Abnormal imitation-related cortical activation sequences in Asperger's syndrome.

Subjects with Asperger's syndrome (AS) are impaired in social interaction and imitation, but the underlying brain mechanisms are poorly understood. Because the mirror-neuron system (MNS) that matches observed and executed actions has been suggested to play an important role in imitation and in reading of other people's intentions, we assessed MNS functions in 8 adult AS subjects and in 10 healthy control subjects during imitation of still pictures of lip forms. In the control subjects, cortical activation progressed in 30 to 80-millisecond steps from the occipital cortex to the superior tempor

Temporal dynamics of cortical representation for action.

Brain-imaging studies have shown that the human Broca's region and precentral motor cortex are activated both during execution of hand actions and during observation of similar actions performed by other individuals. We aimed to clarify the temporal dynamics of this cortical activation by neuromagnetic recordings during execution, on-line imitation, and observation of right-hand reaching movements that ended with a precision pinch of the tip of a manipulandum. During execution, the left inferior frontal cortex [Brodmann's area (BA) 44] was activated first (peak approximately 250 ms before the

Cerebral mechanisms involved in word reading in dyslexic children: a magnetic source imaging approach.

The purpose of the present investigation was to describe spatiotemporal brain activation profiles during word reading using magnetic source imaging (MSI). Ten right-handed dyslexic children with severe phonological decoding problems and eight age-matched non-impaired readers were tested in two recognition tasks, one involving spoken and the other printed words. Dyslexic children's activation profiles during the printed word recognition task consistently featured activation of the left basal temporal cortices followed by activation of the right temporoparietal areas (including the angular gyrus

Alteration of the somatosensory cortical map in peripheral mononeuropathy due to carpal tunnel syndrome.

Substantial plasticity of the mature mammalian somatosensory cortex was demonstrated after deprivation of sensory input produced by amputation or somatosensory deafferentation. Following transection of the median nerve, adult owl and squirrel monkeys exhibit extensive reorganization in the cortical representation of the hand in areas 3b and 1. In the present study we investigated the possible effect of incomplete median nerve damage on sensory cortex somatotopy in a patient with unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. We assessed interhemispheric differences of the hand representation in SI by mean

Rediscovery of a seventh sense: humans produce, perceive, and process ultrasound.

INTRODUCTION: We present novel evidence that humans are capable of producing, perceiving, and cortically processing ultrasound (US), extending the recognized limits of human auditory function. This previously unacknowledged sensory ability was identified in an expert practitioner of the traditional Chinese health exercise "The Six Healing Sounds. METHODS AND RESULTS: High-resolution recordings demonstrated deliberate vocal emissions reaching up to 35 kHz, with nearly one third of the acoustic energy residing in the ultrasonic range. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) revealed a distinct cortical re…

Functionally distinct alpha components are differentially modulated by attention and affect behavior.

Alpha oscillations (~10 Hz) have been hypothesized to gate information flow in the brain by inhibiting task-irrelevant and disinhibiting task-relevant processing. Recent work using independent component analysis (ICA) showed that functionally distinct alpha components co-exist during a working-memory task. Here, we recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) while participants performed a visual delayed match-to-sample task with pre- and retro-cueing to investigate the gating role of alpha and the impact of top-down attention on these dynamics. Consistent with prior findings, we observed that alpha …

Sub-second transient activated patterns to sad expressions in major depressive disorders discovered via hidden Markov model.

The pathological mechanisms of major depressive disorders (MDDs) is associated with the overexpression of negative emotions, and the fast transient-activated patterns underlying overrepresentation in depression still remain to be revealed to date. We hypothesized that the aberrant spatiotemporal attributes of the process of sad expressions are related to the neuropathology of MDD and help to detect the depression severity. We enrolled a total of 96 subjects including 47 patients with MDD and 49 healthy controls (HCs), and recorded their magnetoencephalography data under a sad expression recogn…

Abnormal alpha band power in the dynamic pain connectome is a marker of chronic pain with a neuropathic component.

We previously identified alpha frequency slowing and beta attenuation in the dynamic pain connectome related to pain severity and interference in patients with multiple sclerosis-related neuropathic pain (NP). Here, we determined whether these abnormalities, are markers of aberrant temporal dynamics in non-neuropathic inflammatory pain (non-NP) or when NP is also suspected. We measured resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) spectral density in 45 people (17 females, 28 males) with chronic back pain due to ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and 38 age/sex matched healthy controls. We used painDETE…

Neurophysiological changes in the visuomotor network after practicing a motor task.

Although it is well appreciated that practicing a motor task updates the associated internal model, it is still unknown how the cortical oscillations linked with the motor action change with practice. The present study investigates the short-term changes (e.g., fast motor learning) in the α- and β-event-related desynchronizations (ERD) associated with the production of a motor action. To this end, we used magnetoencephalography to identify changes in the α- and β-ERD in healthy adults after participants practiced a novel isometric ankle plantarflexion target-matching task. After practicing, th…

Cortical somatosensory reorganization in children with spastic cerebral palsy: a multimodal neuroimaging study.

Although cerebral palsy (CP) is among the most common causes of physical disability in early childhood, we know little about the functional and structural changes of this disorder in the developing brain. Here, we investigated with three different neuroimaging modalities [magnetoencephalography (MEG), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and resting-state fMRI] whether spastic CP is associated with functional and anatomical abnormalities in the sensorimotor network. Ten children participated in the study: four with diplegic CP (DCP), three with hemiplegic CP (HCP), and three typically developing (T…

Alpha rhythms in audition: cognitive and clinical perspectives.

Like the visual and the sensorimotor systems, the auditory system exhibits pronounced alpha-like resting oscillatory activity. Due to the relatively small spatial extent of auditory cortical areas, this rhythmic activity is less obvious and frequently masked by non-auditory alpha-generators when recording non-invasively using magnetoencephalography (MEG) or electroencephalography (EEG). Following stimulation with sounds, marked desynchronizations can be observed between 6 and 12 Hz, which can be localized to the auditory cortex. However knowledge about the functional relevance of the auditory …

Magnetic source imaging of cortical dysfunction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to determine whether magnetic source imaging could identify a signature for cortical involvement in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and to determine whether the method might provide insight into functional abnormalities associated with the disease process. DESIGN: Spontaneous brain activity recordings from whole-head 148-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG) were employed to look for localized dipolar sources of focal delta-theta (1-7 Hz) discharges in patients with ALS without dementia. Localized slow wave dipoles were mapped and counted by anatomic …

Physiological and pathological oscillatory networks in the human motor system.

Human brain functions are heavily contingent on neural interactions both at the single neuron and the neural population or system level. Accumulating evidence from neurophysiological studies strongly suggests that coupling of oscillatory neural activity provides an important mechanism to establish neural interactions. With the availability of whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) macroscopic oscillatory activity can be measured non-invasively from the human brain with high temporal and spatial resolution. To localise, quantify and map oscillatory activity and interactions onto individual bra…
