Gastrointestinal permeability was assessed by means of absorption of 51Cr-labelled EDTA in 24 patients with schizophrenia (12 in relapse and 12 in remission). The results were compared with those for patients with coeliac disease and those for normal controls. Significant differences between the schizophrenic patients and the normal controls were not established. The results of the use of emergency laparoscopy in 78 patients are presented. Of 25 patients with clinical signs of acute ileus (AI), the diagnosis was confirmed in 12, of 42 with suspected AI--in 14. In 11 cases, AI was a laparoscopic finding. In 18% of the cases, no changes in the internal organs were revealed at investigation, in 30.8%--the other diseases of the abdominal organs were diagnosed. In 6 patients, AI was dynamic, in 8--strangulative, in 23--obstructive. Laparoscopic investigation performed in 94.9% of cases permitted to establish the accurate diagnosis.

The authors report a recent case of primary ulceration of the small intestine revealed by spontaneous perforation. This is a rare condition with a non specific semiology which only exceptionally permits diagnosis before complications occur. The latter are dominated by perforation, gastrointestinal hemorrhage and a sub-acute obstructive syndrome. We made a retrospective analysis of 43 cases of primary tumor of the small intestine, 28 benign and 15 malignant, diagnosed and treated in our hospital over a period of 18 years. A preoperative diagnosis was reached in 13 cases (30%), while in 37.2% the tumor was a casual finding during operation by other methods. Six cases of severed intestines in farm-raised channel catfish were examined at fish disease diagnostic laboratories in Mississippi and Alabama. Malrotation of the gut is a congenital abnormality in which the primitive intestinal loop fails to undergo rotation to its normal adult position. Rotation of the gut may become arrested at any stage, producing abnormal locations of the intestines within the abdomen. Malrotation may cause intestinal obstruction or volvulus or may remain asymptomatic. The case presented here illustrates asymptomatic malrotation of the gut, first detected by cholescintigraphy.

Severe small-intestinal cryptosporidiosis was diagnosed in a chicken that had diarrhea, was weak, and had failed to thrive. Intestine segments also were parasitized by Eimeria sp. and bacteria. Disseminated foci of malignant lymphocytes were present in several organs. Spontaneously occurring intestinal cryptosporidiosis has not been reported in chickens.
