[Determination of the impaired ear's frequency selectivity using psychoacoustical tuning curves (author's transl)].

An apparatus for clinical use is described by which simplified psychoacoustical tuning curves can be measured near 500 Hz and near 4 kHz. Data produced by four groups (normal hearing, conductive hearing loss, noise induced hearing loss and degenerative hearing loss) are separately averaged and compared. The first mentioned two groups as well as the third in the low frequency range show good frequency resolution, the others, however, show largely decreased frequency resolution.

Sudden deafness: histopathologic correlation in temporal bone.

The histopathological study of two cases of sudden deafness is presented. The temporal bones showed cochleosaccular abnormality. The most striking pathological changes were collapse of the organ of Corti, atrophy of the tectorial membrane, atrophy of the stria vascularis, decrease in the number of the cochlear nerves, collapse of the saccular membrane and partial absence of the sensory epithelial layer in the saccular macula. These changes are quite similar in type to those occurring in labyrinthitis of known viral etiology and to those in previously reported cases of sudden deafness which wer

Inner ear pathologic features following mumps infection. Report of a case in an adult.

Temporal bone studies in an adult with a moderately severe, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss revealed bilateral cochlear changes 13 years after mumps infection. The organ of Corti was completely absent in the greater part of the superior horizontal basal limbs, with occasional hair cell loss throughout the rest of the cochlea. The outer sulcus cell area was degenerated. The stria vascularis was normal, as was the tectorial membrane, except for small hyaline droplets. The number of nerve fibers was extremely decreased in the spiral bony lamina of the basal turns. Basophilic material, possib

Assessment of changes in cochlear function with pneumolabyrinth after middle ear trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of pneumolabyrinth secondary to tympanic membrane/ossicular trauma and the subsequent recovery of sensorineural hearing loss managed with conservative measures. PATIENTS: A 15-year-old boy presented to an outside hospital with signs and symptoms of acute hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus after penetrating injury to his right tympanic membrane. In addition, computed tomography demonstrated air density within the vestibule. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was managed conservatively with bed rest, avoidance of straining, corticosteroids, and antibiotics. MAIN OUTCOME

Inner ear damage induced by Mycobacterium fortuitum.

We used electron microscopy to investigate Mycobacterium fortuitum-induced changes in the inner ears of mice. We found that the inner and outer hair cells had degenerated and disappeared in the organ of Corti. Changes in the lower turn of the cochlea were more severe than those of the upper turn while the changes of the outer hair cells were more severe than those of the inner hair cells. Disappearance, fusion and ballooning of the sensory hairs were observed in the vestibular organs. The bacterial extract also induced inner ear damage which was similar to that caused by live M. fortuitum.

[Experimental viral labyrinthitis--an immunohistochemical investigation of the cochlear lesion].

Pathogenesis of viral labyrinthitis is still poorly understood despite the dimension of clinical problem. This study was undertaken in order to elucidate the pathogenesis of viral labyrinthitis by the immunohistochemical investigations of infected cochleas. HVJ (Sendai virus) and mumps virus have been used to create an animal model of viral labyrinthitis. The cochleas of adult guinea pigs with intralabyrinthine inoculation of virus through the round window membrane and with intravascular injection of virus were investigated by histopathological and immunohistochemical techniques (immunofluores

Transforming superior canal dehiscence to chronic subjective dizziness: from SCD to CSD.

Patients presenting with chronic dizziness and no identifiable vestibular impairments have been described as having "extravestibular" symptoms, or "psychogenic dizziness." In 2005, Staab and Ruckenstein described a syndrome they referred to as "chronic subjective dizziness" (CSD), which characterized this concept more clearly. According to Staab and Ruckenstein (2003), the primary physical symptoms of CSD are continual nonvertiginous dizziness or subjective imbalance that persists for 3 mo or longer. Patients suffering from CSD often describe their dizziness as a rocking or swaying when sittin

Immunobiology of the inner ear.

Immunologic mechanisms may play an etiologic role in ear disease, and many disorders long considered idiopathic are now being examined for such an immunologic basis. While it is possible that many of these idiopathic diseases will ultimately prove not to be immunologically mediated, the outcome of these research endeavors will certainly clarify some of the basic mechanisms of host immunity involved in ear disease. The immunobiology of diseases that affect the inner ear is discussed from both experimental and clinical viewpoints.
