BACKGROUND: The association of anal cancer with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is well established; however, little is known about the epidemiology of anal HPV in healthy women. We investigated patterns of duration and clearance of anal HPV infection in a cohort of healthy women in Hawaii.
METHODS: Viral and nonviral determinants of anal HPV clearance were examined in a longitudinal cohort study of 431 sexually active women. At baseline and at 4-month intervals, interviews were conducted and cervical and anal cell specimens were obtained for detection of HPV DNA.

Methods of combined and multimodality therapy are widely used for the treatment of malignant rectal tumors. However radical operation cannot be performed in 50% of patients, in some cases patients refuse surgery. In such cases patients are given a split course of radiation therapy using local heating of a tumor and a method of daily dose fractionation. Altogether 58 patients with stage T2-4N0-1M0-1 were treated by this method: 38 received thermoradiotherapy, 20 were controls. The authors report a case of pyoderma gangrenosum associated with a positive B27 pelvispondylitis. The search for a hemorrhagic rectocolitis, possible link between the two syndromes, revealed to be negative. Pelvispondylitis is an unusual complication of pyoderma gangrenosum. Review of the literature shows only one case of sacroiliitis, beside seronegative polyarthritis unrelated to HLA B27.

Informal surveys at CME meetings have shown that approximately one-third of patients in the United States receive hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) for delayed radiation injury. We present a case of pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) mimicking a lung carcinoma. A 52-year-old woman presented with an unremitting cough. Computed tomography revealed a cavitating lung lesion. Bronchoscopy and biopsy were interpreted as squamous cell carcinoma. Following a staging mediastinoscopy, a sleeve lobectomy and chest-wall resection was performed. Perianal dermatitis is one of the most common proctological disorders. Concerning the etiology, three different types of dermatitis must be distinguished-the most common irritative contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The correct diagnosis is essential for adequate and successful treatment. A variety of benign and malignant disorders must be considered in the differential diagnosis of anal dermatitis. Dermatitic clinical disorders which do not respond to therapy should always be biopsied.

Indications, technique and prognosis of 129 enterostomies in Crohn's disease are reported. Advanced perianal or entero-genital fistulas represented the predominant indication (60% of primary, 46% of repeated stomas). 85% of stomas were created in combination with intestinal resections. The results of combined radiotherapy of corpus uteri cancer in 54 patients with Stages I-III of the disease using an Agat-B remote afterloading apparatus were analysed. The therapeutic efficacy, frequency and severity of radiation complications were assessed. Direct clinical cure was achieved in 52 (96.3%) women. Of the 52 followed-up patients 43 (82.7%) have been alive for 1 year, after 3 yrs. 20 (70.4%) out of the 27 followed-up patients. It is possible to infer from the above data that the results of this therapeutic method are quite satisfactory.

The authors present the results of the use of dibunol in the form of liniment (1-10%) for the treatment of radiation cystitis and rectitis resulting from radiation therapy of small pelvic tumors, epidermitis and epithelitis that develop in the course of treatment of skin and lower lip tumors. A high efficacy of the drug in the therapy of radiation injury has been shown in 212 patients.

The aims of the study were to determine what microscopic changes occur in the rectal mucosa of men who have had anal intercourse and to correlate the sigmoidoscopic and microscopic appearances. Histological abnormalities were found in 29 of 100 men who attended consecutively a sexually-transmitted diseases clinic.
