The purpose of this paper is to elucidate methodological problems in the study of fears and to make suggestions that will facilitate future research. The most basic problem begins with a definition of "fear". Other considerations include methods of assessment, classification, and the instruments used.

This article explores the health implications of partner violence against women in Ghana using data from northern Ghana. The mutilant nature of the mucosal form of leishmaniasis can cause alterations in personal relations. To identify the level of understanding of leishmaniasis and the psychological reaction to it patients and houseowners in an endemic area of Bahia were interviewed. Several false beliefs were identified and there was a strong tendency to reject mutilated patients among the population for a false fear of contagion. Possibly future clarification of the real nature of leishmaniasis could change such a negative attitude among the resident population.

The authors suggest that many patients diagnosed as having manic-depressive illness, depressed type, may in fact be experiencing anniversary reactions--time-specific psychological and physiological reactions to a past trauma. They report three cases of cyclic depressive disorder, two of which were first diagnosed as manic-depressive illness, depressed type. The origin and type of stress among seamen were investigated by means of interviews with three harbor physicians in Rotterdam. The main psychological problems encountered were loneliness, homesickness, and "burn-out" syndrome. The problems were primarily caused by long periods away from home, the decreased number of seamen per ship, and by increased automatization. Quantification of the prevalence and severity of these problems is necessary to elucidate preventive and therapeutic measures.

The investigation involved 30 hysterical women, who were interviewed and who completed four questionnaires relating to: psychosexual development; attitude towards sexuality; sexual activity; and reactivity. Dysharmonic sexual development, and low levels of activity and reactivity in their sexual life was revealed.
