Analysis of Wavefront Data Obtained With a Pyramidal Sensor in Pseudophakic Eyes Implanted With Diffractive Intraocular Lenses.

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical validity of using wavefront measurements obtained with a recently available pyramidal aberrometer to as … seem to properly sample the slopes of a wavefront measured from a pseudophakic eye implanted with a presbyopia-correcting diffractive IOL to a clinically acceptable level. [J Refract Surg. 2023;39(7):438-444.].

The influence of large-diameter multifocal contact lens on ocular surface, visual quality, and visual function for presbyopic adults with dry eye syndromes.

This study investigated the influence of large-diameter multifocal contact lenses on the ocular surface, visual quality, and visual function for presbyopic adults with dry eye syndromes. The study enrolled 40-55-year-old adults with presbyopia and dry eye syndromes (DES). The subjects were randomly assigned to three groups wearing different designs of contact lenses (Proclear, SMR, and Optimum) for 6-8 h a day for two weeks. Ocular surface health, tear quality, visual quality, and visual function were measured before and after lens wear. No significant difference was observed across all three …

Patient-specific determination of change in ocular spherical aberration to improve near and intermediate visual acuity of presbyopic eyes.

The purpose was to determine the optimum negative spherical aberration induction required to improve near and intermediate visual acuity (VA) of presbyopic eyes. A total of 174 normal and diabetic (no retinopathy) presbyopic eyes (age ≥ 40 years) were measured with visual adaptive optics simulator (Voptica, Spain). First, baseline uncorrected VA and aberrations were measured. VA at 40 cm (near), 80 cm (intermediate) and distance was measured. Then, a negative spherical aberration (SA) was added to baseline ocular SA, and VA at all targets was reassessed after correction of distance refractive

Testing vision with angular and radial multifocal designs using Adaptive Optics.

Multifocal vision corrections are increasingly used solutions for presbyopia. In the current study we have evaluated, optically and psychophysically, the quality provided by multizone radial and angular segmented phase designs. Optical and relative visual quality were evaluated using 8 subjects, testing 6 phase designs. Optical quality was evaluated by means of Visual Strehl-based-metrics (VS). The relative visual quality across designs was obtained through a psychophysical paradigm in which images viewed through 210 pairs of phase patterns were perceptually judged. A custom-developed Adaptive…

Reading performance in middle-aged adults with declines in accommodation.

The present study investigated the effects of presbyopia on the reading ability of middle-aged adults in a Japanese reading context, using the rapid serial visual presentation paradigm. Japanese words, each consisting of three characters, were sequentially presented at the same location on a display screen. Participants were instructed to read the words aloud as accurately as possible, irrespective of their order within the sequence. Experiment 1 showed that the reading performance for the presbyopes was far worse for the near-viewing (35 cm) than for the far-viewing (70 cm) conditions when th…

A tertiary level hospital-based study on frequency of changing presbyopic glasses in primary open angle glaucoma patients.

A tertiary level hospital-based case control study on frequency of changing presbyopic glasses among primary open angle glaucoma cases was carried out jointly by the departments of community medicine and ophthalmology from 1st July to 31st December, 2008. Each of the case and control groups included 31 persons. Odd's ratio of 4.55 (95% CI = 1.37-15.68) using epi-info version 3.2 showed that among primary open angle glaucoma cases the time of changing spectacles at < or = 2 years was 4.55 times more than that among control group; Pearson's Chi-square test (chi2 = 7.94, df = 1, p = 0.00) was sta

Objective accommodation measurements in prepresbyopic eyes using an autorefractor and an aberrometer.

PURPOSE: To test the repeatability of the iTrace wavefront aberrometer (Tracey Technologies, Inc.) and the WR-5100K autorefractor (Grand Seiko Co., Ltd.) and to measure accomodation in young and phakic prepresbyopic subjects. SETTING: University of Houston, College of Optometry, Houston, Texas, USA. METHODS: This study comprised 30 young adults and 15 prepresbyopic subjects. Accommodation was stimulated with near charts presented at various distances. Measurements were repeated 3 times for each target distance with both instruments. For test-retest reliability, the entire protocol was repeat

A physiological model to measure effects of age on lenticular accommodation and spherical aberration in chickens.

PURPOSE: To assess physiological accommodative function of intact intraocular lenses, as measured by focal length changes, in chickens of various ages. METHODS: Eyes of white leghorn chickens, aged 0 days (hatchlings), 7 days, 14 days, 6 weeks, 1 year, and 2 years, were enucleated and the backs of the globes, except for the ciliary nerve and ganglion, were removed. The ciliary nerve and ganglion were suctioned into the tip of a suction electrode, and lenses were optically scanned before, during, and after accommodation. Accommodation was elicited by delivery of 30-Hz electrical pulses. RESUL

Age-related response of human lenses to stretching forces.

Five human lenses of varying ages were subjected to radial stretching forces which mimic the action of the ciliary muscle in vivo. Although the number of lenses was small, it was found that the human lens becomes more resistant, with age, to radial stretching forces and that lenses over the age of 50 years showed very little response to stretch. In prepresbyopic lenses, stretching has a greater effect on the shape of the anterior surface than it does on the shape of the posterior surface. The five lenses studied showed individual variations in lens size and shape and a trend to increased curva

Physiology of aging and its influence on the contact lens prescription.

The normal progressive physiological and visual effects of aging and its influence on the ability of contact lenses to provide ametropic correction is examined in this article. Of primary significance is the aging eye's perceptual ability especially in the mesopic range of vision. In addition, a recap of current available techniques is included for correction of presbyopia with contact lenses from the perspective of prescribing for an aging patient--not merely a patient who has lost only the ability to accommodate. One of the hallmarks of the profession of optometry has been its traditional su…

Monovision contact lens wear and occupational task performance.

The effects of monovision (MV) contact lens wear on the performance of occupational-type nearpoint tasks was evaluated on 18 presbyopic subjects (ages 44 to 67 years) by comparing MV performance (MV condition) to that with distance contact lenses with reading glasses (BV condition). Each subject had correctable distance visual acuity of 6/6 (20/20) in each eye, at least 60 sec arc of near stereopsis, good ocular health, and no previous MV experience. Time performance and error performance for 3 nearpoint occupational tasks (pointers and straws, card filing, and letter editing) were measured wi
