The etiology and pathogenesis of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis remains unknown; however, research using new techniques is revealing information on the roles of immunogenetics, cellular immunity, and humoral immunity in these disorders. Interest continues in infection as a potential trigger of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, as reactivity to infectious agents in synovial lymphocytes is sought. Reactivity to heat-shock proteins suggests a pathogenetic role for this class of proteins as well. Careful analysis of outcome in children with systemic-onset juvenile rheumatoid arthritis has identified c

Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a major pathogen causing reproductive disorders in sows and remains widely prevalent worldwide. In recent years, PPV has undergone rapid mutations and frequently co-infects with other pathogens, making vaccination the most effective preventive measure. Our previous study showed that co-expression of the chaperone protein Tf16 and VP2 in prokaryotic cells could produce highly immunogenic PPV virus-like particles (VLPs). However, whether these VLP vaccines can induce durable immune memory through sustained antibody recall responses has not been fully elucidated. In th

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1), first identified in human nasopharyngeal specimens in 2005, is a relatively recent member of the respiratory virus family and is primarily associated with respiratory tract infections. Despite this, the mechanisms underlying HBoV1 pathogenesis remain poorly understood, primarily due to the lack of suitable cell lines and animal models, as well as the complicating factor of co-infections with other pathogens. In this study, we demonstrate that the non-structural protein 1 (NP1) of HBoV1 antagonizes the type I interferon (IFN-I) signaling pathway. NP1 interacts with th

The diversity and evolution of the genomes of human bocavirus (HBoV), which causes respiratory diseases, have been scarcely studied. Here, we aimed to obtain and characterize HBoV genomes from patients's nasopharyngeal samples collected between 2017 and 2022 period (5 years and 7 months). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) used Illumina technology after having implemented using GEMI an in-house multiplex PCR amplification strategy. Genomes were assembled and analyzed with CLC Genomics, Mafft, BioEdit, MeV, Nextclade, MEGA, and iTol. A total of 213 genomes were obtained. Phylogeny classified them

Acute parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection in immunocompromised patients may lead to severe anemia. However, in adult transplant recipients, B19V reactivations without anemia and low-level viremia are common. The impact of B19V in pediatric transplant patients, with high risk of primary infection, is investigated here. In a six-month period, 159 blood samples of 54 pediatric liver transplant recipients were tested for B19V DNA by quantitative real-time PCR. Viremia was correlated with anemia and immunosuppression and compared with rates in adult transplant recipients. B19V DNA was detected in 5/54

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection during pregnancy may have serious consequences like fetal anaemia, hydrops fetalis, and fetal loss. Since epidemiological data on B19V infection are generally lacking in Sudan, the current study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of B19V in Sudanese pregnant women. Five hundred women, attending antenatal clinics in Khartoum state between November 2008 and March 2009, were enrolled and screened for B19V IgG and IgM antibodies by enzyme immunoassays. The study revealed a B19V IgG seroprevalence of 61·4%, with one subject positive for IgM. B19V DNA was not detec

INTRODUCTION: Microbial burden involving parvovirus B19 infection has been recognised as a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients. Given the recent reports of parvovirus B19 infection in Nigeria and the role of inflammation in sickle cell crisis, knowledge of the relationship between the two may be essential for deploying appropriate interventions in infected patients. This study determined the serum levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and C-reactive protein (CRP) as inflammatory markers in Nigerian SCA patients with and without parvovirus B19 i

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) has been identified as one of the etiological agents of wheezing in young children with acute respiratory-tract infections. In this study, we have obtained the sequence of a full-length HBoV1 genome (including both termini) using viral DNA extracted from a nasopharyngeal aspirate of an infected patient, cloned the full-length HBoV1 genome, and demonstrated DNA replication, encapsidation of the ssDNA genome, and release of the HBoV1 virions from human embryonic kidney 293 cells. The HBoV1 virions generated from this cell line-based production system exhibits a typical

The aim of this study was to assess the association of acute arthropathy and selected clinical features in patients with acute rash diseases. Serum samples from 1,554 patients were tested for anti-measles, dengue, human parvovirus B19, and rubella virus IgM using enzyme immunoassay. Sera from children, in whom these infections were excluded, were studied for anti-human herpesvirus type 6 IgG antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence test. Joint complaints occurred in 31.2% of the 862 patients with an etiologic diagnosis and were more frequently seen in adults than in children (OR 8.5). A

Here we report two cases of first-trimester parvovirus B19 (PV-B19) infection that were successfully treated by intrauterine blood transfusion into the umbilical vein. At 13 weeks' gestation both fetuses presented with increased nuchal translucency (NT) and cardiomegaly. In both cases pulsed Doppler ultrasound examination of the fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) revealed increased peak systolic velocity (PSV), which led to a suspicion of fetal anemia. Maternal PV infection was confirmed by a positive polymerase chain reaction result. Each fetus received a 3-mL intravenous transfusion of packe

Tonsillectomy is a commonly performed surgery in otolaryngological practice. Owing to the possibility of postoperative bleeding, it is considered as one of the major surgical procedures. Various techniques have been advocated, however dissection and electrocautery are the most commonly used techniques in tonsillectomy. The objective was to study and compare the relative efficacy using two methods of tonsillectomy- bipolar electrocautery versus silk ligation. This prospective study included 50 patients who underwent tonsillectomy. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. In Group A, left

BACKGROUND: Many reports document the transmission of human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection by clotting factor concentrates manufactured from large plasma pools. Transmission via other blood components originating from a single donor or a small number of donors, however, seems to occur only rarely. The study reported here identifies a B19 infection that was transmitted via a platelet donation.
CASE REPORT: A multiply transfused allogeneic bone marrow transplant patient developed chronic anemia due to persistent B19 infection. The anemia responded to therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin. It

Two day-old athymic (rnu/rnu) and euthymic (rnu/+) rat pups nursing immune or non-immune dams were inoculated oronasally with the Yale strain of rat virus (RV-Y). All athymic and euthymic pups (57/57) from immune dams remained clinically normal, whereas 51 of 66 athymic and euthymic pups from non-immune dams died within 30 days. Infectious RV was detected by explant culture in 12 of 15 surviving pups of both genotypes from non-immune dams 30 days after inoculation, but in none of the 57 surviving pups from immune dams. RV-Y DNA was detected by Southern blotting in kidneys of surviving athymic

The aim of this study was to describe the mutational characteristics in Korean hereditary spherocytosis (HS) patients. Relevant literatures including genetically confirmed cases with well-documented clinical summaries and relevant information were also reviewed to investigate the mutational gene- or domain-specific laboratory and clinical association. Twenty-five HS patients carried one heterozygous mutation of ANK1 (n = 13) or SPTB (n = 12) but not in SPTA1, SLC4A1, or EPB42. Deleterious mutations including frameshift, nonsense, and splice site mutations were identified in 91% (21/23), and no

Knowledge of the determinants of infectious disease transmission is a public health priority as it allows the design of optimal control strategies for endemic or emerging infections. We analyse a detailed dataset on contact patterns across five European countries and use available serological profiles for varicella and parvovirus B19 infections to identify the types of contact that may be most relevant for transmission. We show that models informed by contact data fit well the observed serological profiles of both infections. We find that intimate types of contacts explain the pattern of acqui
