Magnesium in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and sudden death.

Magnesium ions are important for maintaining the functional and structural integrity of the myocardium. Epidemiologic studies suggest that myocardial hypomagnecytia can predispose to sudden cardiac death and that hard water protective factor preventing heart attack could be magnesium. Recent studies show that infarcted portion of the myocardium has lowered magnesium content as compared to noninfarcted segment. Magnesium deficiency sensitises the myocardium to the toxic effect of various drugs, hypoxia etc. and magnesium administration is protective. The metabolic, biochemical and electrophysio…

[Calcium and magnesium deficiency and C3 fraction of complement].

The third (C3) and fourth (C4) components of complement and C3 proactivator (C3PA) were determined in 55 children with low serum levels of calcium and magnesium and 30 normal children. The concentrations of serum C3, C4 and C3PA were significantly reduced in children with double deficiences of calcium and magnesium. There were significant correlations between calcium and C3 and magnesium and C3PA. The relations between calcium, magnesium and the classical or alternate pathway of complement systems are discussed.

Variations in the response of sheep to experimental magnesium deficiency.

Hypomagnesaemia was induced in adult sheep by changing their diet from chaff given orally to a milk diet, low in Mg, infused via the abomasum. All sheep given the milk diet developed hypomagnesaemia and four out of 19 developed nervous convulsions similar to the natural disease grass tetany. Analysis of the sequential changes in plasma Ca, P and Mg revealed a striking positive correlation between Ca and Mg and hypocalcaemia thus appeared to be a general response to Mg deficiency. Many sheep appeared to adapt to the deficiency since after a period of about 11 days the decline in plasma Mg (and

Magnesium (and trace substance) deficiencies in the pathogenesis of cancer.

Except for a few experimental models of magnesium (Mg)-deficiency-induced neoplasms, less attention has been paid in the past quarter century in the Western world to this macromineral than to the trace elements; e.g., selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn), and to vitamins, deficiencies of which are each considered probable factors in oncogenesis. Although early epidemiologic studies showed an inverse correlation between the amount of Mg in soil and water and the incidence of (gastric) cancer, and several animal studies supported the premise that Mg has a prophylactic effect against induction of cancer, …

Effects of magnesium sulfate on toxemic patients in labor.

One hundred forty-four toxemic patients were studied by continuous electronic maternal and fetal monitoring. Ninety-seven were treated by intravenous bolus of 2 g MgSO4 every 1-2 hours, and 47 by intravenous drip MgSO4 at a rate of 1 g/hour. Clinical doses of MgSO4 do not affect maternal ECG, temperature, uterine contractions, or fetal heart rate. Intravenous bolus administration is frequently associated with slowing of maternal respirations and hypotension and occasionally with transient apnea.

The site of magnesium absorption from the ruminant stomach.

1. A low-magnesium diet was fed to four sheep, each of which had been surgically prepared with a rumen fistula, a tube into the cranial one-third of the omasum, a tube to the cranial one-third of the abomasum and a re-entrant duodenal cannula. Mg, as gluconate or acate or acetate, was continuously infused for 12-14 d in turn into (1) the caudal duodenal cannula, (2) the abomasum, (3) the omasum, (4) the rumen. A continuous infusion of the chromium-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid complex (CrEDTA) was maintained to the rumen. The abomasal effluent which flowed through the cranial duodenal cannul…

Depressed immune response in the magnesium-deficient rat.

The effects of dietary magnesium on growth, food efficiency, organ development, splenic nucleic acids, and serum antibody were studied in two experiments with male Wistar rats. Diets containing 30% protein from casein were fed ad libitum. Rats were immunized intravenously with sheep red blood cells. Blood was obtained 5 and 9 days after immunization. In experiment 1, a group of weanling rats was fed 10 ppm Mg for 8 days, followed by 142 ppm for 37 days. Group 2 (controls) was fed 480 ppm Mg for 45 days. Group 1 weighed less but had larger spleens, kidneys, and testes relative to body size than…

Role of cofactors in the treatment of malnutrition as examplified by magnesium.

In the absence of appropriate amounts of metabolically important cofactors such as magnesium, replenishment of malnourished patients with protein and carbohydrate will exaggerate the underlying abnormality even though the primary deficiency is corrected. The malnourished patients cannot utilize the food substances provided unless they have within their cells commensurate amounts of all the necessary cofactors required for the metabolism of the food supplied. This therapeutic problem in malnutrition is illustrated by three different examples of clinical deterioration when caloric and vitamin re…
