Three patients with benign intracranial hypertension ([BIH], or pseudotumor cerebri) had verified increased CSF pressure and unilateral papilledema. One patient had slowly progressive loss of visual acuity until unilateral optic nerve sheathotomy was performed. One patient had spontaneous venous pulsation in the unaffected eye. The diagnosis of BIH must be considered even in the absence of bilateral papilledema.

We presented a case of a 76-year-old male patient with phacolytic glaucoma and a rather atypical clinical presentation. The sudden onset of intense pain forced the patient to seek medical help and by doing so, further damage of the optic nerve was prevented and a good visual acuity was obtained following cataract surgery.

Keratoconus is characterized by the presence of corneal distortion (secondary to thinning of the apex) and either Fleischer's ring (found in 57% of patients) or Vogt's striae (found in 44% of patients). Often the only presenting symptom is decreased visual acuity. Steep keratometric readings are not usually diagnostic; 18% of patients with keratoconus have readings flatter than 45.00 D. Treatment requires correction of acuity with spectacles or contact lenses. More advanced cases are generally managed with rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. Corneal scarring occurs in approximately 43% of case

BACKGROUND: In young patients with the clinical symptoms of a neuritis neuroradiological imaging is not always necessary. This case report describes a young patient who suffered from a recurrence after 5 years. Since all findings, particularly visual evoked potentials, were classic for neuritis, the patient was treated for neuritis although periocular pain was not present.
CASE REPORT: Five years after a neuritis of the left eye (OS), the patient was again referred with a visual loss (VA 0.3 OS). In addition to an afferent pupillary defect OS and a constricted visual field OS, an inter-eye la

A 63-year-old man presented with a 10-day history of severe pain, redness of the right eye, and reduced vision in both eyes. In addition, he had been diagnosed incidentally with liver cirrhosis and splenomegaly 1 week before he was admitted to our center. The patient was found to have severe intraocular inflammation that initially involved the right eye and then progressed to bilateral panuveitis. The presenting visual acuity was 20/60 for the left eye and lumbar puncture (LP) for the right eye. Vitreous tap revealed a nonturbid, yellow fluid that was negative for organism culture, polymerase

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and patient satisfaction of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) monovision correction in presbyopic emmetropic patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 294 patients who underwent LASIK for monovision was conducted. All patients had preoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity in each eye of 20/25 or better in both eyes and underwent primary LASIK treatment in one eye with a near target; 82 patients underwent surgery in the distant eye for hypermetropia. Patients completed a patient-reported-outcome questionnaire at their one-month postoperative vis

PURPOSE: To determine whether with-the-rule (WTR) or against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism gives a better visual outcome after cataract and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation surgery by comparing the uncorrected distance and near visual acuities in eyes with low, simple, myopic residual astigmatism.
SETTING: S. Geraldo Eye Hospital, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
METHODS: Two groups of 10 eyes each, one with WTR and the other with ATR simple, myopic astigmatism, were studied after uneventful cataract and IOL implantation surgery. All patients had an uncorrected dis

Although visual field defects occur commonly from optic disc drusen, reduction in visual acuity is rare. We describe four patients with reduced visual acuity and one with visual field constriction to the point of legal blindness that resulted from optic disc drusen. The acute episodic and stepwise nature of visual loss in some of the cases in our series suggests a vascular mechanism. Reduced visual acuity from drusen remains a diagnosis of exclusion. It should be considered, however, when visual loss has been acute and nonprogressive or stepwise in a nerve fiber bundle distribution and when vi

INTRODUCTION: Complex corneal conditions present surgical challenges and necessitate innovation. Here, we present two cases where we performed intraocular lens trans-scleral fixation using the double-needle Yamane technique, followed by penetrating keratoplasty and vitrectomy using a temporary Landers wide-field keratoprosthesis.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1 involved a 70-year-old man with an aphakic eye of bullous keratopathy and corneal opacity owing to multiple penetrating and endothelial keratoplasty, endophthalmitis, and herpetic keratitis. His visual acuity was counting fingers at 20 cm be

Small-aperture corneal inlays, commonly known as KAMRA, are tiny optical devices inserted in the corneal stroma aiming to gain near vision in patients with presbyopia. The purpose of this study was to systematically review case series of small-aperture corneal inlays performed in presbyopic emmetropic patients and to evaluate the visual outcomes of this procedure. This systematic review included 18 articles published between 2011 and 2018, overall studying 2724 eyes from 2691 participants. The mean longest follow-up was 19 months. Results showed that 78.5% of eyes reported an uncorrected near

PURPOSE: Corneal irregularities can lead to high order aberrations (HOAs) and may influence the outcomes in terms of intraocular lens (IOL) selection and visual acuity assessment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the visual acuity and satisfaction after IC-8 implants in patients characterized by corneal irregularities and HOAs who could not undergo refractive surgery due to the poor residual thickness of the cornea or other conditions such as astigmatism secondary to previous radial keratotomy.
METHODS: This descriptive, retrospective cohort study was conducted on nine eyes in six patien
