Extremely low birthweight infants: how neonatal intensive care unit teams can reduce postnatal malnutrition and prevent growth retardation.

AIM: To evaluate the impact of an improved nutritional policy for extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants on nutritional deficits and postnatal growth. METHOD: We compared two groups of 37 ELBW infants, born before and after the introduction of an improved nutritional policy in April 2006. Group A (born 2005 to early 2006) and group B (born 2009) stayed in a French neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for at least 7 weeks. Optimal energy and protein intakes were 120 and 3.5 g/kg/day, respectively, and used to calculate cumulative deficits. Delta z-scores for weight, length and head circumfere

Does steatohepatitis impair liver regeneration? A study in a dietary model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in rats.

BACKGROUND: Impaired liver regeneration is a feature of alcoholic hepatitis, but the relative importance of alcohol, nutritional imbalance and inflammatory mediators in causing this effect is unclear. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a form of liver disease with similar morphology to alcoholic hepatitis, but the effect of this disorder on liver regeneration is unclear. We, therefore, examined the status of liver regeneration in a rat nutritional model of hepatic steatosis with inflammation, which is morphologically identical to NASH in humans. METHODS: Male Wistar rats received a methi

Anorexia and bulimia.

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders with distinct clinical presentations. Reduced caloric intake, a hallmark of both disorders, is manifested by self-induced starvation in anorexia and by binge eating and gastrointestinal purging in bulimia. Treatment includes nutritional intervention, psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy in either the ambulatory or the hospital setting.

Novel complementary strategies for the management of consistent gastrointestinal symptoms of Celiac disease.

Celiac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the small intestine triggered by gluten consumption in genetically predisposed individuals. While a strict lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) is the primary management strategy, adherence to GFD is challenging due to the ubiquity of gluten, risks of cross-contamination, and inferior nutrition. Additionally, many patients experience persistent gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms despite strict GFD compliance. Functional foods and nutraceuticals, known for their health benefits beyond basic nutrition, have shown potential in alleviating CD-related

Head and neck cancer patients treated with concomitant chemoradiotherapy involving the oral cavity and oropharynx: is another choice possible than prophylactic gastrostomy?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent recommendations on cachexia highlight, in head and neck cancers, the heterogeneity of studies, focusing on weight loss and sequelae including swallowing disorders. The current national guidelines emphasize that, in cases of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) involving the oral cavity and oropharynx, prophylactic gastrostomy placement should be carried out systematically. We review why this technique is particularly relevant in this specific location for the feasibility of cCRT. RECENT FINDINGS: A randomized trial is underway on swallowing disorders and the quality o

Vegan Diet in Dermatology: A Review.

Diet is known to play a role in the development of skin disorders. While a vegan diet is frequently described as a risk factor for skin disease secondary to nutritional deficiency, this risk may be overestimated. This review aims to debunk myths and provide information on skin disorders and inflammatory skin conditions that have associations with specific nutritional deficiencies in the context of a vegan diet. A literature search was performed for each nutrient and inflammatory skin disease using the PubMed/MEDLINE database and public health website pages concerning a vegan diet. The literatu

Gaining stakeholder perspectives to shape a produce prescription program to improve maternal and birth outcomes: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Nutrition during pregnancy significantly impacts maternal and birth outcomes. A key factor contributing to the rise in adverse maternal and birth outcomes is poor nutrition. Produce prescription programs have the potential to address pregnancy-related adverse outcomes such as hypertensive disorders and gestational diabetes, but scientific evidence is limited. PURPOSE: To conduct qualitative interviews to gain an in-depth understanding of how, why, and in what context should produce prescriptions be implemented to best meet the needs of pregnant women in a clinical setting. Technology-enabled collaborative care for youth with early psychosis: A protocol for a feasibility study to improve physical health behaviours.

AIM: Individuals with psychotic disorders have poorer health outcomes and die earlier due to cardiovascular diseases when compared to healthy populations. Contributing factors include low levels of physical activity, poor nutrition and tobacco smoking. Currently, patients navigate a fragmented health-care system to seek physical and mental health services, often without access to evidence-based health promotion interventions, especially in non-academic settings or rural areas, increasing client barriers at the individual and provider level. To address these gaps, we wish to test the feasibilit

Let thy food be thy medicine….when possible.

There is no evidence that Hippocrates, although being credited for it, ever literally stated 'let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food'. However, yet in line with Hippocrates' philosophy, we are currently witnessing a reappraisal of the complementarity of nutrition and pharmacology. Recent studies not only underline the therapeutic potential of lifestyle interventions, but are also generating valuable insights in the complex and dynamic transition from health to disease. Next to this, nutritional biology can significantly contribute to the discovery of new molecular targets. I

Dietary and metabolic reprogramming alleviates neurodegeneration: a review of mechanisms and clinical implications.

Neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by their insidious onset and progressive neuronal degeneration, present significant challenges in the fields of neuroscience and medicine. We elucidate the critical role of nutrition and cellular metabolism in the pathogenesis and progression of these disorders, with a particular focus on Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD). We demonstrate that fundamental nutrients such as glucose, lipids, and amino acids are crucial for neuronal bioenergetics, oxidative stress mitigation, and neuroprotective functions. Fu

The nutrition-sleep-circadian axis in age-related neurodegeneration: Cellular mechanisms, metabolic dysfunction, and neuroprotective interventions.

Advanced age is accompanied by progressive metabolic, nutritional, mitochondrial, and neuroimmune dysregulation, which may increase susceptibility to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), highlighting the need to identify modifiable mechanisms that influence disease initiation and progression. Increasing evidence indicates that nutrition, sleep, and circadian rhythms function as an interconnected biological network regulating metabolic homeostasis, mitochondrial function, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, proteostasis, and neuronal resili

Anthropometric measurement standardization for a multicenter nutrition survey in children with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disease associated with nutritional status derangement and altered body composition. New drugs are changing the natural history of the disease, so now more than ever is important to focus on the correct assessment of nutritional status in SMA. We implemented a standardization process for the anthropometric measurement as part of our ongoing longitudinal study of growth patterns in SMA patients. It features a procedural manual, included in this communication, observers training and reliability assessment, of which we publish the values obtained i
