Cellular blue nevus tumor presenting as a submandibular lymph node in a 16-year-old.

The cellular blue nevus tumor is a type of dendritic melanocytic nevus that is typically benign and exceedingly rare. The incidence of all blue nevi is about 1%, usually affecting the adult population and appearing on the extremities, sacrococcygeal or gluteal regions. There have only been a handful of case reports cited in the literature where cellular blue nevi present in the head and neck region, usually affecting the scalp and young adult population (7, 8). As such, it is exceedingly rare to encounter a cellular blue nevus tumor in the neck or infiltrating into neck lymph nodes. Here we re…

Malignant melanoma in a child with giant congenital melanocytic nevus and satellite flekers: A rare entity.

Malignant melanomas in the pediatric age are remarkably rare representing 0.9% of various pediatric malignancies. Congenital nevi occur in 1 in 100 newborns, whereas giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) measuring more than 20 cm is seen in 1 in 20 000 cases. Very few cases of malignant melanoma arising from GCMN have been described in English literature. The risk of developing malignant melanoma from GCMN is believed to be directly proportional to the size of the nevus and varies from 2.6% to 20% depending on the size of nevus. We present a case of malignant melanoma in a 12-year-old fema…

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome in a Malay girl: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome (BRBNS) also known as Bean's Syndrome is an atypical type of vascular malformation. To date, around 200 cases have been reported world-wide. In view of its low incidence rate, clinicians might misdiagnose and under treat. The key features of this syndrome are characterized by multiple cutaneous, soft tissue and gastrointestinal tract venous malformations. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the first case of Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome in Malaysia, a 23 years old Malay girl who suffers from multiple cutaneous venous malformation and gastrointestin…

Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome with the complication of intussusception: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is an extremely rare disorder characterized by multifocal venous malformations involving various organs such as the skin and gastrointestinal tract. Severe complications of BRBNS, such as intussusception, volvulus, and intestinal infarction are rarer and require surgery. This report describes a 33-year-old male of BRBNS complicated with intussusception that was successfully diagnosed and treated with surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 33-year-old Chinese man presented with persistent, colicky pain accompanied by nausea, abdominal distension, and di…

Woolly Hair Nevus with Trichotillomania in a 9-Year-Old Boy: A Rare Case Association.

Woolly hair nevus is a rare entity characterized by structural anomaly, which presents as curly hair in a circumscribed area of scalp, in a nonNegroid individual. These are abnormal hairs which are short, thin, and sparse. The term "woolly hair" refers to tightly coiled hair covering the whole scalp or part of it and has a hereditary character. Trichotillomania is a chronic impulse control disorder, characterized by the repetitive pulling out of one's own hair, leading to noticeable hair loss. Here, we present the case of a 9-year-old male child with woolly hair nevus over the occipital area, …

Clinicopathological Analysis of Acquired Melanocytic Nevi and a Preliminary Study on the Possible Origin of Nevus Cells.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN) is still unclear, and the origin of nevus cells has not been clarified. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical features and pathological types of AMN and identify the possible origin of nevus cells. METHODS: A retrospective study of 2929 cases of AMN was conducted, and 96 specimens of intradermal and junctional nevi were selected. Immunohistochemical assays were performed to detect the expression of basement membrane component receptor DDR-1 and the molecular markers on epidermal melanocytes, dermal stem cells (DSCs), and hair folli…

Multidisciplinary Approach for Treating Malocclusion of Patient With Basal Cell Nevus Syndrome: A Case Report.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare genetic disorder that can be caused by mutation of multiple genes, including PTCH1, PTCH2, and SUFU, in an autosomal dominant manner. The symptoms include some craniofacial features such as keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs), macrocephaly, and cleft lip and/or palate. Although comprehensive orthodontic treatment is frequently required for some of these craniofacial deformities, there are few reports that show the outcomes of comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Here, we report a case of BCNS with multiple KCOTs, macrocephaly, skeletal class III m…

Speckled lentiginous nevus: A rare presentation associated with motor neuropathy and muscular atrophy in a child.

Speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome has been described in individuals with a speckled lentiginous nevus with rare associated neurologic deficits. Because speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome almost always affects adults, it is not typically considered when evaluating children. We present the first reported case of speckled lentiginous nevus syndrome presenting in a young child with muscle atrophy and motor deficits affecting muscles along the same distribution as the speckled lentiginous nevus.

Bilateral hyperkeratosis of the nipples and areolae with linear nevus: a rare case report and review of the literature.

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is an uncommon dermatosis without well-defined etiology, which occurs mostly in young women and may only be a cosmetic problem. In 1938, Levy-Frankel classified this disease into three variants; type I involves hyperkeratosis with an epidermal nevus, and has rarely been reported. We report a case of a 23-year-old woman with long-term bilateral pigmentation and thickening of the nipples and areolae, accompanied with dark brown, flat lesions with a linear distribution on her left forearm. The verrucous plaques were asymptomatic and could be scratched off b…

Role of amniotic membrane and full-thickness skin graft in reconstruction of kissing nevus of eyelids.

A 20-year-old girl presented with a large pigmented lesion over the temporal aspect of left lateral canthus involving the lateral one-third of both eyelids, since birth. A slow increase in its size had been noticed for the past 2 years. On examination, a hairy nevus measuring 34 mm × 22 mm was noticed involving left eyelid skin, the mucocutaneous junction (MCJ), palpebral conjunctiva, and lateral canthus. The surface was irregularly thick and covered with long, thick, and pigmented hairs. A clinical diagnosis of kissing nevus of eyelids was kept and a surgical resection with reconstruction pla…

Anemia Due to Inflammation in an Anti-Coagulated Patient with Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare disease characterized by vascular malformations mostly involving skin and gastrointestinal tract. This disease is often associated with sideropenic anemia and occult bleeding. METHODS: We report the case of chronic severe anemia in an old patient under oral anticoagulation treatment for chronic atrial fibrillation. RESULTS: At admission, the patient also presented fever and increased laboratory parameters of systemic inflammation (ferritin 308 mcg/L, C-reactive protein (CRP) 244 mg/L). A small bluish-colored lesion over the left e…

Rapidly growing pigmented tumor on a scalp nevus sebaceous of a pediatric patient: Observation or excision.

A 14-year-old girl presented with a new, rapidly growing, pigmented tumor on a previously existing yellowish, verrucous plaque on the scalp. The patient received complete surgical excision. Routine histology ruled out basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and the histological diagnosis was pigmented trichoblastoma arising in nevus sebaceous (NS). It is important to define management for new lesions developing in pediatric patients with existing nevus sebaceus.

Cerebral hemihypoplasia and nevus flammeus in a child with oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndrome type III.

Oromandibular limb hypogenesis syndrome (OMLH; OMIM 103300) encompasses a group of uncommon disorders characterized by malformations in the mouth, jaw and limbs. It has been associated with various entities such as gastroschisis, pulmonary hypoplasia, intestinal atresia, renal agenesis, hydrocephalus and other syndromes. We describe a boy of Mexican origin with features of OMLH. In addition, brain magnetic resonance imaging shows cerebral hemiatrophy and hemihypoplasia and an ipsilateral arachnoid cyst, as well as microcephaly and frontal nevus flammeus were observed. This association, to the …

Clinicopathological characteristics and surgical outcomes of divided nevus of the eyelids: a decade's experience on 73 cases.

Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive data regarding clinicopathologic characteristics and surgical treatment of divided nevus of the eyelids. Here clinicopathologic features and reconstructive procedures performed on 73 patients were described. We showed that the lesion was randomly located on both eyes with a predominant incidence in females. Affected regions included the following: eyelid only (n = 40, 54.8%); medial canthus involvement (n = 4, 5.5%); medial canthus, caruncle, and bulbar conjunctiva involvement (n = 5, 6.8%); lateral canthus involvement (n = 18, 24.7%); full eyelids (…
