Impingement syndrome and rotator cuff disease as repetitive motion disorders.

The relationship between repetitive motion and subacromial impingement and rotator cuff disease is controversial and poorly understood. The potential etiology is multifactorial and involves patient related factors (age, supraspinatus outlet anatomy, and preexisting rotator cuff pathology) and worker related factors (arm position, lifting requirements, numbers of repetitions). Radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities may represent preexisting disease that could have predisposed the patient to the development of impingement syndrome, but should be interpreted cautiously within t…

Motion perception thresholds in areas of glaucomatous visual field loss.

This study examined whether one can differentiate between areas of known visual field loss and areas of known relative field sparing in eyes with primary open angle glaucoma using motion coherence thresholds. Two visual field locations from patients with primary open angle glaucoma (n = 14), which differed significantly in sensitivity, were selected for presentation of a motion stimulus. In the area of visual field loss mean threshold was 17.4 +/- 4.1 dB (1.74 +/- 0.41 log units relative to the brightest stimulus). In the area of relative field sparing mean threshold was 27.0 +/- 3.6 dB (2.70 …

Adaptation to optokinetic rotation-induced motion sickness without experiencing nausea.

17 subjects highly susceptible to motion sickness were divided into Nausea and No-nausea groups depending upon whether the subjects experienced nausea during adaptation to nauseagenic rotation. Eight subjects in the Nausea group viewed an optokinetic rotation drum for repeated sessions of 16 min., with an interval of two days between every two sessions. During each session the subjects continuously viewed the rotating drum 16 min. even if they experienced nausea. nine subjects in the No-nausea group likewise viewed an optokinetic rotation drum for at most 16 min. but immediately stopped viewin…

Active posture control during experimental motion sickness in guinea-pigs.

This study evaluated active posture control in guinea-pigs under motion sickness stimulation. Twelve guinea-pigs, which received training to stay on a moving perch, were divided into two groups: a motion sickness stimulation group and a control group. The motion sickness group was given a combined stimulation of turntable rotation and optokinetic drum rotation, and the control group was given turntable stimulation alone. Motion sickness was evaluated by conditioned taste aversion to saccharin solution. Active posture control was evaluated by the angle of nose tip displacement and the staying d…

Self-organizing multi-resolution grid for motion planning and control.

A fully self-organizing neural network approach to low-dimensional control problems is described. We consider the problem of learning to con … d-Direction-to-Action (MPDA) map. The architecture integrates reactive path planning and continuous motion control. It is also shown that the scheme leads to population coding for the actual command vector.

Changes in interdigestive migrating electric complex induced by motion sickness.

This study aimed to investigate, by means of an intralumenal recording technique, the influence of motion sickness on the interdigestive migrating electric complex (IDMEC) of the gastrointestinal system of susceptible subjects. The results indicate that vestibular stimulations significantly change the duration of IDMEC phases (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01): phase I in both the stomach and duodenum decreases, the duration of phase II and phase III is changed differently in the stomach and in the duodenum.

Early active short arc motion for the repaired central slip.

This study compared the functional results in patients with open and repaired central slip injuries treated by two different postoperative management methods. The groups were similar in number of patients and amount of complex injuries. The comparisons made were proximal interphalangeal joint extensor lag, flexion at distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints, total active motion, and length of treatment required. Patients in group 1 were treated with 3-6 weeks of continuous immobilization followed by a vigorous standard rehabilitation program. Patients in group 2 were treated …

Preflight adaptation training for spatial orientation and space motion sickness.

Two part-task preflight adaptation trainers (PATs) are being developed at the NASA Johnson Space Center to preadapt astronauts to novel sensory stimulus conditions similar to those present in microgravity to facilitate adaptation to microgravity and readaptation to Earth. This activity is a major component of a general effort to develop countermeasures aimed at minimizing sensory and sensorimotor disturbances and Space Motion Sickness (SMS) associated with adaptation to microgravity and readaptation to Earth. Design principles for the development of the two trainers are discussed, along with a…

Perceptual scaling of whole-body low frequency linear oscillatory motion.

Evidence that Z-axis oscillation in the Earth-vertical plane is more provocative of motion sickness than the equivalent imposed oscillation acting in the Earth-horizontal raises the possibility that horizontal oscillation is perceived as less intense than equivalent vertical oscillation. In Experiment 1, subjects (n = 8) were oscillated through their head Z-axis in both the Earth-vertical and horizontal planes. In Experiment 2, another group (n = 10) were oscillated through their head Y-axis in the Earth-horizontal. Stimuli were 5 cycles of motion at 0.3 Hz ranging in 3.5 dB intervals from 0.1…

Motion sickness susceptibility in parabolic flight and velocity storage activity.

In parabolic flight experiments, we have found post-rotary nystagmus to be differentially suppressed in free fall (OG) and in a high gravitoinertial force (1.8G) background relative to 1G. In addition, the influence of postrotary head movements on nystagmus suppression was found to be contingent on G level. The nature of this pattern indicated a G-dependency of the velocity storage and dumping mechanisms. Here, we have rank-correlated susceptibility to motion sickness during head movements in OG and 1.8G with the following: a) the decay time constant of the slow phase velocity of post-rotary n…

'Real-motion' cells in area V3A of macaque visual cortex.

The stability of visual perception despite eye movements suggests the existence, in the visual system, of neural elements able to recognize whether a movement of an image occurring in a particular part of the retina is the consequence of an actual movement that occurred in the visual field, or self-induced by an ocular movement while the object was still in the field of view. Recordings from single neurons in area V3A of awake macaque monkeys were made to check the existence of such a type of neurons (called 'real-motion' cells; see Galletti et al. 1984, 1988) in this prestriate area of the vi…

The role of continuous passive motion following total knee arthroplasty.

A retrospective review of 25 knees with postoperative continuous passive motion (CPM) treatment following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) was compared with a control group of 25 knees without postoperative CPM. The diagnoses were similar in both groups, with osteoarthritis in 43 knees, traumatic arthritis in 2 knees, rheumatoid arthritis in 2 knees, osteonecrosis in one knee, and gouty arthritis in one knee. Average knee flexion at discharge was 93.2 degrees in the CPM group and 86.5 degrees in the control group (p less than 0.01). Eighty percent of the CPM group and 64% of the control group had…

Salivary changes associated with experimental motion sickness condition in man.

The effect of experimental motion sickness condition (rotation) on salivary flow and composition was studied in 34 healthy male volunteers. In most subjects, the flow rate of whole saliva was significantly decreased, while the potassium concentration was markedly increased during rotation. These results contrast with the classic reports of subjectively increased salivation in the first stages of motion sickness and may tentatively be explained in terms of sympathetic activation. The salivary protein concentration and secretion rate observed before and during rotation were consistently higher i…

Treatment of severe motion sickness with antimotion sickness drug injections.

This report concerns the use of intramuscular injections of scopolamine, promethazine, and dramamine to treat severely motion sick individuals participating in parabolic flight experiments. The findings indicate that a majority of individuals received benefit from 50-mg injections of promethazine or 0.5mg-injections of scopolamine. By contrast, 50-mg injections of dramamine and 25-mg injections of promethazine were nonbeneficial. The use of antimotion drug injections for treating space motion sickness is discussed.

Reversibility of cardiac wall-motion abnormalities predicted by positron tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET) can be used with nitrogen-13-ammonia (13NH3) to estimate regional myocardial blood flow, and with fluorine-18-deoxyglucose (18FDG) to measure exogenous glucose uptake by the myocardium. We used PET to predict whether preoperative abnormalities in left ventricular wall motion in 17 patients who underwent coronary-artery bypass surgery were reversible. The abnormalities were quantified by radionuclide or contrast angiography or both, before and after grafting. PET images were obtained preoperatively. Abnormal wall motion in regions in which PET images showed pr…

Regional left ventricular wall motion abnormalities in chronic volume overload.

Computer-assisted analysis of left ventricular (LV) wall motion has been performed in 12 patients (pts) with chronic volume overload and in seven normal subjects. All pts were in sinus rhythm, without congestive heart failure and without coronary artery disease at selective coronary angiography; 30 degrees right anterior oblique ventriculograms were employed in each case. Thirty-six radiants were automatically traced and the percent shortening of each radiant was calculated using two different reference methods (fix and floating methods). In valvular heart disease (VHD) pts LV volumes were sig…

The relationship between aortic valve closure and aortic root motion.

The minimum interval between aortic valve closure and the onset of posterior motion of the posterior aortic wall (C--PW) was obtained from M-mode echographic studies in normal subjects and patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), rheumatic mitral stenosis (MS), mixed rheumatic MS and MR, pure aortic stenosis (AS), and pure aortic insufficiency. Three-fourths of the patients with MR and 2/3 of those with AS had short C--PW intervals. Short C--PW intervals are probably the result of early mitral valve opening with rapid LA emptying, whereas slow emptying due to dilated, relatively inert left atr…

Nystagmus, turning sensations, and illusory movement in motion sickness susceptibility.

The relationships of motion sickness susceptibility to nystagmic eye movements, sensations of turning, and duration of the spiral aftereffect were determined with 48 subjects separated into groups on the basis of sex and extremes of motion sickness susceptibility. When subjective alertness levels were controlled, there was no enhancement of elicited nystagmus nor turning sensations in susceptible individuals. However, spiral aftereffect durations were significantly longer in susceptible individuals than in nonsusceptible individuals. The results are interpreted as favoring Graybiel's model of …
