The hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is an acidic protein with a strong mitogenic effect on hepatocytes. Hepatocyte growth factor mRNA recently was cloned from a placental cDNA library. Here we demonstrate the purification of HGF from human placenta with heparin-agarose chromatography and TSK-heparin high-pressure liquid chromatography and describe the distribution of placental HGF by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody to HGF. Placenta accreta is defined as a condition involving an abnormal adherence of the placenta to the myometrium. It is rare for placenta accreta to present before 20 weeks' gestation; only eight cases have been previously reported. This case report describes a first-trimester placenta accreta which presented during suction curettage for missed abortion. The major risk factors for placenta accreta are related to previous uterine trauma. Considering the rising rate of operative births in the United States, it is possible that the incidence of placenta accreta in early gestation will increase.

Puerperal hematomas, although rare, can be potentially morbid or life-threatening events. Early surgical management, including clot evacuation, layered closure, drainage, antibiotics, and fluid replacement (including blood), usually result in satisfactory outcome. Prevention is clearly preferable and often achievable with careful initial repair of episiotomies and lacerations.

A prospective study was conducted to determine the risk of placenta previa and unexplained antepartum hemorrhage after a previous cesarean section (CS). Of a total of 24,644 patients, 81 (0.33%) had a placenta previa which demanded abdominal delivery. The results of an echographic study to determine the causal factors in 63 consecutive cases of second-trimester bleeding are presented. True second-trimester bleeding is uncommon (0.8% of pregnancies during the study period), but the impact on fetal outcome is serious because the condition is associated with late abortion, preterm intra-uterine demise, preterm birth, and neurologic sequelae. A case report is presented in which abruptio placenta occurs five days after trauma. This is a very rare occurrence. The high incidence of abruption occurring after severe trauma is reviewed, and the importance of continuous fetal monitoring for at least 48 hours after admission to the hospital is stressed.

Assays for serum placenta-like (Regan) isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase were done on 157 samples from 96 patients with prostatic cancer entered into various National Prostatic Cancer Project protocols. Studies were made of the immunoglobulin (Ig) in serums from umbilical cord of newborn pigs and maternal placenta. The neutralization test for porcine parvovirus and Japanese encephalitis virus was carried out with the serum of the sow and that of the umbilical cord of the newborn pig. Comparative studies of the serums from the dam and the umbilical cord were also done with gel filtration. Of 20 umbilical cord serum samples, IgG was seen in 5 samples (25%), IgA in 1 sample (5%), and IgM in 9 samples (45%).
