Valproic acid is a widely prescribed medication for seizure disorders, mood disorders, and migraines. The adverse effects involving nails following the use of sodium valproate are rare. The nail changes reported so far include onycholysis, onychomadesis, the roughness of the nail, brownish-yellow discoloration, and a transverse yellow band. These changes are independent of the age of the patients, dose, and duration of medication. The nail changes are reversible following the discontinuation of the medication.

BACKGROUND: Subungual melanoma can be diagnostically challenging. We evaluated the potential of PReferentially expressed Antigen for MElanoma (PRAME) immunoreactivity for differentiating benign from malignant nail melanocytic lesions.
METHODS: Sixty cases were identified (10 invasive melanomas, 8 melanomas in situ, 14 nevi, 12 cases of lentigo, and 16 of melanocytic activation). Percentage of PRAME-positive melanocytes was evaluated as follows: 0 no staining, 1+ 1%-25%, 2+ 26%-50%, 3+ 51%-75%, and 4+ >75%. A combined score of both percentage and intensity was also evaluated.

This review focuses on nail changes that do not belong to the group of benign or malignant nail tumors. These common afflictions of the nail include structural changes in and under the nail plate as well as inflammation around and in the nail bed. They include onychomycoses, nail psoriasis, onychodystrophies, subungual hematoma, paronychia, ingrown nails and pincer nails. Due to the peculiar anatomy and physiological growth conditions of the nail, the pathology does not necessarily stem from the site of the clinical problem and calls for careful inspection and interpretation.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) incidence continues to rise in the United States due to increasing opioid use disorder in pregnancy. While cutaneous excoriations have been noted in NAS, there is a paucity of literature regarding abnormal nail findings in NAS.
METHODS: A retrospective, observational case series was conducted of twelve patients with NAS and abnormal nail findings who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit between January 1, 2018, and May 1, 2020.

Bacterial and viral infections of the nail unit are very common as primary infections, especially bacterial paronychia and warts, but they can also be superinfections complicating other nail disorders. In many nail unit infections, the clinical presentation is nonspecific: in these cases, diagnostic tests are mandatory before treatment, to avoid spread of the infection and drug resistance. The most common forms of bacterial and viral infections that may affect the nail unit are herein described in detail, with diagnostic and treatment options provided.
