Parental sex preference and its effects on fertility intention and contraceptive use in Calcutta.

This study investigated parental sex preference and its effects on fertility intention and contraceptive use in Calcutta. It also investigated the socioeconomic differentials of these effects. Data on 4536 married women of childbearing age came from a cross-sectional survey of slum and non-slum areas conducted in 1970. Desired numbers of sons and daughters in the slum area were 1.89 and 1.30, respectively, and in the non-slum area, 1.63 and 1.17, respectively. 35% of slum women and 30% of non-slum women wanted to have more children, and 22% of slum women and 45% of non-slum women were reported

Digital literacy: The catalyst for credit access and income growth in rural households.

To clarify the role of digital literacy improvement in farm household income growth, this paper constructs a digital literacy assessment framework covering seven dimensions and uses data from a 2023 rural survey in China to empirically examine the impact of digital literacy on farm household income. The findings indicate that digital literacy significantly enhances income growth among farm households. Mechanism analysis reveals that digital literacy improves access to credit for farm households, thereby facilitating income growth. The effect of digital literacy on household income varies by gr

Predictors of mothers' participation in a mother-only coparenting intervention conducted in fatherhood programs.

While fatherhood programs are increasingly implementing coparenting classes for mothers, very little is known about the circumstances that could increase or inhibit a mother's participation in joining such a class. The current study uses ecological systems theory to explore the microsystems, mesosystems, and macrosystems that relate to mothers' participation in a coparenting class. Pretest data from 277 fathers attending fatherhood programs are used to predict mothers' participation in a mother-only coparenting class. Fathers' perceived relationship quality, perceptions of the coparenting alli

Discrete morphological variants of human cervical vertebrae: Exploring pattern of distribution and biological significance.

Studies on discrete traits of the human cervical vertebrae, appearing at certain intervals during the last century, posed some questions regarding evolutionary processes that human cervical spine underwent during phylogenesis. To address questions of significance of these morphological traits we need first a good knowledge of the extent of their variation in modern humans. The aim of the current work was to integrate available data on the occurrence of various non-metric traits in the human cervical spine and search for the pattern of their distribution on intra- and inter-population levels. Association of childhood residential environment and family socioeconomic status with physical activity in early adulthood - a population-based Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 study.

BACKGROUND: Higher socioeconomic status is associated with more physical activity in both childhood and adulthood. There is conflicting evidence about the importance of the urban and rural residential environment on children's physical activity. The family socioeconomic status and urban-rural residential area may have combined associations with children's physical activity, but the evidence so far is scarce, and has mainly come from cross-sectional studies. METHODS: We used population-based cohort data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986). Participants (n = 9432) parents rep

Individual and Environmental Correlations with Vaccination Status in Canada: The COHESION study.

Despite the importance of vaccination, some individuals are not vaccinated due to multiple factors. This study expands on previous research by incorporating elements of the physical and social neighborhood to depict vaccination profiles based on urbanization degree, identifying additional correlations with COVID-19 vaccination status and offering a fresh perspective on this complex issue. This study used three datasets: the COHESION cohort's second phase, which is a comprehensive Canadian COVID-19 dataset, encompassing demographic and socioeconomic variables; and the CANUE and StatCan datasets

Food consumption patterns and their micronutrient content in India: Evidence from the household consumption expenditure surveys, 2011-12 and 2023-24.

BACKGROUND: India's food consumption landscape has transformed over the past decade, with implications for nutrition security. This article quantifies changes in household expenditure, consumption patterns across major food groups, and dietary sources of selected micronutrients. METHODS: Data from nationally representative Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys (HCES) 2011-12 and 2023-24 were analysed. Food quantities were standardised to adult female equivalents, and micronutrient intake was derived by linking food acquisition data to Indian Food Composition Tables. Models were fitted usi

Comparative studies of how living circumstances influence medication adherence in ≥65 year olds.

BACKGROUND: Resources to help the older aged (≥65 year olds) manage their medicines should probably target those in greatest need. The older-aged have many different types of living circumstances. There are different locations (urban, rural), different types of housing (in the community or in retirement villages), different living arrangements (living alone or with others), and different socioeconomic status (SES) circumstances. However, there has been limited attention to whether these living circumstances affect adherence to medicines in the ≥65 year olds. AIM OF THE REVIEW: The aim was to

Returning migrant characteristics and labor market demand in Greece.

Immigrants who repatriate bring with them modern work skills which many observers in labor exporting regions describe as a great contribution to the mother country. Using data from 2 samples of Greek repatriates as well as projections of industrial labor force demands in Greece for the 1980s, this article challenges this concept. The authors find that the uneven regional development and stunted industrial growth which pushed these workers abroad are also responsible for the narrowly limited employment options which they face once they repatriate. For the urban repatriate, the market is limited

Immigration and ageing.

"This paper aims to provide an overview of immigration and ageing, and to highlight some implications of the numbers and characteristics of the immigrant elderly for the development of policies for aged care [in Australia]. Particular attention is given to the issues of demographic ageing, family support and institutionalisation." The author uses data from recent official and other published sources to examine the elderly immigrant population by birthplace and racial origin, sex, proportion institutionalized, and proportion handicapped. It is found that "insufficient recognition of the widespr
