A treatable language disorder: pharmacological treatment of pervasive developmental disorder.

Results of treatment of four patients are described. All of the patients had pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), a tic disorder, and a characteristic pattern of speech and language impairment. The patients were treated with haloperidol for their tic disorders, and concomitant with the reduction of the frequency and severity of tics was marked improvement in language. The patients averaged 3 months of language gain for each week of speech therapy directly after the initiation of haloperidol treatment for tics. Progress in speech and language therapy was extremely slow during the years prior…

Perceived political bias in large language models reduces persuasive abilities.

Conversational AI has been proposed as a scalable way to correct public misconceptions, yet its effectiveness may depend on perceptions of political neutrality. As large language models become objects of partisan conflict, political elites increasingly portray them as ideologically aligned. We test whether such credibility attacks reduce persuasion by conversational AI. In a preregistered US survey experiment (N = 2,144), participants completed a three-round conversation with ChatGPT (GPT-4.1) about an economic policy misconception they personally held. The conversation corrected misconception…

Language assisted learnable hyperdimensional computing framework for retinal disease classification.

Retinal diseases are considered the leading cause of blindness worldwide. Many researchers have developed autonomous retinal screening methods using optical coherence tomography (OCT), as they can reveal retinal abnormalities in the early stages. However, most of these methods lack the capability of performing retinal disease classification tasks by analyzing the disease-specific clinical manifestations, and they screen the retina by relying on mathematical features, which might not be meaningful for clinicians. To overcome these issues, we present a novel language-assisted learnable hyperdime…

CA-VLN: Collaborative Agents in MLLM-Powered Visual-Language Navigation.

Generalization to unseen environments remains a fundamental challenge in Vision-Language Navigation. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel framework that leverages world knowledge embedded within Multimodal Large Language Models. We introduce Collaborative Agents in Visual-Language Navigation (CA-VLN), a framework based on a dual-agent architecture. This architecture comprises a Knowledge Agent, which infuses the action prediction process with semantic context and commonsense reasoning, and a Hierarchical History Agent, which constructs a detailed episodic memory to enable long-horizon plan…

Natural Language Processing Applied to Psychiatric Clinical Notes: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric clinical notes in electronic health records (EHRs) provide rich longitudinal information that can support clinical decision-making. Using historical medical data can enable earlier identification of mental illness, better characterization of disease trajectories, and more personalized treatment planning. Natural language processing (NLP) transforms these unstructured notes into analyzable representations for research and care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to systematically summarize NLP methodologies for psychiatric clinical notes, compare major modeling paradigms and ap…

VL-HTR: Learning Human-Target Representation From Vision-Language Model.

Human-gaze-target prediction aims to predict the target point or object that humans are looking at in images. However, existing methods predominantly rely on vision-only features, which often struggle to capture the semantic context of small or occluded objects and lack explicit priors for precise head direction regression, leading to slow convergence and suboptimal performance. Therefore, we introduce VL-HTR, a novel vision-language learning method for human-target representation, which integrates multimodal knowledge from vision-language models (VLMs) to construct robust human-target relatio…

Prenatal learning relevant to early language development: A systematic review.

Newborns exhibit a wide array of perceptual abilities crucial for their language development, some of which may be learned prenatally. This systematic review aims to summarize the evidence regarding perceptual and neural abilities relevant to early language development that may be shaped by prenatal exposure to speech and other structured auditory input in typically developing populations. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method, 25 articles were included in the current study. The results suggest that prenatal exposure to speech shapes sever…

PEPE: scalable extraction of multi-modal protein language model representations.

SUMMARY: Protein language models (PLMs) capture intricate amino-acid dependencies, producing embeddings that encode rich structural, functional, and evolutionary information. Despite their potential, current extraction workflows rely on arbitrary choices, with respect to embedding layer, pooling, and padding, that frequently yield suboptimal representations for feature extraction and downstream analyses. Large-scale embedding generation is further limited by inefficiencies in computation and memory: (i) accumulating all model outputs in memory before writing to disk causes severe bottlenecks, …

Evaluating Large Language Model Accuracy in Predicting Peruvian Meal Nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence applications have been developed to predict the nutrient content of meals. However, none have been evaluated in the context of Peruvian cuisine, characterized by diverse ingredients and recipes. OBJECTIVES: We assessed whether large language models (LLMs) could predict the nutritional content of Peruvian meals. METHODS: Using a dataset of 510 unique lunch images extracted from a Peruvian cookbook, we compared nutrient values from recipe data against predictions generated by LLMs (Gemma-3: 4B, 12B, and 27B). The LLMs were given the meal name and a photograp…

Comparative assessment of large language models for microbial phenotype assignment.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to extract knowledge from text, yet their coverage and reliability in biology remain unclear. Microbial phenotypes are especially important to assess, as comprehensive data remain sparse except for well-studied organisms and they underpin our understanding of microbial characteristics, functional roles, and applications. RESULTS: Here, we systematically assessed the biological knowledge encoded in publicly available LLMs for structured phenotype assignment of microbial species. We evaluated the performance of up to 57 LLMs across …

Large language models with image processing in automated Cobb angle.

BACKGROUND: The degree of scoliosis is assessed through the Cobb angle, which quantifies severity and is measured by clinicians on radiographs. With the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical workflows, there is uncertainty as to whether large language models (LLMs) with image processing capabilities can streamline and improve spinal deformity classification. This study aims to assess the diagnostic capabilities of 4 leading LLMs: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok in calculating Cobb angles from radiographs. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 122 scoliosis pati…
