[The incidence of Demodex folliculorum in patients with chronic kidney deficiency].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Demodex folliculorum in immune suppressed patients. The present study was carried out on individuals being treated for chronic kidney deficiency and immune suppressed patients that were hospitalized in the Hemodialysis Units and Internal Disease Service of the Cumhuriyet University Hospital. Forty-seven patients with chronic kidney deficiency (CKD) and a control group of thirty-eight healthy and actively exercising individuals were included in this investigation. By means of a questionnaire given to the patients and control group, complai

Demodicosis in red-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas).

Two nonrelated but paired red-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas) presented with diffuse, multifocal, raised, nonpruritic, hyperkeratotic lesions on the appendages and face. Skin biopsies identified acarids and skin scrapings confirmed demodex-like mites. The animals were treated with ivermectin, at the endoparasite dose, which initially resulted in resolution of clinical signs; however, signs recurred after numerous treatments. After four treatments with amitraz dips, demodicosis lesions resolved.

Studies in atopic asthma with emphasis on correlation among various tests and various antibodies.

The prick-test titration, allergen provocation test, acetylcholine inhalation test, total serum IgE measurement, histamine release test, and serum IgE, IgG, IgA, and IgM antibody determinations were carried out in atopic asthmatic patients who had never received immunotherapy with mite extract. Comparison of these procedures shows good correlation between them. Skin-test titration appears to be a fairly accurate and reliable method to determine causative allergens. The antigen inhalation provocation test tends to be positive among subjects with low thresholds to acetylcholine. This indicates t

Crusted Scabies leading to osteomyelitis and bilateral below-the-knee amputations - a case report.

Crusted scabies is a rare, highly contagious dermatologic condition associated with severe mite infestation, primarily affecting immunocompromised or socioeconomically vulnerable individuals. We report the case of a 38-year-old man with type two diabetes, neuropathy, and housing instability who was misdiagnosed with a hyperkeratotic skin disorder and subsequently developed bilateral foot osteomyelitis. Delayed recognition of crusted scabies led to progressive infection and ultimately necessitated bilateral below-the-knee amputations. Diagnosis was confirmed by bedside potassium hydroxide prepa

An Uncommon Presentation of Human Otoacariasis by Haemaphysalis longicornis.

Ticks are obligate parasites on animals and sometimes humans. They usually suck the blood of the hosts and can carry various infectious diseases as a vector. Otoacariasis is the presence of ticks and mites within the ear canal and relatively common in domestic and wild animals. However, tick infestations of human ear canals are rarely reported in the scientific literature and hardly occur in developed countries. Herein, we report a rare case of otoaracariasis involving Haemaphysalis longicornis . A 9-year-old girl living in a suburb presented with otalgia of left ear for 1 day. Otoscopic exami

Is demodex really non-pathogenic?

Although usually considered a non-pathogenic parasite in parasitological textbooks, Demodex folliculorum has been implicated as a causative agent for some dermatological conditions, such as rosacea-like eruptions and some types of blepharitis. Several anecdotal reports have demonstrated unequivocal tissue damage directly related to the presence of the parasite. However, this seems to be exceedingly rare, in contrast with the marked prevalence of this infestation. We have had the opportunity to observe one of such cases. A 38-year-old woman presented with rosacea-like papular lesions in her rig

Hematologic parameters of the Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica).

Thirteen hematologic parameters were measured in 52 Spanish ibexes (Capra pyrenaica) from Sierra Nevada Natural Park, southern Spain. The animals were captured, maintained in captivity, and physically restrained for blood collection. We compared hematologic values for healthy ibexes with animals infected with sarcoptic mites and animals treated for scabies and recovered. Ibexes with scabies showed a decreased number of erythrocytes, a higher mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin, and increased numbers of band neutrophils. The number of lymphocytes was significantly higher in

Crusted (Norwegian) scabies.

Crusted (Norwegian) scabies, a rare variant of ordinary scabies, is a highly contagious infection in which the skin is infested with thousands to millions of mites. The infection is frequently overlooked because of its atypical presentations. Patients with cognitive deficiency or an immunodeficiency disorder (including immunosuppressive therapy) are predisposed to developing crusted scabies. The infection often presents as generalized dermatitis with crusted hyperkeratosis on the palms and soles. Diagnosis is made by examining skin scrapings from the crusted lesions. Lindane is the scabicide m

Observations on headshaking in the horse.

The clinical records of 100 cases of headshaking in horses were reviewed. Possible causes of the abnormal behaviour were identified in 11 animals; these included ear mite infestation, otitis interna, cranial nerve dysfunction, cervical injury, ocular disease, guttural pouch mycosis, dental periapical osteitis and suspected vasomotor rhinitis. However, in only two of these could it be shown that correction of the abnormality led to elimination of the headshaking. The additional clinical signs exhibited by the other idiopathic cases of headshaking included evidence of nasal irritation, sneezing

Atypical crusted "Norwegian" scabies: report of nosocomial transmission in a community hospital and an approach to control.

During August, 1981, a person with an unrecognized case of atypical Norwegian scabies was admitted to a community hospital in Chariton, Iowa. Twenty cases of symptomatic scabies were reported among hospital staff; mites were recovered from four. Subsequent evaluation confirmed scabies transmission to family and friends of this patient before hospitalization; twelve cases of symptomatic scabies, three of them slide positive, were identified in this group. The patient was treated sequentially with 1 percent lindane lotion, 10 percent crotamiton lotion, and 6 percent sulfur ointment to successful

Predators in northern Germany are reservoirs for parasites of One Health concern.

Urbanisation and invasion of wildlife into urban areas as well as human leisure activities create diverse wildlife-domestic animal-human interfaces, increasing the risk of (zoonotic) parasite spillover from sylvatic to domestic and synanthropic cycles. This study investigated the endo- and ectoparasite fauna, emphasising on parasites of One Health Concern, of the most common predators in northern Germany between November 2013 and January 2016. Eighty red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 18 stone martens (Martes foina) and nine raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were available for the study. Overall

A Sarcoptes scabiei specific isothermal amplification assay for detection of this important ectoparasite of wombats and other animals.

BACKGROUND: The globally distributed epidermal ectoparasite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is a serious health and welfare burden to at-risk human and animal populations. Rapid and sensitive detection of S. scabiei infestation is critical for intervention strategies. While direct microscopy of skin scrapings is a widely utilised diagnostic method, it has low sensitivity. PCR, alternatively, has been shown to readily detect mite DNA even in microscopy-negative skin scrapings. However, a limitation to the latter method is the requirements for specialised equipment and reagents. Such resources may not be re

Clinical importance of Demodex folliculorum in patients receiving phototherapy.

BACKGROUND: Patients with immunodeficiency are prone to infestation with Demodex folliculorum mites. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation can lead to immunosuppression and sebaceous gland hyperplasia. Although some cases of demodicidosis related to UV radiation exposure have been reported, no studies have been performed on the incidence of D. folliculorum and its clinical characteristics in patients receiving phototherapy. Objective To investigate the effects of phototherapy on the density of D. folliculorum infestation and its clinical characteristics. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Forty-

Prevalence of honey bee (Apis mellifera) viruses in temperate and subtropical regions from Argentina.

In Argentina, bee virus studies are still incipient, and there are no studies regarding the climatic effect. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the presence of honeybee viruses in different climatic regions from Argentina. A total of 385 colonies distributed in five Argentinean eco-regions were examined to evaluate the percentage of infestation with Varroa destructor and the presence of seven virus species (Deformed wing virus, DWV; Acute bee paralysis virus, ABPV; Chronic bee paralysis virus, CBPV; Black queen cell virus, BQCV; Kashmer bee virus, KBV; Israeli acute bee paralysis

The effect of water contamination and host-related factors on ectoparasite load in an insectivorous bat.

We examined the effects of sex, age, and reproductive state of the insectivorous bat Pipistrellus kuhlii on the abundance and prevalence of arthropod ectoparasites (Macronyssidae and Cimicidae) in habitats with either sewage-polluted or natural bodies of water, in the Negev Desert, Israel. We chose water pollution as an environmental factor because of the importance of water availability in desert environments, particularly for P. kuhlii, which needs to drink on a daily basis. We predicted that parasite infestation rates would be affected by both environment and demographic cohort of the host.

Scabies Crustosa in a Patient with Insufficientia Renalis-Case Report.

BACKGROUND: SScabies is caused by the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei. The disease was first described in ancient Greece, while Ferdinand Von Hebra described the stages of development of the arthropodite from the egg to larvae and the adult form of sarcoptosis. The final stage is characterized by the travel of the female parasite and the laying of eggs in stratum corneum and followed by the death of the causer. The main characteristic symptom of scabies is relentless pruritus which is a result of such an infestation inside the skin, as the body reacts to parasites and their excretions, where mites

Scabies itch: an update on neuroimmune interactions and novel targets.

Frequently described as 'the worst itch' one can ever experience scabies itch is the hallmark of Sarcoptes scabiei mite infestation. Notably, the itchiness often persists for weeks despite scabicides therapy. The mechanism of scabies itch is not yet fully understood, and effective treatment modalities are still missing which can severely affect the quality of life. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the scope of itch in scabies and highlight candidate mechanisms underlying this itch. We herein discuss scabies itch, with a focus on the nature, candidate underlying mechanisms an

Suppression of Plant Defenses by Herbivorous Mites Is Not Associated with Adaptation to Host Plants.

Some herbivores suppress plant defenses, which may be viewed as a result of the coevolutionary arms race between plants and herbivores. However, this ability is usually studied in a one-herbivore-one-plant system, which hampers comparative studies that could corroborate this hypothesis. Here, we extend this paradigm and ask whether the herbivorous spider-mite Tetranychus evansi, which suppresses the jasmonic-acid pathway in tomato plants, is also able to suppress defenses in other host plants at different phylogenetic distances from tomatoes. We test this using different plants from the Solana

The efficiency of Amblyseius swirskii in control of Tetranychus urticae and Trialeurodes vaporariorum is affected by various factors.

Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot is a well-known predator that is used for controlling the population of two-spotted spider mites (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, and greenhouse whitefly (GHWF), Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood, in strawberry greenhouses. To find the effective factors that influence the efficiency of this predator, the predation rates of A. swirskii fed on (Ι) TSSM in the presence and absence of the pollen, webbing, and GHWF, as well as on (II) GHWF in the presence and absence of the pollen, and GHWF-produced honeydew were determined. Furthermore, developmental time, fecu
