Fatigue in inflammatory bowel disease: Prevalence, risk factors, assessment, outcomes, and management.

Fatigue is a prevalent and often debilitating symptom in individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), affecting a substantial proportion of patients, even during periods of disease remission. The prevalence of fatigue in IBD remains high, affecting around half of the IBD patients and being more common in patients with active disease than those in remission. Several risk factors contribute to fatigue in IBD, including active disease and pro-inflammatory state, nutritional deficiencies and anemia, sleep disturbances, psychological comorbidities, microbiota changes and the gut-brain axis, m

Hip extensor fatigue alters hip and knee coupling dynamics during single-limb step-downs: A randomized controlled trial.

Impaired hip muscle function may cause movement coordination deficits that increase lower extremity injury risks. We examined whether hip and knee coordination is altered during single-limb step-downs following a hip extensor fatigue protocol. Forty participants in this randomized controlled trial performed 20 single-limb step-downs before and after completing either a fatigue protocol or a sham fatigue protocol. Means and SDs of sagittal and frontal plane hip and knee kinematics were measured. Nonlinear measures of coupled hip and knee coordination were examined with cross recurrence quantifi

The effectiveness of stretching exercises in patients with fibromyalgia: A systematic review.

Fibromyalgia is one of the most prevalent chronic pain disorders. Fibromyalgia is characterised by generalised pain. In addition, patients with fibromyalgia often have co-morbidity. Since no cure is available, the treatment is based on symptom management, with physical exercise being the recommended first-line treatment. Different exercise modalities have been examined, including the practice of stretching exercises. The aim of the systematic review is to summarise the efficacy of stretching exercises on fibromyalgia symptoms and to study the content and the quality of the current evidence. Th

Effects of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts and Stretching Exercises on Symptoms of Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and various associated symptoms. Non-pharmacological interventions have gained attention for managing FMS and improving patient outcomes. We reviewed past research to investigate the effects of traditional Chinese martial arts (TCMA) and stretching training (ST) on symptoms of patients with FMS. We searched Web of Science, Medline via PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and EMBASE from their inceptions to June 1, 2023. Across selected studies, we evaluated TCMA and ST using Fibromyalgia Impact Questio

Reduced running performance and greater perceived exertion, but similar post-exercise neuromuscular fatigue in tropical natives subjected to a 10 km self-paced run in a hot compared to a temperate environment.

Environmental heat stress impairs endurance performance by enhancing exercise-induced physiological and perceptual responses. However, the time course of these responses during self-paced running, particularly when comparing hot and temperate conditions, still needs further clarification. Moreover, monitoring fatigue induced by exercise is paramount to prescribing training and recovery adequately, but investigations on the effects of a hot environment on post-exercise neuromuscular fatigue are scarce. This study compared the time course of physiological and perceptual responses during a 10 km

Fatigue-induced Alterations of the Patellar Tendon in Elite Sprint Track Cyclists.

This study aims to investigate morphological and mechanical properties and echogenicity of the patellar tendon (PT) after acute fatigue-induced alterations in sprint track cyclists. Fourteen elite track cyclists participated in this study. The exercise protocol consisted of three maximal start accelerations (over a distance of 62.5 m), one maximal start acceleration (at both 125 m and 250 m), and sprints from the standing start. Immediately after testing all measurements, PT stiffness and thickness were set at 5-10-15-20 mm distal from the apex of the patella and 5-10 mm proximal to the tibial

Implications of lower extremity muscle power and force for walking and fatigability in multiple sclerosis - An exploratory pilot-study.

BACKGROUND: Limitations in physical function are common in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), yet it is neither clear how muscle power implicates physical function and walking-fatigability. This pilot-study aims to investigate (1) deficits in muscle power/force alongside walking in persons with MS; (2) associations between muscle power/force and physical functions and (3) the impact of prolonged walking in muscle power/force. METHODS: 30 relapse-remitting persons with MS and 28 healthy controls performed chair rise and plantar flexion on a force platform before and after 12-minutes of intermittent walk

Stumbling, struggling, and shame due to spasticity: a qualitative study of adult persons with hereditary spastic paraplegia.

Purpose: Little is known concerning the impact of chronic spasticity on physical activities, social participation, and well-being, and whether patients' needs are addressed by current treatments. This study aims to investigate these lacunas in persons with a pure form of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), in whom spasticity is a prominent symptom. Methods: Fourteen patients with a pure form of HSP were interviewed. These interviews were recorded, verbally transcribed, and thematically analyzed. Results: Four themes were identified which can be reflected by the phrases: (1) 'I stumble', (2) 'I

Mechanisms of cancer-related fatigue.

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most prevalent symptoms patients with cancer experience, both during and after treatment. CRF is pervasive and affects patients' quality of life considerably. It is important, therefore, to understand the underlying pathophysiology of CRF in order to develop useful strategies for prevention and treatment. At present, the etiology of CRF is poorly understood and the relative contributions of the neoplastic disease, various forms of cancer therapy, and comorbid conditions (e.g., anemia, cachexia, sleep disorders, depression) remain unclear. In any indiv

Doublets in motor unit activity of human forearm muscle during simulated computer work.

Motor unit firing pattern and characteristics were analyzed during voluntary contractions as they occur during computer work. For comparison controlled standard ramp contractions were performed. Highly diverse firing patterns were identified while the MU characteristics were similar. Of special notice is the frequent occurrence of double discharges during computer like work but not during ramp contractions.

Ischaemic pre-conditioning improves workload, fatigue and recovery in team sport: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial.

Ischaemic preconditioning (IPC) is reported to improve performance, fatigue and recovery, yet evidence in team-sport settings remains limited. We examined the effects of repeated IPC on external workload, perceptual strain and recovery during ecologically valid Gaelic football training. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design, 13 male players completed two identical pitch sessions following IPC (3 × 5 min 220 mmHg occlusions; 48 h, 24 h and 30 min pre-session) or placebo. Global positioning system-quantified external load, and perceptual outcomes (fatigue, soreness,

Supervised, individualised exercise reduces fatigue and improves strength and quality of life more than unsupervised home exercise in people with chronic Guillain-Barré syndrome: a randomised trial.

QUESTION: In people in the chronic phase of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), how much more does a supervised, individualised exercise program improve functional independence with activities of daily living than a home-based exercise program? How do the two exercise programs compare regarding their effects on muscle strength, fatigue, pain and quality of life? DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial with concealed allocation, intention-to-treat analysis and blinding of outcome assessors. PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen adults with stable residual disability ≥ 6 months after the onset of GBS. INTERVENTION: P

[Pompe disease is a differential diagnosis in case of reduced physical capacity and abnormal muscular fatigue].

Late-onset Pompe disease is an inherited metabolic myopathy with low activity of alpha glucosidase and variable clinical symptoms. In this case report we describe a woman with long standing muscular fatigue and malaise with the diagnosis initially established by pathologic findings in the muscle biopsy. Enzyme replacement therapy is now a treatment option, and a prompt diagnosis is therefore relevant. This disease should be considered in patients with unexplained fatigue and reduced physical capacity, especially in case of concurrent elevated levels of creatine kinase and liver enzymes.

The inhibitory effect of a chewing task on a human jaw reflex.

This study was undertaken to investigate whether an inhibitory jaw reflex could be modulated by experimentally controlled conditions that mimicked symptoms of temporomandibular disorders. Reflecting on previous work, we anticipated that these conditions might suppress the reflex. Electromyographic recordings were made from a masseter muscle in 18 subjects, while electrical stimuli were applied to the upper lip. An inhibitory reflex wave (mean latency 47 ms) was identified and quantified. Immediately following an accelerated chewing task, which in most cases produced muscle fatigue and/or pain,…

[An autopsy case of polymyositis with exacerbation of chronic myocarditis].

A 38-year-old man had suffered from general fatigue, mild weakness of proximal muscles, and dry cough in November, 2000. Serum levels of muscle enzymes were elevated. Computed tomography of the chest revealed reticular appearance in the bilateral dorsal lung areas. He did not show any improvement, therefore he was referred to our hospital in April, 2001. He was diagnosed as mild polymyositis with mild interstitial pneumonia. He was treated intravenously with methylprednisolone pulse therapy. During the pulse therapy serum level of creatine kinase was decreased, but he died because of acute pum

Fatigue-induced changes in electromyographic activity after repeated racing turns: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Alpine skiing races are physically demanding events characterized by numerous repeated near-maximal activations of the lower limb muscles. Although this type of task is known to induce neuromuscular fatigue, electromyographic activity (EMG) adaptations after repeated maximal-intensity skiing have not been previously investigated. METHODS: Six skiers completed a 6-turns section with (FAT) and without performing 30 giant slalom (GS) turns (CONT). Isometric knee extensors maximal force (Fmax) was measured before and immediately after both conditions. On-snow EMG activity of VM, VL, RF,
