Reorganization of Brain Resting-state Functional Connectivity Following 14 Days of Elbow Immobilization in Young Females.

Limb immobilization is known to cause significant decreases in muscle strength and muscle mass as early as two days following the onset of immobilization. However, the decline in strength surpasses the decline in muscle mass, suggesting that factors in addition to muscle loss, such as neuroplasticity, contribute to the decrease in force production. However, little is known regarding immobilization-induced neural changes, although sensorimotor regions seem to be the most affected. The present study aimed to determine whether brain functional organization is altered following 14 days of unilater

Exploring habenular structural connectivity in Parkinson's disease: insights from 7 T MRI study.

BACKGROUND: PD is marked by both motor and non-motor symptoms, with its pathophysiology involving many neural pathways and brain regions beyond the dopaminergic system. While mainly gray matter changes have been noted, white matter changes also exist in PD. Habenula, known for its role in reward processing, mood regulation, motor functions, and cognition, is of interest due to its connection to mood disorders in PD. This study aims to explore diffusion metrics and structural connectivity changes in the habenula of newly diagnosed PD patients using 7 T MRI. METHODS: 84 PDs and 38 HCs were recr…

Separation of Channels Subserving Approach and Avoidance/Escape at the Level of the Basal Ganglia and Related Brainstem Structures.

The basal ganglia have the key function of directing our behavior in the context of events from our environment and/or our internal state. This function relies on afferents targeting the main input structures of the basal ganglia, entering bids for action selection at the level of the striatum or signals for behavioral interruption at the level of the subthalamic nucleus, with behavioral reselection facilitated by dopamine signaling. Numerous experiments have studied action selection in relation to inputs from the cerebral cortex. However, less is known about the anatomical and functional link

Exploring functional connectivity in large-scale brain networks in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review of EEG and fMRI studies.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition that is difficult to treat due to our limited understanding of its pathophysiology. Functional connectivity in brain networks, as evaluated through neuroimaging studies, plays a pivotal role in understanding OCD. While both electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have been extensively employed in OCD research, few have fully synthesized their findings. To bridge this gap, we reviewed 166 studies (10 EEG, 156 fMRI) published up to December 2023. In EEG studies, OCD exhibited lower c

Electrophysiological correlates of divergent projections in the avian superior olivary nucleus.

The physiological diversity of inhibitory neurons provides ample opportunity to influence a wide range of computational roles through their varied activity patterns, especially via feedback loops. In the avian auditory brain stem, inhibition originates primarily from the superior olivary nucleus (SON), and so it is critical to understand the intrinsic physiological properties and processing capabilities of these neurons. Neurons in the SON receive ascending input via the cochlear nuclei: directly from the intensity-coding cochlear nucleus angularis (NA) and indirectly via the interaural timing

Differences in the expression of cortex-wide neural dynamics are related to behavioral phenotype.

Behavior differs across individuals, ranging from typical to atypical phenotypes.1 Understanding how differences in behavior relate to differences in neural activity is critical for developing treatments of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. One hypothesis is that differences in behavior reflect individual differences in the dynamics of how information flows through the brain. In support of this, the correlation of neural activity between brain areas, termed "functional connectivity," varies across individuals2 and is disrupted in autism,3 schizophrenia,4 and depression.5 Howev

Assessing the impact of infantile hydrocephalus on visuomotor integration through behavioural and neuroimaging studies.

Infantile hydrocephalus considerably impacts neurodevelopment, warranting attention to potential long-term consequences on visuomotor functions. The current study investigated the impact of infantile hydrocephalus on functional connectivity within the posterior cortex. Fourteen patients, who were treated for infantile hydrocephalus, were matched for age and sex with 14 typically-developing controls. Both groups had a mean age of 9 years old. Resting-state functional MRI was used to conduct a functional connectivity analysis within the visuomotor integration network, including the inferior fron

Sex-specific resting state brain network dynamics in patients with major depressive disorder.

Sex-specific neurobiological changes have been implicated in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Dysfunctions of the default mode network (DMN), salience network (SN) and frontoparietal network (FPN) are critical neural characteristics of MDD, however, the potential moderating role of sex on resting-state network dynamics in MDD has not been sufficiently evaluated. Thus, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected from 138 unmedicated patients with first-episode MDD (55 males) and 243 healthy controls (HCs; 106 males). Recurring functional network co-activation

Prefrontal functional connectivities in autism spectrum disorders: A connectopathic disorder affecting movement, interoception, and cognition.

The prefrontal cortex is included in a neuronal system that includes the basal ganglia, the thalamus, and the cerebellum. Most of the higher and more complex motor, cognitive, and emotional behavioral functions are thought to be found primarily in the frontal lobes. Insufficient connectivity between the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and other regions of the brain that are distant from each other involved in top-down information processing rely on the global integration of data from multiple input sources and enhance low level perception processes (bottom-up information processing). The reduc

Functional connectivity of cortical-cerebellar networks in relation to sensorimotor behavior and clinical features in autism spectrum disorder.

Sensorimotor issues are present in the majority of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are associated with core symptoms. The neural systems associated with these impairments remain unclear. Using a visually guided precision gripping task during functional magnetic resonance imaging, we characterized task-based connectivity and activation of cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar visuomotor networks. Participants with ASD (n = 19; ages 10-33) and age- and sex-matched neurotypical controls (n = 18) completed a visuomotor task at low and high force levels. Relative to controls, in

Thalamo-cortical and cerebello-cortical functional connectivity in development.

The thalamus is a critical relay center for neural pathways involving sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, including cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical and cortico-ponto-cerebello-thalamo-cortical loops. Despite the importance of these circuits, their development has been understudied. One way to investigate these pathways in human development in vivo is with functional connectivity MRI, yet few studies have examined thalamo-cortical and cerebello-cortical functional connectivity in development. Here, we used resting-state functional connectivity to measure functional connectivity in the tha…

Resting-state functional connectivity-based parcellation of the human dentate nucleus: new findings and clinical relevance.

For years, the cerebellum was left out of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies due to technological limitations. The advent of novel data acquisition and reconstruction strategies (e.g., whole-brain simultaneous multi-slice imaging) employing multi-channel array coils has overcome such limitations, ushering unprecedented improvements in temporal signal-to-noise ratio and spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we aim to provide a brief report on the deep cerebellar nuclei, specifically focusing on the dentate nuclei, the primary output nuclei, situated within both cognitive and motor

Cerebellar Nuclei Receiving Orofacial Proprioceptive Signals through the Mossy Fiber Pathway from the Supratrigeminal Nucleus in Rats.

Proprioception from muscle spindles is necessary for motor function executed by the cerebellum. In particular, cerebellar nuclear neurons that receive proprioceptive signals and send projections to the lower brainstem or spinal cord play key roles in motor control. However, little is known about which cerebellar nuclear regions receive orofacial proprioception. Here, we investigated projections to the cerebellar nuclei from the supratrigeminal nucleus (Su5), which conveys the orofacial proprioception arising from jaw-closing muscle spindles (JCMSs). Injections of an anterograde tracer into the

How Does Aging Affect Whole-brain Functional Network Connectivity? Evidence from An ICA Method.

Many studies have shown that changes in the functional connectivity are diverse along with aging. However, few studies have addressed how aging affects connectivity among large-scale brain networks, and it is challenging to examine gradual aging trajectories from middle adulthood to old age. In this work, based on large-sample fMRI data from 6300 subjects aged between 49 to 73 years, we apply an independent component analysis-based method called NeuroMark to extract brain functional networks and their connectivity (i.e., functional network connectivity (FNC)), and then propose a two-level stat

Joint-embeddings reveal functional differences in default-mode network architecture between marmosets and humans.

The default-mode network (DMN) is a distributed functional brain system integral for social and higher-order cognition in humans with implications in a myriad of neuropsychological disorders. In this study, we compared the functional architecture of the DMN between humans and marmosets to assess their similarities and differences using joint gradients. This approach permits simultaneous large-scale mapping of functional systems across the cortex of humans and marmosets, revealing evidence of putative homologies between them. In doing so, we find that the DMN architecture of the marmoset exhibi

Frontal Aslant Tract and Its Role in Language: A Journey Through Tractographies and Dissections.

BACKGROUND: The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is a bilateral tract located within each frontal lobe. It connects the supplementary motor area in the superior frontal gyrus with the pars opercularis in the inferior frontal gyrus. There is a new and broader conceptualization of this tract called the extended FAT (eFAT). The eFAT tract role is believed to be related to several brain functions, including verbal fluency as one of its main domains. METHODS: Tractographies were performed by using DSI Studio software on a template of 1065 healthy human brains. The tract was observed in a three-dimension

Neural substrates for dissociation of cognition inhibition in autogenous- and reactive-type obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The taxonomy of autogenous- and reactive-type obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (AO vs. RO) is one of the most valid subtyping approaches to the heterogeneity of OCD. The present study aimed to seek evidence of neural substrates supporting the dissociation of cognition inhibition in AO and RO which was revealed by our previous behavioral and electrophysiological work. METHODS: A total of 165 patients with OCD (86 AO versus 79 RO), and 79 healthy controls (HC) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. Within-network connectivity, node strength, and edge

Abnormal brain network community structure related to psychological stress in schizophrenia.

Recent functional imaging studies in schizophrenia consistently report a disruption of brain connectivity. However, most of these studies analyze the brain connectivity during resting state. Since psychological stress is a major factor for the emergence of psychotic symptoms, we sought to characterize the brain connectivity reconfiguration induced by stress in schizophrenia. We tested the hypothesis that an alteration of the brain's integration-segregation dynamic could be the result of patients with schizophrenia facing psychological stress. To this end, we studied the modular organization an

Abnormal functional connectivity of the reward network is associated with social communication impairments in autism spectrum disorder: A large-scale multi-site resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The social motivation hypothesis proposes that the social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to reward system dysfunction. However, functional connectivity (FC) patterns of the reward network in ASD have not been systematically explored yet. METHODS: The reward network was defined as eight regions of interest (ROIs) per hemisphere, including the nucleus accumbens (NAc), caudate, putamen, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), amygdala, and insula. We computed both the ROI-wise resting-state FC and se

The functional connectome in obsessive-compulsive disorder: resting-state mega-analysis and machine learning classification for the ENIGMA-OCD consortium.

Current knowledge about functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is based on small-scale studies, limiting the generalizability of results. Moreover, the majority of studies have focused only on predefined regions or functional networks rather than connectivity throughout the entire brain. Here, we investigated differences in resting-state functional connectivity between OCD patients and healthy controls (HC) using mega-analysis of data from 1024 OCD patients and 1028 HC from 28 independent samples of the ENIGMA-OCD consortium. We assessed group differences in whole-brain
