Among 70 women delivering infants with nuchal cords, there was a significantly higher incidence of meconium passage and severe variable fetal heart rate decelerations/fetal bradycardia in those who had intrapartum oligohydramnios, as defined by an amniotic fluid index less than or equal to 5.0 cm. Oligohydramnios in the presence of nuchal cord entanglement might represent an increased risk of ominous intrapartum fetal heart rate patterns.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFN) is an uncommon, benign disorder found in full-term or post-mature neonates. It usually presents in neonates who have experienced perinatal difficulty such as asphyxia, peripheral hypoxemia, hypothermia, meconium aspiration or trauma. We present a newborn with abnormal findings on MRI and US within the axilla, neck, and abdominal walls that were pathologically proved via biopsy to be subcutaneous fat necrosis.

Gastrointestinal manifestations of disease are present in most adults with cystic fibrosis. Radiologists are familiar with the classical imaging characteristics of end-stage pulmonary disease and the radiological findings of meconium ileus in neonates. As most patients now live into adulthood, recognition of the imaging appearances of abdominal disease is important to enable prompt diagnosis and treatment. Accordingly, this article presents typical imaging appearances of the adult gastrointestinal manifestations of cystic fibrosis.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an accepted form of therapy in the treatment of neonates with otherwise lethal persistent pulmonary hypertension related to meconium aspiration, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and sepsis. This report concerns two neonates with congenital cystic lesions of the lung who developed severe pulmonary hypertension and were salvaged with lobectomy and ECMO. These cases present an additional group of patients in whom ECMO may be a life-saving measure.

Ultrasonography has proven to be a helpful imaging modality in evaluating the child with a distended gasless abdomen. The presence of an unsuspected mass can easily be detected as well as the presence of ascites and/or abnormally dilated loops of small bowel. Thickened loops of bowel can also be easily detected in the abdomen with very little gas. Closed loop obstruction and intussusception, as well as meconium ileus equivalent (distal intestinal obstruction syndrome), are described.

During the years 1971--1974, 230 infants born to drug-dependent women and 33 infants born to ex-addicts were studied. Heroin abuse declined while methadone usage increased during those years. Compared to heroin abuse, methadone maintenance treatment during pregnancy was associated with more consistent prenatal care, more normal fetal growth and reduced fetal mortality.
