell biology. Both FAS and its product, palmitate, have been validated as critical players in mediating or causing chemoresistance in c

Advancements in two-dimensional nanomaterials for regenerative medicine in skeletal muscle repair.

Skeletal muscle, the largest organ in the human body, plays vital roles in movement, heat generation, and internal organ protection. While healthy muscle can regenerate effectively, its regenerative capacity declines in conditions like congenital muscular dystrophy, severe trauma, or aging. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, with unique physicochemical properties such as high surface area, excellent biocompatibility, and tunable mechanical and electrical properties, have shown great promise in different forms of muscle injury, particularly in volumetric muscle loss (VML). Recent studies highl

Understanding the Psychological Profile of Children and Youth Engaging in Sexual Contact with non-Human Animals: A Scoping Review.

It is developmentally normal for children to display some sexual behaviors but concerning sexual behaviors (CSBs) that deviate from societal norms are potentially harmful. The development of CSBs is influenced by various factors, including family dynamics, parental stressors, and disruptions in psychosexual development. Historically, sexual abuse was seen as the primary cause of CSBs, but current research suggests that nonsexual abuse and family environment also play significant roles. This scoping review synthesized literature on the psychological characteristics of children and youth who eng

Complex pathways in plant-human relationships in changing environments: pollen, seeds, wood, molecules and weeds in the Early-Mid Holocene Sahara.

This contribution is a survey of the research on the long-lasting relationship between plants and humans in the Holocene 'green' Sahara. Based on archaeobotanical data, including pollen and other plant remains, we present the complex dynamics of environmental instability and cultural trajectories, which had joint effects on plant communities and human behaviour in this area. The review illustrates the scientific methodological approach to archaeo-environmental reconstruction through case studies of ethnobotany and archaeobotany, showing the adaptation strategies of plants and humans living in

Emerging biomedical engineering strategies for hair follicle regeneration.

Hair follicle undergoes cyclical regeneration that relies on the spatiotemporal coordination of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and multiple signaling pathways. However, hair follicle homeostasis is susceptible to disruption by various endogenous and exogenous factors, leading to hair loss diseases like androgenetic alopecia and scarring alopecia. Traditional pharmacological treatments and surgical transplantation still face challenges in meeting clinical demands because of unstable therapeutic efficacy, limited donor resources, and postoperative complications. In this condition, biomedica
