Conversion of androgens (aromatization) to estrogens in lymphocytes of cancer patients and healthy subjects in vitro was discovered. Aromatase activity in lymphocytes was comparable to that of fat and breast tumor tissues. It was completely suppressed in one out of two breast cancer patients receiving orimeten (aminoglutethimide). The activity in large bowel cancer was lower than in adenoma patients; however, the two groups were not balanced for age.

It is important clinically to be able to differentiate ulcerative colitis from Crohn's colitis because they differ considerably in the nature of complications and prognoses. Radiographically, it is possible to render a specific diagnosis in the vast majority of cases using criteria described in this article. The problem of the underlying process in inflammatory bowel disease in elderly patients and indeterminate colitis is also discussed.

A personal series of 83 cases of carcinoma of transverse colon has been analysed, as the recent works of international literature. The causes of melena or hematochezia in 48 pediatric patients were examined. Malrotation with volvulus was an important cause of hemorrhage during the newborn period, and intussusception was very typical in patients aged from 1 month to 1 year. Polyps of the rectum and colon were the most common causes of melena or hematochezia in patients older than 1 year. No cause of melena or hematochezia could be identified in 11 children. Post-polypectomy syndrome (PPS) is a rare yet significant complication of endoscopic polypectomy that can clinically mimic intestinal perforation. This report presents the case of an 85-year-old female who developed PPS following an elective endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of a 3 cm mid-rectal polyp.
