Glyphosate, or N-phosphomethyl(glycine), is an organophosphorus compound and a competitive inhibitor of the shikimate pathway that allows aromatic amino acid biosynthesis in plants and microorganisms. Its utilization in broad-spectrum herbicides, such as RoundUp®, has continued to increase since 1974; glyphosate, as well as its primary metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid, is measured in soils, water, plants, animals and food. In humans, glyphosate is detected in blood and urine, especially in exposed workers, and is excreted within a few days. It has long been regarded as harmless in animals

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that specific molecular sensitization patterns correlate with the clinical data/manifestation in a European peanut-allergic population characterized under a common protocol.
METHODS: Sixty-eight peanut-allergic subjects and 82 tolerant controls from 11 European countries were included. Allergy to peanut and lowest symptom-eliciting dose was established by double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge in all but anaphylactic subjects. Information of early or late (before or after 14 years of age) onset of peanut allergy was obtained from standardized quest

In the last decade plant-to-plant communication has received an increasing attention, particularly for the role of Volatile Organic Compounds as possible elicitors of plant defense. The role of β-ocimene as an interspecific elicitor of plant defense has been recently assessed in multitrophic systems including different plant species (Solanaceae, Poaceae, legumes) and different pest species including chewer insects and phytophagous mites. Both chewer insects and phytophagous mites are known to elicit specific plant defensive pathways which are different (at least in part) from those elicited by

BACKGROUND: Primary apple allergy is frequent in Mediterranean countries where hypersensitivity to lipid transfer protein (LTP) is common. Due to its stability upon pepsin digestion, LTP may cause systemic allergic reactions. This study investigated the potential risk associated with an isolated intake of apple while fasting in LTP-hypersensitive patients with clinical allergy to peach but not to apple.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Based on the observation of 6 patients who experienced 7 apple-induced anaphylactic reactions that in 6 cases followed the ingestion of the fruit after fasting, open food

The Compositae (Asteraceae) family of plants is currently an important cause of allergic plant contact dermatitis in Europe. The family comprises some of the oldest and most valued medicinal plants, and the increasing popularity of herbal medicine and cosmetics may theoretically result in a growing number of Compositae sensitizations from these sources. According to the literature at least 15 species, including among others arnica (Arnica montana), German and Roman chamomile (Chamomilla recutita and Chamaemelum nobile), marigold (Calendula officinalis), Echinacea and elecampane (Inula helenium

UNLABELLED: Calmodulin-binding proteins (CBPs) have been known to be involved in both biotic and abiotic stress responses. Recently, two closely related CBPs, Arabidopsis SAR Deficient 1 and CBP60g, were found to belong to a new family of transcription factors that regulate salicylic acid (SA) biosynthesis triggered by microbe-associated molecular patterns. In this study, we found that overexpression of CBP60g in Arabidopsis caused elevated SA accumulation, increased expression of the defense genes, and enhanced resistance to Pseudomonas syringae. In addition to the enhanced defense response,

Adaptive features of innate immunity, recently described as "trained immunity," have been documented in plants, invertebrate animals, and mice, but not yet in humans. Here we show that bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination in healthy volunteers led not only to a four- to sevenfold increase in the production of IFN-γ, but also to a twofold enhanced release of monocyte-derived cytokines, such as TNF and IL-1β, in response to unrelated bacterial and fungal pathogens. The enhanced function of circulating monocytes persisted for at least 3 mo after vaccination and was accompanied by increased e

Honeybee health is a key factor in sustainable apiculture, with the most significant colony losses attributed to the mite Varroa destructor and microsporidia of the genus Nosema spp. The aim of this review article is to summarise current knowledge on the use of pharmaceuticals and preparations in the prevention and treatment of these diseases and to highlight promising alternatives to synthetic acaricides. Commonly used active substances such as amitraz and pyrethroids show decreased efficacy in many countries due to the development of resistance. Therefore, organic acids (formic, oxalic, and

The liver is an essential organ crucial for metabolism, detoxification, and maintaining homeostasis, faces growing global health challenges such as alcoholic liver disease (ALD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. These conditions collectively account for significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although traditional treatments help control symptoms and slow disease progression, they are frequently hindered by issues such as drug resistance, side effects, and high costs, especially in areas with limited resources. Drug-induced liver injury (

Molecules from animals or plant species have been investigated with the aim of treating diseases of epidemiological importance, such as rabies, which is a viral, acute, and infectious disease with approximately 100% lethality. Rabies has been one of the main causes of death in humans concerning infectious diseases. This work investigated the action and preliminary mechanisms of the alkaloid bufotenine in an in vivo model with the rabies virus. A wild-type virus was titrated and injected into mice for the determination of DL50 in the presence or absence of bufotenine. The results reveal that bu

Oligogalacturonides (OGs) released from plant cell walls by pathogen polygalacturonases induce a variety of host defense responses. Here we show that in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), OGs increase resistance to the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea independently of jasmonate (JA)-, salicylic acid (SA)-, and ethylene (ET)-mediated signaling. Microarray analysis showed that about 50% of the genes regulated by OGs, including genes encoding enzymes involved in secondary metabolism, show a similar change of expression during B. cinerea infection. In particular, expression of PHYTOA

The health of humans and livestock is significantly compromised by the pervasive and serious issue of mycotoxin contamination in crops. Exploring ways to eliminate mycotoxin contamination is a global concern. In vivo biological prevention and treatment of mycotoxin damage demand a comprehensive understanding of its harm mechanisms, which is essential for developing comprehensive strategies. This study aimed to systematically review the mechanisms by which mycotoxin contamination damages the organism, causing oxidative stress, cellular apoptosis, autophagy, ferroptosis, and via the gut-liver ax

Xenarthran mammals of the suborder Folivora are arboreal species that feed mainly on leaves and Cecropia spp, an abundant plant in the Brazilian Amazon region, is favoured. The stomach of sloths represents 20-30% of their body weight and is adapted to gastric fermentation of plant material. These anatomical and physiological adaptations can be altered by many factors when confined to captivity, which favours fatal gastric conditions. The objective of this study was to describe the gastric anatomopathological lesions in three two-toed sloths (Choloepus didactylus) from a wildlife rescue centre.

Plague is still an endemic disease in different regions of the world. Increasing reports of incidence, the discovery of antibiotic resistance strains, and concern about a potential use of the causative bacteria Yersinia pestis as an agent of biological warfare have highlighted the need for a safe, efficacious, and rapidly producible vaccine. The use of F1 and V antigens and the derived protein fusion F1-V has shown great potential as a protective vaccine in animal studies. Plants have been extensively studied for the production of pharmaceutical proteins as an inexpensive and scalable alternat
