This study introduces a dual-hybrid COVID-19 forecasting modeling approach that integrates an eight-compartment SEAIQHRD model with Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) and ARIMA-based residual learning to enhance predictive performance. A central methodological contribution is the incorporation of convergence and stability diagnostics, demonstrating reliable parameter estimation through multi-start optimization and bootstrap analysis. Although the SEAIQHRD model captures core disease progression, it is limited in representing nonlinear multi-wave patterns and reporting inconsistencies. The SEAIQ

This study introduces a catastrophe-theoretic framework for modeling the multi-wave trajectories of COVID-19 incidence across U.S. states, addressing key shortcomings of traditional epidemic models. Using daily cumulative case counts from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, we fit quintic polynomials and swallowtail catastrophe models to ln-transformed data. The swallowtail model captures abrupt transitions, wave phenomena, and healthcare workload effects often missed by conventional SIR and SEIR approaches. Polynomial fits were excellent overall, with significantly better performance

Motivated by the analysis of data from a clinical trial on patients with early breast cancer, we propose in this paper a new joint model that uses a Tobit partly linear mixed model for longitudinal measurements which are bounded in an interval and have a nonlinear relationship with the observation times and a semiparametric mixture cure model that incorporates a B-spline baseline hazard for survival times with cure proportion. A procedure is developed for estimating parameters in the proposed model using the partial likelihood and Laplace approximation. Additionally, a method of random weighti

Clinical trials and cohort studies often aim to assess treatment effects or exposure associations in relation to the risk of one or more diseases, with death of the study participant as a competing risk. If the diseases under study are major health concerns, it may not be appropriate to assume that death acts as an independent source of right-censoring. When this occurs, a summary of treatment or exposure influences should consider disease incidence and death jointly. Here we consider some modeling approaches to doing so, starting with type-specific (cause-specific) hazard functions. We also m

BACKGROUND: In environmental epidemiology and many other fields, estimating the causal effects of multiple concurrent exposures holds great promise for driving public health interventions and policy changes. Given the predominant reliance on observational data, confounding remains a key consideration, and generalized propensity score (GPS) methods are widely used as causal models to control measured confounders. However, current GPS methods for multiple continuous exposures remain scarce.
METHODS: We proposed a novel causal model for exposure mixtures, called nonparametric multivariate covari

PURPOSE: Generalized (g-) computation is a useful tool for causal inference in epidemiology. However, in settings when the outcome is a survival time subject to right censoring, the standard pooled logistic regression approach to g-computation requires arbitrary discretization of time, parametric modeling of the baseline hazard function, and the need to expand one's dataset. We illustrate a semiparametric Breslow estimator for g-computation with time-fixed treatments and survival outcomes that is not subject to these limitations.
METHODS: We compare performance of the Breslow g-computation es

BACKGROUND: Dynamical mathematical models defined by a system of differential equations are typically not easily accessible to non-experts. However, forecasts based on these types of models can help gain insights into the mechanisms driving the process and may outcompete simpler phenomenological growth models. Here we introduce a friendly toolbox, SpatialWavePredict, to characterize and forecast the spatial wave sub-epidemic model, which captures diverse wave dynamics by aggregating multiple asynchronous growth processes and has outperformed simpler phenomenological growth models in short-term

Chitosan was impregnated into porous activated coal to produce a multifunctional chitosan/activated coal (Cs/Ac) composite. The resulted Cs/Ac was characterized and utilized as a cost-effective adsorbent for Mn(VII) at altered temperatures (i.e., 25, 35, and 45 °C). The adsorption results were fitted to classical as well as advanced statistical physics models. The Freundlich equation described well the achieved experimental data at all temperatures. Enhancing the Langmuir adsorption capacity from 203.26 to 224.03 mg/g with temperature indicated that Mn(VII) adsorption was an endothermic proces

Phenomenological growth models (PGMs) provide a framework for characterizing epidemic trajectories, estimating key transmission parameters, gaining insight into the contribution of various transmission pathways, and providing long-term and short-term forecasts. Such models only require a small number of parameters to describe epidemic growth patterns. They can be expressed by an ordinary differential equation (ODE) of the type C'(t)=f(t,C;Θ) for t>0, C(0)=C0, where t is time, C(t) is the total size of the epidemic (the cumulative number of cases) at time t, C0 is the initial number of cases, f

Acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis is a highly contagious eye disease, the prediction of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis is very important to prevent and grasp its development trend. We use the exponential smoothing model and the seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model to analyse and predict. The monthly incidence data from 2004 to 2017 were used to fit two models, the actual incidence of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis in 2018 was used to validate the model. Finally, the prediction effect of exponential smoothing is best, the mean square error and the mean absolute

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is seriously endemic in China with 70%~90% of the notified cases worldwide and showing an epidemic tendency of upturn in recent years. Early detection for its future epidemic trends plays a pivotal role in combating this threat. In this scenario, our study investigates the suitability for application in analyzing and forecasting the epidemic tendencies based on the monthly HFRS morbidity data from 2005 through 2019 using the nonlinear model-based self-exciting threshold autoregressive (SETAR) and logistic smooth transition autoregressive (LSTAR) met

Topological indices are numerical parameters used to study the physical and chemical properties of compounds. In quantitative structure⁻activity relationship QSARs, topological indices correlate the biological activity of compounds with their physical properties like boiling point, stability, melting point, distortion, and strain energy etc. In this paper, we determined the M-polynomials of the crystallographic structure of the molecules Cu₂O and TiF₂ [p,q,r]. Then we derived closed formulas for some well-known topological indices using calculus. In the end, we used Maple 15 to plot surfaces a

In this study the relationship between the viscoelasticity/mechanical properties of metronidazole-containing aqueous polymer networks composed of HEC and PVP and drug release was statistically modelled. The networks were characterised using oscillatory analysis and drug release was performed using dissolution analysis (pH 7.4). Statistical modelling of the rheological properties and their relationship with drug release was performed using Analysis of Variance, Multivariate Analysis of Variance and stepwise regression. Modelling of drug release was performed using both the Korsmeyer-Peppas and

Despite great progress in eliminating trachoma from the majority of worldwide districts, trachoma control seems to have stalled in some endemic districts. Can mathematical models help suggest the way forward? We review specific achievements of models in trachoma control in the past. Models showed that, even with incomplete coverage, mass drug administration could eliminate disease through a spillover effect, somewhat analogous to how incomplete vaccine campaigns can eliminate disease through herd protection. Models also suggest that elimination can always be achieved if enough people are treat

In preparation for ICD-11, the adjustment disorder (AjD) diagnosis has undergone considerable revisions; however, the latent structure of AjD remains uncertain. It is unclear whether AjD is best represented as a unidimensional or multidimensional construct. This study performed a comprehensive assessment of the latent structure of AjD symptomatology and assessed its concurrent and discriminant validity. Individuals who experienced involuntary job loss (N = 333) completed a self-report measure of AjD symptoms. Seven alternative models of AjD were tested using confirmatory factor analysis. Gener

Marginal structural models for time-fixed treatments fit using inverse-probability weighted estimating equations are increasingly popular. Nonetheless, the resulting effect estimates are subject to finite-sample bias when data are sparse, as is typical for large-sample procedures. Here we propose a semi-Bayes estimation approach which penalizes or shrinks the estimated model parameters to improve finite-sample performance. This approach uses simple symmetric data-augmentation priors. Limited simulation experiments indicate that the proposed approach reduces finite-sample bias and improves conf

BACKGROUND: Comparing model expectations with the experience of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) containing serotype 2 (OPV2) cessation can inform risk management for the expected cessation of OPV containing serotypes 1 and 3 (OPV13).
METHODS: We compare the expected post-OPV2-cessation OPV2-related viruses from models with the evidence available approximately 6 months after OPV2 cessation. We also model the trade-offs of use vs nonuse of monovalent OPV (mOPV) for outbreak response considering all 3 serotypes.
RESULTS: Although too early to tell definitively, the observed die-out of OPV2-relate

We propose a two-step procedure to personalize drug dosage over time under the framework of a log-linear mixed-effect model. We model patients' heterogeneity using subject-specific random effects, which are treated as the realizations of an unspecified stochastic process. We extend the conditional quadratic inference function to estimate both fixed-effect coefficients and individual random effects on a longitudinal training data sample in the first step and propose an adaptive procedure to estimate new patients' random effects and provide dosage recommendations for new patients in the second s

A linear-linear piecewise growth mixture model (PGMM) is appropriate for analyzing segmented (disjointed) change in individual behavior over time, where the data come from a mixture of 2 or more latent classes, and the underlying growth trajectories in the different segments of the developmental process within each latent class are linear. A PGMM allows the knot (change point), the time of transition from 1 phase (segment) to another, to be estimated (when it is not known a priori) along with the other model parameters. To assist researchers in deciding which estimation method is most advantag

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox and reactivation of latent VZV causes herpes zoster (HZ). VZV reactivation is subject to the opposing mechanisms of declining and boosted VZV-specific cellular mediated immunity (CMI). A reduction in exogenous re-exposure 'opportunities' through universal chickenpox vaccination could therefore lead to an increase in HZ incidence. We present the first individual-based model that integrates within-host data on VZV-CMI and between-host transmission data to simulate HZ incidence. This model allows estimating currently unknown pivotal biomedical parame
