OBJECTIVES: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a common, severe and often fatal complication of diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics and precipitants of DKA, as well as factors associated with DKA severity in Ghanaian patients.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study of the medical records of all 70 adult patients >18 years managed for DKA in the adult emergency room of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana from March 2019 to July 2019. BACKGROUND: Second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) have been associated with adverse metabolic effects, including the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) and, in rare cases, life-threatening hyperglycemic emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS). Paliperidone, a more recently developed SGA, is generally considered to have a more favourable metabolic profile compared with older SGAs.

Anti-tumor necrosis factor monoclonal antibodies are an important tool in the management of rheumatologic disease. However, paradoxical inflammation can be precipitated by their use. This case report describes the development of keratitis and dermatitis following adalimumab treatment for chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis in a 6-year-old girl. The keratitis and dermatitis subsided once topical steroids were started and the adalimumab was held.
