[The importance of sonography in orthopedics for dogs].

For the ultrasonographic examination of the musculoskeletal system in dogs a 7,5 MHz linear scanner is used best, in some cases with a standoff pad. Radiography is the technique of choice to detect bone abnormalities. For certain circumstances the sonography can be used to give additional information (e.g. surrounding tissue with osteomyelitis or bone tumors). For the diagnostic of joint diseases ultrasonography is an excellent completion for the radiographic examination. Joint effusion and thickened capsule can be detected. Defects of articular cartilage like osteochondrosis dissecans in the …

Multifocal bacterial osteomyelitis after varicella infection: a rare but dreaded complication of chickenpox.

Chickenpox is an infectious disease common in children, which in most cases is benign toward the self-limited resolution. There are, however, serious systemic and musculoskeletal complications, especially in patients with immunosuppression. We report a case of multifocal skeletal muscle involvement, as a complication of chickenpox by Streptococcus pyogenes.

Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms after musculoskeletal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are common following musculoskeletal trauma and are associated with poorer recovery, disability, and reduced quality of life. Although psychosocial and injury-related factors have been linked to PTSS, limited research has examined longitudinal predictors or the relationship between injury severity and PTSS progression in people hospitalised for musculoskeletal trauma. OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of PTSS at three and six months following musculoskeletal trauma and hospitalisation, and to examine the relationship between injury severity a

Investigating the Effect of Blood Groups on the Risk of Musculoskeletal Injuries: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Human blood groups classically are described: A, B, AB, and O, and the presence or absence of the Rh antigen on them plays an important role in determining these groups. Previous studies have examined the relationship between blood groups and metabolic diseases. However, no study has yet investigated the relationship between blood groups and musculoskeletal injuries, and this issue has not been fully clarified. This systematic review investigates the association between blood groups and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. DATA SOURCES: This study was conducted according to the gu

Beyond the Heart: Exploring Extracardiac Manifestations in Cardiac Amyloidosis for Early Diagnosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines extracardiac manifestations of cardiac amyloidosis and their potential role in early diagnosis and management. Multisystem involvement, including musculoskeletal, peripheral nervous system, and other extracardiac findings are highlighted to serve as red flags for earlier detection. RECENT FINDINGS: Early screening for high-risk individuals over 50 with CTS or spinal stenosis could enable earlier intervention. Peripheral neuropathy and CTS often precede cardiac involvement by 5-10 years, while spinal stenosis can precede it by 5-15 years. Other indicator

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Sports Musculoskeletal Injuries.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a well-established treatment for a variety of conditions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the administration of 100% oxygen breathing in a pressure vessel at higher than atmospheric pressure (1 atmosphere absolute = 101 kPa). Typically, treatment is given daily for between 1 and 2 h at pressures of 2.0 to 2.8 ATA, depending on the indication. Sporting injuries are often treated over 3 to 10 sessions. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been documented to be effective and is approved in 14 medical indications by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, including,

[Tumor-like bony lesions of the skeleton].

Tumor-like bony lesions are, by definition bony lesions, which can be clinically, radiologically and histologically mistaken for real bone tumors. This article presents the aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), solitary bone cyst (SBC), fibrous dysplasia, osteofibrous dysplasia Campanacci and non-ossifying fibroma (NOF). Many tumor-like bony lesions are often incidental findings. The combination of X‑ray imaging specifically supplemented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) enables a diagnostic classification in the majority of cases.

Dual-Energy CT: Basic Principles, Technical Approaches, and Applications in Musculoskeletal Imaging (Part 1).

In recent years, technological advances have allowed manufacturers to implement dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) on clinical scanners. With its unique ability to differentiate basis materials by their atomic number, DECT has opened new perspectives in imaging. DECT has been used successfully in musculoskeletal imaging with applications ranging from detection, characterization, and quantification of crystal and iron deposits; to simulation of noncalcium (improving the visualization of bone marrow lesions) or noniodine images. Furthermore, the data acquired with DECT can be postprocessed t

Value of ultrasound in rheumatologic diseases.

The use of musculoskeletal ultrasound in rheumatology clinical practice has rapidly increased over the past decade. Ultrasound has enabled rheumatologists to diagnose, prognosticate and monitor disease outcome. Although international standardization remains a concern still, the use of ultrasound in rheumatology is expected to grow further as costs fall and the opportunity to train in the technique improves. We present a review of value of ultrasound, focusing on major applications of ultrasound in rheumatologic diseases.

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

In the current paradigm for management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), obtaining clinical remission of symptoms remains the most important aim, but achieving radiographic remission is another key goal of treatment. Several parameters detectable by musculoskeletal ultrasonography can predict the development of severe RA, as well as monitor patients' responses to treatment; thus, musculoskeletal ultrasonography is widely used for evaluating patients with RA, both in clinical trials and in clinical practice. This Review describes the applications of musculoskeletal ultrasonography in

Current issues and regulations in tendon regeneration and musculoskeletal repair with mesenchymal stem cells.

Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal cells residing within the connective tissue of most organs. Their surface phenotype has been well described. Most commonly, mesenchymal stem cells demonstrate the ability to differentiate into mesenchymal tissues (bone, catailge, fat, etc...), however, under the proper conditions these cells can differentiate into epithelial cells and neuroectoderm derived lineages. Their developmental plasticity also depends on the ability of mesenchymal stem cells to alter the tissue microenvironment by secreting soluble factors, as well as their capacity for di

[Characteristics of postural corrective responses before and after long-term spaceflight].

Balance function is dramatically deteriorated after exposure to microgravity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role and the contribution of different gravity sensory systems to the development of balance impairment after long-term spaceflights. Postural perturbations (pushes to the chest) of the threshold, medium, and sub-maximal intensities were produced in eight cosmonauts before, and on the day 3, 7, and 11 following spaceflight. Postural corrective responses were analyzed by anterior-posterior body sway fluctuation and electromyographic activity of leg muscles. The c

MR imaging of pediatric trauma.

Although plain radiography remains the most important and cost-effective imaging for screening and characterizing osseous injuries, it has been well recognized that pediatric fractures can occur without radiographic abnormalities. The superb capability of MR imaging in demonstrating marrow edema, cartilage defects, and soft tissue injuries makes it an essential adjunct in the further evaluation of trauma to the growing skeleton. The key MR imaging findings of growth plate injuries, stress fractures, avulsion injuries, osteochondritis dissecans, transient patellar dislocation, and soft tissue i
