A variety of individual nail dystrophies that are not categorized easily in other articles are reviewed. Onychoatrophia, anonychia, onychorrhexis, leukonychia, Beau's lines, onycholysis, onychomadesis, onychoschizia, haplonychia, longitudinal melanonychia, and ventral pterygium are included and pictured clinically. Their clinical description, etiology, associated conditions, differential diagnoses, and treatments are discussed and tabulated.

Lipodermatosclerosis refers to the skin induration and hyperpigmentation of the legs that often occurs in patients who have venous insufficiency. Lipodermatosclerosis has also been termed hypodermitis sclerodermiformis and appears to be similar if not-identical to the recently described sclerosing panniculitis of the leg. There has been much confusion about the nature, clinical course, and treatment of lipodermatosclerosis. We believe that lipodermatosclerosis has an acute, inflammatory phase and a chronic, fibrotic stage, although a spectrum exists. Direct immunofluorescence studies of early

Zidovudine has become the standard therapy for patients with AIDS and for asymptomatic HIV infected patients with low helper-T-cell levels. As experience with the drug has grown, knowledge of the range of side effects has increased. We describe progressive pigmentation of finger and toe nails in a white patient due to zidovudine therapy, a phenomenon not often described. Nail pigmentation occurs primarily in black patients. It appears to be reversible and relatively dose dependent. The mechanism responsible for the discoloration is unknown. It is important to alert patients to this side effect

A case of a 53 years old woman with Crow-Fukase's syndrome, the first case diagnosed and described in Bulgaria, is presented. The patient presented with polyneuropathy (predominantly locomotor, better expressed in the legs and less expressed in the hands, with hyperproteinorachia), anasarca (peripherial edema, ascites, hydrothorax), skin changes (hyperpigmentations), endocrinopathy (transitory carbohydrate intolerance), dysglobulinemia, organomegaly (hepatomegaly).

Cytogenetic studies in four patients affected by Incontinentia pigmenti and in their relatives did not show a significant increase of chromatid and chromosome gaps and breaks. This seems to negate a correlation between these findings and the disease. We propose that the responsibility for the chromosomal breakages sometimes observed in this syndrome can be due to external factors that disturb the basal percentage of the lesions.

A 70-year-old woman developed dark reddish blue pigmentation in scarred areas of discoid lupus erythematosus after taking clofazimine intermittently over a period of 10 years. Although light microscopy of routinely processed tissue failed to define the cause of the pigment, fluorescent microscopy showed vivid red deposits concentrated around larger vessels within the dermis. These deposits were shown to correspond to birefringent red clofazimine crystals on fresh frozen sections. Although the hyperpigmentation may clinically resemble melanin, biopsy specimens from our patient revealed a loss o

The term neurofibromatosis designates a spectrum of disorders, the most common of which is von Recklinghausen's disease. We describe two patients with forms of neurofibromatosis other than von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis, characterized by involvement of half of the face and the contralateral lower extremity. Neither patient had a family history of neurofibromatosis, and a thorough evaluation of both patients failed to reveal evidence of von Recklinghausen's disease. The classification of neurofibromatosis is briefly summarized, with special emphasis placed on the need for a specific dia

The fact that larger doses of phenothiazine medications cause more anterior chamber (lens and cornea) pigmentation in schizophrenics has been apparent since the introduction of these neuroleptic drugs nearly 30 years ago. The present study relates the extent of pigmentation to the dose and duration of phenothiazine administration in long-term schizophrenics. An investigation and analysis of the medication records of 272 pigmented schizophrenics show a statistically significant correlation between most of the pigmentation grades and the associated dose of medication. The results indicate that r
