The Application of the Nurse-Led Sedation and Analgesia Management in ICU after Heart Surgeries.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

AIM: Traditional sedation management consists of doctors adjusting the dosage of sedative drugs or adding other drugs in combination according to the evaluation of nurses; the nurses then execute the orders. The nurses' passive execution in the process is not the ideal model for continuous evaluation and observation of sedation. This study aims to investigate the application and effects of nurse-provided procedural sedation and analgesia for patients in intensive care unit. METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 354 heart surgery patients who received procedural sedation and analgesia f

Is meconium screening appropriate for universal use? Science and ethics say no.

Researchers have been actively looking to biomarker development as a way to improve diagnosis in conditions such as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) that have typically been difficult to identify at an early stage. Meconium testing is considered a potentially useful newborn screening method. Screening for alcohol (and other drug) use is unique from all other types of newborn screening in that there is a greater element of social risk for parents, particularly mothers (public exposure of substance use with potential for child welfare involvement). There are many factors related to the science and e

Louisiana neurosurgeons and the organ procurement shortage: a comparative analysis of perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values.

The supply of transplantable organs continues to fall behind demand. Knowledge of the perceptions, attitudes, and ethical values held by health care workers involved in the process is critical. This is particularly true of neurosurgeons because of their pivotal role in the procurement process. Survey data are used to compare neurosurgeons (n = 59) with emergency physicians (n = 125), critical care nurses (n = 267), and other physicians (n = 445). Analysis revealed that attitudes among those health care workers regularly involved with organ procurement and transplantation--neurosurgeons, emerge

How are nurses' individual and their colleagues' diversity factors associated with their cooperation behaviors in teams? - Results of an online factorial survey.

BACKGROUND: Diversity within nursing teams in Germany increases due to staff shortages, nurse migration and the current academization of the profession. Little is known about how nurse’s own diversity factors and those of team members impact nurse’s perception and behavior in team situations. This study examines if and how nurses differentiate in the assessment of their colleagues’ nursing abilities in basic care, i.e. patient’s personal hygiene and treatment care, i.e. the set-up of an infusion, as well as their willingness to swap shifts with colleagues. METHODS: A quasi-experimental, cross-

Expert by experience involvement in mental health nursing education: The co-production of standards between Experts by Experience and academics in mental health nursing.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT: Expert by Experience (EBE) involvement in mental health nursing education has demonstrated benefits, including enhancing understanding of holistic and recovery-focused practice and enhanced application of interpersonal skills. Structure and support for EBE involvement is lacking; often resulting in inadequate preparation and debriefing and tokenistic involvement. Service user involvement in mental health nursing education should be underpinned by lived experience perspectives. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE: An exploration of EBE involvement in nursing

The Relationship between Social Support and Secondary Posttraumatic Growth among Health Care Providers Working with Trauma Victims-The Mediating Role of Cognitive Processing.

BACKGROUND: Individuals, who help trauma victims as part of their professional responsibilities, may experience positive effects of their work, occurring in the form of Secondary Posttraumatic Growth (SPTG). Its determinants include environmental factors such as social support, and individual characteristics, particularly cognitive processing of the trauma. The purpose of this study was to determine the associations between SPTG and social support and cognitive processing of trauma, also considered as a mediator, in a group of medical personnel exposed to secondary trauma. METHODS: The result

Nurse-driven protocols for febrile pediatric oncology patients.

INTRODUCTION: Infection is a frequent complication experienced by many children with cancer, with potentially life-threatening consequences that may result in hospitalization, prolonged length of stay, and increased mortality. The need for prompt assessment and early intervention for infection is widely recognized by ED staff as best practice; however, the average length of time to antibiotic administration varies widely in published studies. METHODS: An interdisciplinary quality improvement initiative including physician, nursing, and pharmacy leaders was created to streamline the identifica

Cooperation of hearing-impaired elderly subjects for participation in a hearing screening program.

Presbyacusis, the auditory disorder which accompanies the aging process, is well known. However, the practical assistance available to alleviate the breakdown in the communication ability of the older person is unsatisfactory, and provision for public awareness of a rehabilitation strategy has not yet been established in many countries. Four hundred and ninety-eight elderly subjects, aged 65-94 years, were hearing tested in different setups, a geriatric nursing home and in the community. It was found that the need for rehabilitation was high and the willingness to participate in a hearing scre

Conceptual Scaffold Analysis Using Mature Lay Concepts when Constructing Qualitative Theory.

An important part of a qualitative project is the proposal preparation required for ethics review and funding application, yet proposals are relatively undeveloped at the beginning of a qualitative study. Here we describe a new method, Conceptual Scaffold Analysis, for applying a relevant, mature lay concept (from the literature) as a focus within a research proposal. This method enables analyzing and integrating a concept into your proposed methods, expedites inquiry, provides an organizing framework, and reconstructs understanding. We present a selection of mature concepts pertinent to nursi

Accreditation: The other faculty role.

Accreditation is fundamental to nursing program quality, graduate/completer eligibility for licensure and certification, and admission to graduate study. Traditionally, faculty expectations have been organized around three pillars: teaching, scholarship, and service/practice. Although these categories remain essential, they no longer fully capture the scope of contemporary faculty responsibilities. This article proposes that accreditation activities constitute a fourth cornerstone of the faculty role, integral rather than supplementary to academic work. Nurse practitioner faculty often transit

Effect of Disability-Specific Education on Student Attitudes Toward People With Disabilities.

Attitude is a multidimensional and complex notion that considerably empowers or limits the major life activities of humans. Health professionals' attitudes toward people with disabilities are significant factors in the rehabilitation process. Soon after completing their coursework, the final-year students from health science meet the patients and rehabilitate them. This study accordingly aims to assess the attitude toward disability among final-year health science students before and after administering a disability-specific structured teaching program. A total of 243 final-year undergraduate

A dimensional analysis of inner strength in people ageing with serious illness.

Nursing models of care show promise in addressing the needs of older adults facing serious illness through supporting inner strength. However, previous conceptual and theoretical models of inner strength are limited. This concept analysis used dimensional analysis methods to explore inner strength in people ageing with serious illness to address limitations by defining a pragmatic, data-driven model. This study analyzed published literature of adults with serious illness that describes inner strength. Thirty articles were selected after review. The result was an explanatory matrix that describ

Circumstances leading to placement: a difficult caregiving decision.

Due to advances made in medicine and healthcare, older adults are living longer but enduring problems with physical functioning and health over longer periods of time. In addition, the percentage of older adults with cognitive impairments is increasing. Caregiving duties, which decades ago lasted for months, now last for years. This long-term strain of caring for an older adult who is physically and/or cognitively impaired may lead many caregivers to feel frustrated, angry, overwhelmed, and isolated. As a result of this stress many caregivers resort to nursing home placement. The Caregiver Opt

Developmental arrest and pregnancy-induced transmammary transmission of Ancylostoma caninum larvae in the murine model.

Pregnancy is associated with reactivation of latent infections of many protozoal and helminthic parasites. To facilitate in vivo studies on the process of transmammary transmission of hookworm infection to nursing newborns, we established an experimental model of infection of BALB/c mice with infective larvae of the canine nematode Ancylostoma caninum. To establish latency with a significant reservoir of tissue larvae and achieve acceptable pregnancy success rates, mice were subcutaneously infected at day 5 postimpregnation; similar larval distribution profiles were observed at the end of the

Detection and management of suspected infections in people with dementia - A scoping review of current practices.

People with dementia have an increased risk of hospitalization and mortality due to infections. We aimed to explore decision-making processes and interventions for detecting and managing suspected infections in people with dementia and involved actors and determinants. We conducted a scoping review, searching CINAHL and PubMed, and synthesized data through mapping and narratively. We identified 22 studies, based mostly on nursing homes and US data. Decision-making processes included recognition of infections based on observations of early signs and symptoms, actions when suspecting infections,
