Applying vibration in early postmenopausal osteoporosis promotes osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and suppresses postmenopausal osteoporosis progression.

We aimed to evaluate whether applying low magnitude vibration (LMV) in early postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) suppresses its progression, and to investigate underlying mechanisms. Rats were randomly divided into Sham (Sham-operated), Sham+V, OVX (ovariectomized), OVX+E2 (estradiol benzoate), OVX+V (LMV at 12-20 weeks postoperatively), and OVX+Vi (LMV at 1-20 weeks postoperatively) groups. LMV was applied for 20 min once daily for 5 days weekly. V rats were loaded with LMV at 12-20 weeks postoperatively. Vi rats were loaded with LMV at 1-20 weeks postoperatively. Estradiol (E2) rats were intra

The relationship of biochemical markers of bone turnover to bone density changes in postmenopausal women: results from the Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions (PEPI) trial.

We assessed the associations of eight bone turnover markers (BTMs) with baseline and 1-year percentage changes in lumbar spine and hip bone mineral density (BMD) of 293 postmenopausal women undergoing treatment with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or placebo using squared correlation coefficients (R2). In 239 women assigned to treatment with estrogen alone or with with estrogen plus progestins (active treatment), mean percentage changes for all markers decreased significantly and remained below baseline values through 3 years of study, whereas mean percentage changes for 54 women assigned to

Effects of hormone replacement therapy on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with primary hyperparathyroidism: four-year follow-up and comparison with healthy postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Long-term treatment of patients with asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism remains controversial, but the presence of osteoporosis is regarded as an indication for parathyroidectomy. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a possible alternative therapy in osteopenic postmenopausal women with the disorder, and results of short-term studies suggest a beneficial effect on bone mass comparable to that achieved by parathyroidectomy. Longer-term data are required to further assess the efficacy of this treatment in chronic stable primary hyperparathyroidism. METHODS: We report the resul

Low intervertebral disc height in postmenopausal women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures compared to hormone-treated and untreated postmenopausal women and premenopausal women without fractures.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the intervertebral disc height in postmenopausal women with osteoporotic vertebral fractures. METHODS: A total of 203 women were recruited from a bone densitometer directory. The disc heights measured were those between the 12th thoracic and 3rd lumbar vertebrae. The discs were assigned the symbols D, whereby D(1) refers to the disc between the 12th thoracic and 1st lumbar vertebrae. The disc height of the group of women (n = 38) with osteoporotic vertebral fractures was compared to the disc heights of hormone-treated women (n = 47), untreated postmenopausal women (n = 77

Lipoprotein(a) and incident venous thromboembolism in pre- and postmenopausal women, and in men.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are an established risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, but the association between Lp(a) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains unclear. Sex and hormonal status may modify the relationship between Lp(a) and VTE. METHODS: The present study included participants from the UK Biobank with available baseline Lp(a) data. Individuals with a history of VTE or cancer, as well as those using anticoagulants, were excluded. Multivariable-adjusted Cox models were used to assess the association between Lp(a) levels ≥125 nmol/

Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin in Postmenopausal Women With Urinary Incontinence.

IMPORTANCE: Vaginal estrogen may improve urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) while systemic estrogen may worsen urinary incontinence (UI). Low testosterone is linked to UI. Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) binds circulating estrogen and testosterone, reducing bioavailability and potentially affecting genitourinary function by limiting local hormone availability. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between UI and SHBG levels, bioavailable estrogen, and testosterone in postmenopausal women. We hypothesized that women with higher SHBG levels would be m

Comparison of Hysteroscopic and Blind Endometrial Biopsy Techniques in Postmenopausal Women.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the tissue adequacy of hysteroscopy-guided endometrial biopsy using 2 different instruments and blind Pipelle biopsy in postmenopausal women with suspected endometrial pathology. METHODS: This prospective, single-center, paired comparative study included postmenopausal women evaluated for abnormal uterine bleeding or increased endometrial thickness. All participants underwent hysteroscopy-guided biopsy using spoon and grasper forceps, followed by blind Pipelle endometrial sampling during the same session. Biopsy adequacy was assessed based on predefined histopathological

Prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal Indian women: A cross-sectional study.

Osteoporosis remains an underdiagnosed public health challenge among postmenopausal Indian women due to limited routine screening and delayed risk recognition. Therefore, it is of interest to study evaluating bone mineral density and associated risk factors in postmenopausal women using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. A high prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis was observed, with advancing age, multiparity, prolonged menopausal duration, tobacco use and low educational status showing significant associations with reduced bone mass. Thus, we show a substantial hidden burden of low bone d

Association between myosteatosis and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

UNLABELLED: This study examined the association between abdominal muscle quality and bone mineral density (BMD) in 2021 postmenopausal women. A better muscle quality was associated with higher BMD and lower osteoporosis risk, independent of fat and muscle mass, highlighting the clinical relevance of muscle quality in bone health. PURPOSE: Loss of skeletal muscle and bone strength increases the risk of falls and fractures. The association between abdominal muscle quality-assessed by myosteatosis using computed tomography (CT)-and bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear. We investigated this

Hemorrhagic Rupture of a Hepatic Adenoma in a Postmenopausal Female: A Case Report.

Hepatic adenoma (HA) is a rare benign liver lesion most commonly observed in females of reproductive age using oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). Though typically asymptomatic, HA may lead to complications such as hemorrhage or malignant transformation. Current literature highlights an increased risk of hemorrhage in larger lesions among premenopausal females and transformation to hepatocellular carcinoma in postmenopausal females. This report discusses a case of a 58-year-old postmenopausal female who presented with a sudden onset of back pain, syncope, nausea, and vomiting. CT imaging revealed

Risk factors for vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vertebral fractures are the most common osteoporotic fractures in postmenopausal women and are strongly associated with higher morbidity, lower quality of life, and higher risk of death. Identifying risk factors for vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women is essential for early prevention and intervention. The aim of this study was to systematically assess and quantify the risk factors for vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women by meta-analysis. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases to include all ob

Combined Nanoparticle-Based Delivery of Estrogens and Raloxifen in Postmenopausal Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis (OP) is a common chronic disease that significantly increases the risk of bone fractures. Pharmacotherapy uses, among others, 17beta-estradiol (E2), which has been replaced in recent years by raloxifene hydrochloride (RLX). The need for long-term, high-dose therapy with these drugs is associated with serious adverse effects. The aim of this review is to analyze the current state of knowledge over the last 5 years (2020-2025) regarding the use of nanoparticles (NPs) in the delivery of E2 and RLX, with particular emphasis on their impact on bioavailability, pharmacokinetic profile,

Estradiol regulates osteoclast sialylation via ST3Gal1 in postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Estrogen deficiency after menopause accelerates bone loss by stimulating osteoclast formation and activity, but the molecular pathways that link estrogen signaling to osteoclast regulation remain incompletely defined. Here, we identify the sialyltransferase ST3GAL-I as a key mediator of RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis. RANKL activates c-FOS to drive ST3GAL1 transcription, whereas estrogen-bound ERα competes with TRAF6 and suppresses this c-FOS-dependent induction. In a clinical cohort of pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women with or without osteoporosis, serum total and α-2,3-linked sialic
