The 49th hour: analysis of a follow-up medication and vaccine dispensing field test.

Anthrax response plans, exercises, and assessments over the past decade have focused almost exclusively on the first 48 hours of the public health response following a jurisdiction-wide exposure and provision of an initial 10-day supply of antibiotics from the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS). But mass dispensing of the subsequent 50-day course of antibiotics and administration of the 3-dose vaccine series have received considerably less attention, although these follow-up activities may prove even more complex. In 2014, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) made its first fora

Do technical skills correlate with non-technical skills in crisis resource management: a simulation study.

BACKGROUND: Both technical skills (TS) and non-technical skills (NTS) are key to ensuring patient safety in acute care practice and effective crisis management. These skills are often taught and assessed separately. We hypothesized that TS and NTS are not independent of each other, and we aimed to evaluate the relationship between TS and NTS during a simulated intraoperative crisis scenario. METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of performances from a previously published work. After institutional ethics approval, 50 anaesthesiology residents managed a simulated crisis scenario of

A typology for health care teams.

BACKGROUND: Effective interdisciplinary health care teamwork improves clinical and financial outcomes, and training and assessment of team competencies are central to establishing high-functioning health care teams. The roles that team members assume in the provision of patient care are important contributors to effective health care team performance; however, variability among health care practitioners can lead to philosophical, political, social, and clinical differences in perceptions and recommendations for patient care as well as expected communication patterns and protocols. PURPOSE: Th

Broadening participation in community problem solving: a multidisciplinary model to support collaborative practice and research.

Over the last 40 years, thousands of communities-in the United States and internationally-have been working to broaden the involvement of people and organizations in addressing community-level problems related to health and other areas. Yet, in spite of this experience, many communities are having substantial difficulty achieving their collaborative objective, and many funders of community partnerships and participation initiatives are looking for ways to get more out of their investment. One of the reasons we are in this predicament is that the practitioners and researchers who are interested

One positive impact of health care reform to physicians: the computer-based patient record.

The health care industry is an information-dependent business that will require a new generation of health information systems if successful health care reform is to occur. We critically need integrated clinical management information systems to support the physician and related clinicians at the direct care level, which in turn will have linkages with secondary users of health information such as health payors, regulators, and researchers. The economic dependence of health care industry on the CPR cannot be underestimated, says Jeffrey Ritter. He sees the U.S. health industry as about to ente

Consequences of Exposure to Violence, Aggression, and Sexual Harassment in Private Security Work: A Mediation Model.

While exposure to violence and aggression is well known for its detrimental effects on employees' health as well as organizational outcomes, certain high-risk work domains have scarcely been researched. Thus, this study set out to determine negative consequences of work-related exposure to four forms of harmful behaviors in private security. In a sample of 487 German-speaking security guards, 23% had experienced outsider-initiated violence, 56% aggressive acts, 30% vicarious violent acts, and 3% were sexually harassed over the past 12 months. Additionally, 19% reported substantial to extreme w

Identifying community healthcare supports for the elderly and the factors affecting their aging care model preference: evidence from three districts of Beijing.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese tradition of filial piety, which prioritized family-based care for the elderly, is transitioning and elders can no longer necessarily rely on their children. The purpose of this study was to identify community support for the elderly, and analyze the factors that affect which model of old-age care elderly people dwelling in communities prefer. METHODS: We used the database "Health and Social Support of Elderly Population in Community". Questionnaires were issued in 2013, covering 3 districts in Beijing. A group of 1036 people over 60 years in age were included in the s

Stabilizing Protein and Protein-RNA Condensates in Low-Melting Agarose Hydrogels for Quantitative Biophysical Measurements.

Biomolecular condensates formed by liquid-liquid phase separation are increasingly recognized as fundamental organizational units of the cell, with roles ranging from RNA processing to stress granule assembly. In vitro reconstitution of such condensates using purified proteins and RNA provides model systems, yet liquid droplets coarsen, sediment, and spread on surfaces over time, introducing significant variability into quantitative measurements over experimental timeframes. Embedding these condensates within a sparse, optically transparent, and chemically inert hydrogel-here prepared from low

Agile culture, employee mindset, and agile organizations' development: adhocracy, clan, market, and hierarchy perspectives.

An agile organization, as an integrated, efficient, and adaptable system, responds to the needs of a rapidly evolving business landscape. Because organizational culture shapes behavior and enhances capabilities, this research examines whether different cultural types and ambitions for agility can equally develop an agile culture. Specifically, it examines how a functional agile culture affects employees with agile and non-agile mindsets across adhocracy, clan, market, and hierarchy cultures to facilitate an agile organization's growth. The study employs structural equation modeling (SEM) to an

Posttraumatic Growth as a Pathway to Wellness for Individuals and Organizations.

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) offers an alternative understanding of trauma response, contrasting with traditional perspectives focused solely on symptom development and resilience. In the PTG model, individuals and groups report positive changes in life philosophy, self-understanding, and interpersonal relationships because of successfully navigating the struggles involved with experiencing adversity. This narrative review includes the evolution of PTG theory, highlighting the disruption of core beliefs, the role of rumination, and the reconstruction of a life narrative as central mechanisms of
