Health effects of exposure to indoor volatile organic compounds from 1980 to 2017: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) indoors is thought to be associated with several adverse health effects. However, we still lack concentration-response (C-R) relationships between VOC levels in civil buildings and various health outcomes. For this paper, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies to summarize related associations and C-R relationships. Four databases were searched to collect all relevant studies published between January 1980 and December 2017. A total of 39 studies were identified in the systematic review, and 32 of these were inc

Protocol for an observational study investigating hormones triggering the onset of sustained lactation: the INSIGHT study.

INTRODUCTION: Lactation is a hormonally controlled process that promotes infant growth and neurodevelopment and reduces the long-term maternal risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. Hormones, such as prolactin and progesterone, mediate mammary development during pregnancy and are critical for initiating copious milk secretion within 24-72 hours post partum. However, the hormone concentrations mediating lactation onset are ill defined. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The primary objective of the investigating hormones triggering the onset of sustained lactation study is to establish

Post-COVID-19 HSV encephalitis: a review.

BACKGROUND: Herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) is one of the most common infectious causes of sporadic encephalitis. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has been associated with immune dysregulation of the host that might increase the risk of infections like HSVE following SARS-CoV-2 infection. There is paucity of literature on post COVID-19 HSVE. This study was conducted with the aim of analyzing the clinical presentation, brain imaging, and outcome of patients presenting with HSVE within 6 weeks of COVID-19 and providing a comprehensive review on the possible mechanisms of post-COVID-19 HSV

Relationship between trajectories of post-stroke disability and self-rated health (NeuroAdapt): protocol for a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the leading neurological cause of adult long-term disability in Europe. Even though functional consequences directly related to neurological impairment are well studied, post-stroke trajectories of functional health according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health are poorly understood. Particularly, no study investigated the relationship between post-stroke trajectories of activities of daily living (ADL) and self-rated health (SRH). However, such knowledge is of major importance to identify patients at risk of unfavourable courses. T

Saving time saves lives! A time focused evaluation of a single-view echocardiographic screening protocol for subclinical rheumatic heart disease.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease affects 33 million people in low and middle income countries and is the leading cause of cardiovascular death among children and young adults. Evidence increasingly supports that simplified screening protocols can identify at risk children with good accuracy. One of the more proximal and pragmatic hurdles that has not been completely explored is the time required for executing the screening exam. METHODS: We conducted an observational study comparing three different echocardiographic strategies in four separate school-based screening programs in Kenya and C

Association of puberty timing with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging studies have investigated the association between puberty timing, particularly age at menarche (AAM), and type 2 diabetes. However, whether this association is independent of adiposity is unclear. We aimed to systematically review published evidence on the association between puberty timing and type 2 diabetes (T2D) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), with and without adjustment for adiposity, and to estimate the potential contribution of puberty timing to the burden of T2D in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS AND FINDINGS: We searched PubMed, Medline, and Embase database

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Postlicensure Observational Studies on Human Papillomavirus Vaccination and Autoimmune and Other Rare Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: Because of the limited number of subjects in prelicensure studies, autoimmune diseases and other rare adverse effects of vaccines may go undetected. Since 2006, millions of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine doses have been distributed and a considerable amount of postlicensure safety data has been generated. The objective of this study was to review available HPV postlicensure safety studies and to summarize risk estimates of autoimmune and other rare diseases. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched literature databases to identify any postlicensure sa

Bedside hyperspectral imaging for the evaluation of microcirculatory alterations in perioperative intensive care medicine: a study protocol for an observational clinical pilot study (HySpI-ICU).

INTRODUCTION: Normalisation of macrocirculatory parameters during resuscitation therapy does not guarantee the restoration of microcirculatory perfusion in critical illness due to haemodynamic incoherence. Persistent microcirculatory abnormalities are associated with severity of organ dysfunction and mandate the development of bedside microcirculatory monitoring. A novel hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system can visualise changes in skin perfusion, oxygenation and water content at the bedside. We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of HSI for bedside monitoring of skin microcirculation and the asso

Risk of congenital malformations in offspring of women using β-blockers during early pregnancy: An updated meta-analysis of observational studies.

AIMS: Beta-blockers are commonly used to treat hypertension that arises during pregnancy. However, reproductive safety concerns have been expressed. Here, we investigated whether the use of β-blockers during early pregnancy increased the risk of congenital malformations. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies published from database inception until February 2020. Observational studies evaluating associations between maternal β-blocker use and congenital malformations were included in this meta-analysis. Two rev

CGRP and Painful Pathologies Other than Headache.

CGRP has long been suspected as a mediator of arthritis pain, although evidence that CGRP directly mediates human musculoskeletal pain remains circumstantial. This chapter describes in depth the evidence surrounding CGRP's association with pain in musculoskeletal disorders and also summarises evidence for CGRP being a direct cause of pain in other conditions. CGRP-immunoreactive nerves are present in musculoskeletal tissues, and CGRP expression is altered in musculoskeletal pain. CGRP modulates musculoskeletal pain through actions both in the periphery and central nervous system. Human observa
