Initial experience with a juvenile sheep model for evaluation of the pediatric intracorporeal ventricular assist devices [corrected].

There is a scarcity of source material available in animal models appropriate to test pediatric-size blood pump design for assisting the left ventricle. A juvenile ovine animal model was developed to evaluate two pediatric ventricular assist devices (VADs). The child-size Jarvik 2000 and CircuLite VADs were tested with this model. The 33 in vivo experiments were retrospectively studied to evaluate the reliability of the animal model. Dorset hybrid juvenile sheep (20~36 kg) were used to evaluate the small pediatric VADs. Under general anesthesia, a left lateral thoracotomy was performed through

Palonosetron versus tropisetron with dexamethasone for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in pediatric adenotonsillectomy: a single center, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remain significant complications following pediatric adenotonsillectomy. Although palonosetron, a second-generation 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, has shown potential for preventing PONV, further research is needed to assess its efficacy when combined with dexamethasone in pediatric otolaryngologic procedures. This study aims to observe the efficacy of palonosetron or tropisetron combined with dexamethasone in preventing PONV in children undergoing adenotonsillectomy. METHODS: We enrolled 110 children scheduled for elective adenotonsillectomy u

Validation of age and height based formulae to predict paediatric airway distances - a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative airway evaluation in children is an important part of routine preanesthetic evaluation before surgery. External airway measurements, viz., thyromental, mentohyoid, and sternomental distances, while being growth dependent, could identify pediatric patients with potentially difficult airways. OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to validate the age- and height-based formulae, derived from a previous study conducted in our institute, to predict thyromental distance, sternomental distance, and mentohyoid distance in relation with the height and age of pediatric patients.

Ultrasound Guided In-Plane Penile Nerve Block for Circumcision: A New, Modified Technique Suggests Lower Anesthetic Volume and Narcotic Use.

CONTEXT: Circumcision is one of the most common surgical procedures in pediatric males. Anesthesia is often the classic dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB), which is based on landmark identification and tactile feel of tissue resistance during needle advancement. However, this technique is associated with technical failures and vascular complications. OBJECTIVE: We used an ultrasound-guided in-plane technique to avoid injury of penile vascular and neural tissues during DPNB. The aims of this retrospective study were to compare the success rate and efficacy of these two penile block techniques.

Caudal extradural catheterization in pediatric renal transplant and its effect on perioperative hemodynamics and pain scoring: a prospective randomized study.

PURPOSE: 'Hockey stick incision' used in renal transplant is large enough to cause severe postoperative morbidity especially in pediatric recipients. Although epidural analgesia is known to be effective in pain control, the resulting sympathectomy might affect hemodynamics interfering with the transplant process. In our study, we evaluated the feasibility and safety of inserting an epidural catheter to the thoracic level via the caudal route, and the effect of using epidural local anesthetics at low concentrations on hemodynamics. METHODS: After approval from the ethical committee at Kasr Al
