Modulating prospective memory and attentional control with high-definition transcranial current stimulation: Study protocol of a randomized, double-blind, and sham-controlled trial in healthy older adults.

The ability to remember future intentions (i.e., prospective memory) is influenced by attentional control. At the neuronal level, frontal and parietal brain regions have been related to attentional control and prospective memory. It is debated, however, whether more or less activity in these regions is beneficial for older adults' performance. We will test that by systematically enhancing or inhibiting activity in these regions with anodal or cathodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation in older adults. We will include n = 105 healthy older volunteers (60-75 years of age) i

Computerised memory specificity training (c-MeST) for the treatment of major depression: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Major depression is a prevalent and debilitating disorder, but many sufferers do not receive support or respond to current treatments. The development of easily accessible and low-intensity treatments that have clear cognitive mechanisms of change is indicated. Memory specificity training (MeST) is an intervention for depression that targets deficits in recalling detailed memories of past experiences through repeated practice of autobiographical memory retrieval. This randomised controlled trial will assess the efficacy of an online, computerised version of MeST (c-MeST). METHOD

My future is brighter than yours: the positivity bias in episodic future thinking and future self-images.

Numerous studies on episodic future thinking have demonstrated that individuals perceive their future as more positive and idyllic than their past. It has been suggested that this positivity bias might serve a self-enhancement function. Yet, conflicting findings and lack of systematic studies on the generalizability of the phenomenon leave this interpretation uncertain. We provide the first systematic examination of the positivity bias across different domains and tasks of future thinking. First, we use the same tasks in two different domains of future thinking, representing an episodic (event

Do strategic processes contribute to the specificity of future simulation in depression?

OBJECTIVES: The tendency to generate overgeneral past or future events is characteristic of individuals with a history of depression. Although much research has investigated the contribution of rumination and avoidance to the reduced specificity of past events, comparatively little research has examined (1) whether the specificity of future events is differentially reduced in depression and (2) the role of executive functions in this phenomenon. Our study aimed to redress this imbalance. METHODS: Participants with either current or past experience of depressive symptoms ('depressive group'; N

Adult recollections of childhood memories: What details can be recalled?

In a memory survey, adult respondents recalled, dated, and described two earliest positive and negative memories that they were highly confident were memories. They then answered a series of questions that focused on memory details such as clothing, duration, weather, and so on. Few differences were found between positive and negative memories, which on average had 4/5 details and dated to the age of 6/6.5 years. Memory for details about activity, location, and who was present was good; memory for all other details was poorer or at floor. Taken together, these findings indicate that (full) ear

Rumination moderates the effects of daily events on negative mood: results from a diary study.

Rumination describes a detrimental response to distress that involves repetitive thoughts about one's emotional state and its causes and potential consequences. Many experimental studies have shown that induced state rumination exacerbates the effect of laboratory stressors on negative affect. The current study examines whether use of rumination in response to specific real-life events moderates the association between unpleasant daily events and negative mood. One hundred fifty-seven undergraduate participants completed daily diaries for six consecutive days. The daily diaries assessed curren

Severity of medial temporal atrophy and amnestic mild cognitive impairment: selecting type and number of memory tests.

OBJECTIVE: Medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTA) can be used as a biomarker of pathology that affects mechanisms of episodic memory. The authors compared the strength of this biomarker with performance on four memory measures and examined the influence of demographic factors including age, level of education, and primary language (English or Spanish). METHODS: The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-revised, Fuld Object Memory Evaluation (FOME), delayed memory for a story passage, and delayed visual reproduction of the Wechsler Memory Scale-revised tests were administered to 281 subjects who were diagn

Memory Function in Euthymic Patients with Bipolar I Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study of Clinical and Demographic Correlates.

BACKGROUND: Memory is one of the most affected cognitive domains in patients with Bipolar I Disorder, even during periods of euthymia. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between certain clinical and demographic variables and the domains of memory function in euthymic bipolar I patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 patients who were confirmed to be euthymic at the time of the research, as indicated by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores (HDRS <7) and Young Mania Rating Scale scores (YMRS <12). Recruitment was conducted between March 2021 and March 2022. T

NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery Feasibility in Individuals With Williams Syndrome.

The NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB) was developed for epidemiological and longitudinal studies across a wide age span. Such a tool may be useful for intervention trials in conditions characterized by intellectual disability (ID), such as Williams syndrome (WS). Three NIHTB-CB tasks, including two executive functioning (Flanker, Dimensional Change Card Sort) and one episodic memory (Picture Sequence Memory) task, were given to 47 individuals with WS, ages 4 to 50, to evaluate feasibility (i.e., proportion of valid administrations) in this population. Findings indicated that NIHTB-CB te

Potential anatomical basis for attentional modulation of hippocampal neurons.

Lesions of the hippocampus and related structures produce profound anterograde amnesia. The amnesia is specific to what has been called "explicit," "declarative," and "episodic" memory. These memories are frequently believed to be central to the human condition, requiring such advanced cognitive functions as attention and even consciousness. However, the hippocampus and associated structures are evolutionarily conserved, which argues that the memories of lower mammals should be qualitatively similar in nature. Just as attention and arousal are critical components of appropriate memory formatio

Getting the hang of it: preferential gist over verbatim story recall and the roles of attentional capacity and the episodic buffer in Alzheimer disease.

Story recall in Alzheimer disease (AD) is typically used as a measure of episodic memory, but the degree to which recall is dependent on available attentional resources is not fully understood. The current study investigated how measures of attention were associated to verbatim recall (exact reproduction) or gist recall (relevant semantic meaning). Sixteen participants with AD and 16 age-matched healthy older adults recalled a story on immediate free recall and recognition. Controls recalled more units overall than AD. A group X response interaction revealed more gist than verbatim recall in A

Emotion-induced retrograde amnesia varies as a function of noradrenergic-glucocorticoid activity.

RATIONALE: Privileged episodic encoding of an aversive event often comes at a cost of neutral events flanking the aversive event, resulting in decreased episodic memory for these neutral events. This peri-emotional amnesia is amygdala-dependent and varies as a function of norepinephrine activity. However, less is known about the amnesiogenic potential of cortisol. OBJECTIVE: We used a strategy of pharmacologically potentiating cortisol and norepinephrine activity to probe the putative neurochemical substrates of peri-emotional amnesia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-four healthy individuals pa

The association of memory disorders and chronic HIV disease in the antiretroviral therapy era: a systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Despite recent pharmacological progress, memory impairment is still frequently reported in people living with HIV. We aimed to conduct a systematic literature review investigating the presence of impairment of (sub)components of memory function in patients prescribed highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: We adopted a cognitive neuropsychological model of memory function as the theoretical framework, distinguishing between a short-term working memory component and a long-term component of memory, along with their specific (sub)components. We systematically searched f

Distinct brain regions are affected by neurodevelopmental or pre-dementia changes in Down syndrome.

Down syndrome, a condition characterized by triplication of chromosome 21, leads to a complex interplay between neurodevelopmental and dementia-related changes similar to the ones observed in Alzheimer's disease. Here we aimed to understand this interplay by using imaging biomarkers for different cognitive profiles in Down syndrome, and by analysing early developmental differences versus age-related changes. We analysed voxel-based morphometric measures of grey matter volume from high-resolution T1-weighted MRI in 23 adults with Down syndrome (18-59 years, five female) in preclinical/prodromal

Infant learning forms lasting memory schemas that influence adult behavior.

Early-life episodic experiences, despite seeming rapidly forgotten, are stored long-term in a latent form. The contribution of this unique hidden memory storage is not understood. Here, we show that contextual memories formed in infant mice are recovered in adulthood following weak behavioral reminders (savings) of the infantile experience. Savings in adults also facilitates new congruent learning but fails to influence other types of hippocampus-dependent learning, and this facilitation is a developmental prerogative. Both infant memory reinstatement and facilitation of new learning in adults

Response dynamics of discrete subiculum→retrosplenial cortex projections underlying trace fear conditioning.

Associating events separated in time depends on the CA1, subiculum (SUB), and retrosplenial cortex (RSP). The degree to which their connectivity and underlying circuit mechanisms contribute to the association of such temporally discontiguous events is not known. Here we showed, using trace fear conditioning (TFC), wherein mice learn to associate tone and shock separated by a temporal trace, that molecularly distinct excitatory VGluT1+ and VGluT2+ SUB→RSP projections subserve the associative and temporal components of TFC. During trace memory formation, VGluT2+ SUB→RSP projections showed increa

Reevaluating the Role of Education in Cognitive Decline and Brain Aging: Insights from Large-Scale Longitudinal Cohorts across 33 Countries.

Why education is linked to higher cognitive function in aging is fiercely debated. Leading theories propose that education reduces brain decline in aging, enhances tolerance to brain pathology, or that it does not affect cognitive decline but rather reflects higher early-life cognitive function. To test these theories, we analyzed 407.356 episodic memory scores from 170.795 participants >50 years, alongside 15.157 brain MRIs from 6.472 participants across 33 Western countries. More education was associated with better memory, larger intracranial volume and slightly larger volume of memory-sens

Impaired odor recognition memory in Parkinson's disease linked to absent functional hippocampal asymmetry.

Odor recognition memory (ORM) combines olfaction and episodic memory, both linked to dementia and impaired in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Measuring ORM may indicate early PD dementia and aid in selecting device-aided Parkinson therapy. This study investigates ORM capacity and hippocampal dynamic functional connectivity in PD. Thirty-one PD participants and 31 healthy controls (HC) underwent functional MRI during an ORM task. Co-activation pattern analysis identified active hippocampal networks. The PD group showed impaired ORM and a sequence of four activated hippocampal networks. The fourth net

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the parietal cortex leads to increased false recognition.

A robust finding is that brain activity in the lateral posterior parietal cortex (PPC) correlates with successful recognition. Here we test whether the PPC has a causal role in memory retrieval using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Participants were given a modified version of the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm, a well-established method for producing false recognition with high confidence. In Experiment 1, false recognition was significantly greater for active compared to sham tDCS when the anode was placed over left parietal cortex (CP3) and the cathode over right pa

Differential cognitive effects of colloid cysts in the third ventricle that spare or compromise the fornix.

A series of twelve cases, all of whom had received surgery for the removal of a colloid cyst in the third ventricle, was examined on a series of memory tests. The only consistent predictor of poor memory performance that could be detected from MRIs was the presence of bilateral interruption of the fornix, which occurred in three of the subjects. Although these three cases were poor on tests of learning and recall, there was evidence that recognition was less impaired. The subjects were also tested on a set of recognition and concurrent discriminations that closely matched tests given to non-hu
