OBJECTIVE: To describe and model the normal growth of fetal facial bones and angles.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 118 fetal CT scans obtained at 19 to 41 weeks gestation after in utero fetal death or late miscarriage were analyzed. CT scan was followed by autopsy and pathological examination and only fetuses free from brain disease or abnormal craniofacial development were included. The measurements were taken using software for frontal, sagittal and 3D reconstruction from native axial sections. The optimal plane for bone analysis was chosen and the measurements made by multiplanar recons

With the application of three-dimensional (3D) radiographic imaging in orthodontic practice, jawbone morphology features that were previously undetectable on two-dimensional (2D) images now have the opportunity to be more thoroughly understood. This study aimed to three-dimensionally assess the mandibular functional skeletal subunits in different skeletal sagittal and vertical patterns. A total of 281 Chinese adult patients were retrospectively enrolled. Using the 3D reconstructed images from the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, the mandibular functional skeletal subunits were evalu

INTRODUCTION: The combined lesions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and skull base pose a considerable clinical challenge, frequently necessitating complex reconstructive procedures, yet established treatment protocols remain insufficient. This case series aims to assess the middle-term clinical safety, accuracy, and efficacy of our own customised temporomandibular joint-skull base combined prosthesis by 3D printing.
METHODS: This is a prospective single-centre consecutive case series study and planned to enrol 12 patients. Patients with TMJ-skull base combined lesions who visited the Dep

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) involves complex skeletal asymmetries, including mandibular and zygomatic arch deficiencies, leading to facial deformities and occlusal cant. Current animal models inadequately replicate these features, hindering the development of customized temporomandibular joint prostheses for CFM. This study aimed to develop a miniature pig model that mimics the proportional craniofacial skeletal defects observed in severe CFM, serving as a platform for future TMJ reconstruction studies. Three miniature pigs underwent preoperative CT imaging and digital surgical planning. Pro

BACKGROUND: The mandibular infected buccal cyst is an uncommon lesion associated with the permanent mandibular first or second molar in children just prior to tooth eruption. The World Health Organization includes this lesion under the category of paradental cyst and suggests the term "mandibular infected buccal cyst" (MIBC) for lesions that occur on the buccal surface of the permanent mandibular first molar in children approximately 6 to 8 years of age. We present the case of a patient with bilateral mandibular cyst affecting the second molars of an 8-year-old boy. To the best of our knowledg

OBJECTIVE: Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are often called upon to manage complex mandible injuries, which can be associated with significant tissue loss. External fixation (EF) of comminuted, contaminated, compound, and infected fractures can preserve tissue, maintain anatomic integrity, and provide an effective stage in comprehensive reconstruction. The purpose of this report is to review the EF surgical technique and share our outcomes and experience of using EF over 6 years in 23 patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients treated with mandibular EF were identified through a retrospective chart rev

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Marginal mandibular nerve palsy (MMNP) is often an understated complication after neck dissection. This article reviews literature regarding anatomic landmarks that help define marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) during neck dissection, oncologic safety of surgical maneuvers, implications of MMNP, and reconstructive options.
RECENT FINDINGS: A thorough knowledge of anatomy of the nerve can aid in its preservation. Course, branching pattern and communications of MMN are extremely variable. The Hayes Martin method classically described to preserve the nerve may not be oncological

AIM: The purpose of the study was to assess the efficacy of bone grafting from the mandibular outer cortex for reconstructing the orbital walls.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bone grafting was performed in 75 patients. The site the transplants were harvested from were: A: mental region, B: area posterior to the mental foramen, C: ramus region. In order to obtain the appropriate curvature for the orbital floor, proper selection of the donor area is required. The bony defect size was confirmed pre-operatively from 3D-CT data. Bone, characteristically 2-3 mm thick, was harvested from each area and graft

The classic management of children and adolescents with unilateral aural atresia, with or without microtia, is to assess audition, to exclude cholesteatoma formation both clinically and radiologically, to offer amplification in unilateral cases, and to consider surgical repair in bilateral cases. However, evidence indicates that children with unilateral hearing loss from any cause are at risk for delayed language development, attention deficit, and poor school performance. Favourable factors for reconstruction of hearing include a normal bone line with good word discrimination, a normal or rec

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Multiple modalities exist for reconstruction of oral cavity defects following resection. Although microvascular free tissue transfer is often the first choice for complex intraoral defect reconstruction, not all patients are suitable candidates for "free flaps." The authors present their experience with the pedicled temporoparietal fascial flap (TPFF) for reconstruction of selected intraoral defects.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
METHODS: Charts of patients who underwent a TPFF for reconstruction of intraoral defects at a tertiary academic institution betwe

The authors' aim was to introduce a simple, safe and reliable method for reconstruction of soft tissue defects after excision of carcinomas of the tongue, tongue base and posterior part of the floor of the mouth. The musculocutaneous flaps are options of larger soft tissue defects in the maxillofacial area. After excision of a tongue-tongue base tumour with mandibular splitting method a platysma myocutaneous flap was applied for reconstruction. The flap was taken from an appropriate place convenient to functional acceptions and was adapted anatomically into the defect. The result was that the

The combined use of flaps based on the subscapular vascular system for limb reconstructions has been infrequently reported. Such combinations have mainly been used for mandibular and facial reconstructions. We have used these flaps as free flaps for lower limb reconstructions in 7 patients, in 6 cases after trauma and in one after infection. A latissimus dorsi muscle or musculocutaneous flap and serratus anterior muscle flap were used together in 4 cases, and a latissimus dorsi muscle flap and parascapular flap in 3 cases. All cases healed satisfactorily. The indications for the combined use o
