Development and validation of a dynamic risk prediction system for constipation in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Although constipation is a common non-motor symptom in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), it is poorly valued. Moreover, there is a bidirectional effect between constipation and neuropsychiatric and sleep disturbances. Thus, these symptoms are better treated simultaneously. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate a model for predicting the risk of constipation in ALS patients, to help clinicians identify and treat constipation early. METHODS: Data of 118 ALS admissions from an observational prospective cohort, registered between March 2017 and Decembe

Effects of chronic exposure to a mixed field of neutrons and photons on behavioral and cognitive performance in mice.

To simulate the space radiation environment astronauts are exposed to, most studies involve acute exposures but during a space mission there will be chronic (long-lasting) exposures. To address this knowledge gap, a neutron irradiator using a 252Cf (252Californium) source was used to generate a mixed field of neutrons and photons to simulate chronic, low dose rate exposures to high LET radiation. In the present study, we assessed the effects chronic neutron exposure starting at 60 days of age on behavioral and cognitive performance of BALB/c female and C3H male mice at 600 and 700 days of age

Prevalence and Predictors of Preoperative Anxiety in Patients With An Intracranial Supratentorial Neoplasm Undergoing Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is common among patients, particularly in neurosurgical patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence and predictive factors of preoperative anxiety using the state anxiety scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) among patients undergoing elective craniotomy for a supratentorial neoplasm. This study also determined the optimal Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) score for the identification of preoperative anxiety in this cohort. METHODS: Sixty patients aged 18 to 65 years with American Society of Anesthesiol

Amygdala's T1-weighted image radiomics outperforms volume for differentiation of anxiety disorder and its subtype.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorder is the most common psychiatric disorder among adolescents, with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) being a common subtype of anxiety disorder. Current studies have revealed abnormal amygdala function in patients with anxiety compared with healthy people. However, the diagnosis of anxiety disorder and its subtypes still lack specific features of amygdala from T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. The purpose of our study was to investigate the feasibility of using radiomics approach to distinguish anxiety disorder and its subtype from healthy con

Is Overparenting Associated with Adolescent/Young Adult Emotional Functioning and Clinical Outcomes Following Concussion?

Overparenting (O-P), or "helicopter" parenting, has warranted increased attention across the past decade. It is characterized as being overly involved, protective, and low on granting autonomy, and is associated with deleterious psychosocial outcomes outside of the concussion literature. This study examined the association of overparenting and patient emotional distress and clinical outcomes (i.e., symptoms, neurocognitive test scores, recovery time) post-concussion. Adolescents/young adult concussion patients (injury < 30 days) and parents (N = 101 child-parent dyads) participated. Patient pa

Subtyping social anxiety in youth.

Few empirical studies have examined subtypes of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in youth, and limited consensus resides on the nature of potential subtypes. Identifying subtypes, based on both fear and avoidance patterns, can help improve assessment and treatment of SAD. Subtypes of fear and avoidance were examined in a sample comprising 131 youth (age 8-15 years) diagnosed with SAD using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for children and parents (ADIS-C/P). Exploratory factor analysis of fear responses revealed three factors, defining fear subtypes linked to: (1) performance, (2) observa

Self-regulation and working memory in musical performers.

Performing music in front of others can be stressful, even for experienced performers. The physiological effects of stress, namely, increases in cortisol and sympathetic nervous system activity, have been shown to have detrimental effects on cognition, particularly working memory. This study used an audition-like performance scenario to elicit a stress response in performers who differed in their degree of musical experience. We expected that participants with more musical experience would be better able to regulate their stress response, would report lower levels of anxiety, insecurity, and n

How is the Beads Task related to intolerance of uncertainty in anxiety disorders?

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is a cognitive bias associated with anxiety disorders that has only been reliably measured using self-report instruments. The current study investigated relationships between a probabilistic inference task - the Beads Task - and self-report IU. Individuals with anxiety disorders (ANX) and non-anxious controls (NAC) completed self-report measures as well as the Beads Task at three levels of difficulty. The Beads Task successfully induced task-related uncertainty as the decision became more difficult. While the two groups did not differ on the observable performan

The impact of the stimulus features and task instructions on facial processing in social anxiety: an ERP investigation.

Social anxiety has been characterized by an attentional bias towards threatening faces. Electrophysiological studies have demonstrated modulations of cognitive processing from 100 ms after stimulus presentation. However, the impact of the stimulus features and task instructions on facial processing remains unclear. Event-related potentials were recorded while high and low socially anxious individuals performed an adapted Stroop paradigm that included a colour-naming task with non-emotional stimuli, an emotion-naming task (the explicit task) and a colour-naming task (the implicit task) on happy

Testing the efficacy of theoretically derived improvements in the treatment of social phobia.

Recent theoretical models of social phobia suggest that targeting several specific cognitive factors in treatment should enhance treatment efficacy over that of more traditional skills-based treatment programs. In the current study, 195 people with social phobia were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 treatments: standard cognitive restructuring plus in vivo exposure, an "enhanced" treatment that augmented the standard program with several additional treatment techniques (e.g., performance feedback, attention retraining), and a nonspecific (stress management) treatment. The enhanced treatment demons

Potential anxiogenic effects of cannabinoid CB1 receptor antagonists/inverse agonists in rats: comparisons between AM4113, AM251, and the benzodiazepine inverse agonist FG-7142.

Cannabinoid CB1 inverse agonists suppress food-motivated behaviors, but may also induce psychiatric effects such as depression and anxiety. To evaluate behaviors potentially related to anxiety, the present experiments assessed the CB1 inverse agonist AM251 (2.0-8.0mg/kg), the CB1 antagonist AM4113 (3.0-12.0mg/kg), and the benzodiazepine inverse agonist FG-7142 (10.0-20.0mg/kg), using the open field test and the elevated plus maze. Although all three drugs affected open field behavior, these effects were largely due to actions on locomotion. In the elevated plus maze, FG-7142 and AM251 both pro

Long-lasting effects of neonatal ionizing radiation exposure on spatial memory and anxiety-like behavior.

Neonatal ionizing radiation exposure has been shown to induce a cerebellar cytoarchitecture disarrangement. Since cerebellar abnormalities have been linked to an impairment of behavioral functions, the aim of the present work was to investigate whether exposure of developing rats to ionizing radiations can produce behavioral deficits in the adult. Male Wistar rats were X-irradiated with 5Gy within 48h after birth and were tested in a radial maze and in an open field at 30 and 90 days post irradiation. Irradiated rats showed significative changes in spatial, exploratory, and procedural paramete

Postnatal psychiatric morbidity: a validation study of the GHQ-12 and the EPDS as screening tools.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the validity of the 12-Item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in screening for the most common postnatal psychiatric morbidities (mood, anxiety and adjustment disorders). METHOD: A two-phase cross-sectional study was designed. First, a sample of 1453 women visiting at 6 weeks postpartum completed the GHQ-12 and the EPDS questionnaires. Second, based upon EPDS outcomes, participants were stratified and randomly selected within each stratum for clinical evaluation [Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID)]. Rece

Emotional stability; its relationship to confidence in maintaining balance.

Previous failures to find an association between postural test results and the complaints of dizziness/imbalance were further investigated in neuro-otology out-patients, testing in a range of everyday situations requiring balance. Three matched groups of patients were compared: those complaining of dizziness/imbalance; those reporting but not complaining of dizziness/imbalance; and those who had never experienced these symptoms as noteworthy. No difference was found between the groups in measures of postural performance, self-reported confidence in balance, or in several trait measures of fear

Generalization of therapeutic changes in agoraphobia: the role of perceived self-efficacy.

Investigated the extent and mechanisms of therapeutic generalization across distinct areas of agoraphobic dysfunction. Twenty-seven severe agoraphobics were each given performance-based treatment for some phobic areas while leaving their other phobias untreated. Behavioral tests revealed that (a) the treated phobias improved significantly more than the untreated (transfer) phobias, (b) the transfer phobias improved significantly more than control phobias, and (c) the transfer benefits were highly variable within and between subjects. Analyses of possible cognitive mechanisms revealed that perc

Patient-Reported Outcomes in a Multidisciplinary Electrophysiology-Psychology Ventricular Arrhythmia Clinic.

Background Ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) and their treatment have been associated with psychological distress and diminished quality of life (QOL). We administered a battery of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to patients seeing an electrophysiologist and psychologist in a multidisciplinary VA clinic for patients referred for consideration of catheter ablation for sustained VAs or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapies. Methods and Results In this retrospective study of the initial VA clinic visit, we analyzed PROMs of: anxiety and depression symptoms, visual analog scales f
