Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play a critical role in obesity management, yet many report inadequate training, low confidence and stigma-related attitudes. While education programmes have been developed to address these issues, evidence of their effectiveness remains mixed. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of structured education and training programmes in improving HCPs' practice competencies in obesity management. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, ERIC and Google Scholar for studies published from 2020 assessing structured obesity management education progr

Effective leadership during trauma resuscitation is a determinant of team performance and patient outcomes, yet existing training curricula remain procedure-centric and do not explicitly address the leadership domain. A structured, competency-based framework tailored to the resuscitation context may support more consistent training, evaluation, and entrustment of emerging trauma leaders. A narrative review of the literature was conducted across MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus using terms related to trauma, leadership, non-technical skills and competency frameworks. Relevant publications were catego

BACKGROUND: Health professionals and health professions educators (HPEs) worldwide were confronted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted standard practice and forced HPEs to develop creative, alternative modes of training and education. The ability of people to work successfully and efficiently in non-standard situations can be called adaptive expertise in which people quickly overcome changes in work requirements using their expert knowledge in novel ways. The objectives of the current study were to investigate how the adaptive expertise of a group of HPEs influenced perceived work perfor

Visual expertise induces changes in neural processing for many different domains of expertise. However, it is unclear how expertise effects for different domains of expertise are related. In the present fMRI study, we combine large-scale univariate and multi-voxel analyses to contrast the expertise-related neural changes associated with two different domains of expertise, bird expertise (ornithology) and mineral expertise (mineralogy). Results indicated distributed expertise-related neural changes, with effects for both domains of expertise in high-level visual cortex and effects for bird expe

Female high school athletes are an at-risk population for the Female Athlete Triad-a syndrome including low energy availability (with or without disordered eating), menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density. School nurses can play an important role in reducing the health burden of this syndrome, by educating coaches and athletes, and by referring symptomatic student-athletes to appropriate community resources for evaluation and treatment. This study assessed knowledge, attitudes, communication, and referral behaviors of U.S. high school nurses about the Female Athlete Triad. Particip

INTRODUCTION: Physicians do not always agree on "rules" governing behavior in professionally challenging situations. Little is known about contextual factors that influence physician approaches in these situations. We explored the individual-, social-, and societal-level factors that physicians consider when responding to 2 common professional dilemmas. We were particularly interested in knowing the extent to which physicians engage in self-reflection as a result of responding to the vignettes.
METHODS: A cross-sectional Web-based survey was sent to a random sample of 396 physicians, promptin

INTRODUCTION: Radiation therapy has seen enhancement of the radiation therapist (RT) role, with RTs and nurses performing duties that were traditionally in the radiation oncologist's (RO) domain. This study aimed to assess whether RTs can consistently grade radiation-induced skin toxicity and their concordance with the gradings given by ROs.
METHOD: Digital photographs of skin reactions were taken at weeks 1, 3 and 6 of radiotherapy on nine patients with breast cancer. The randomly ordered photographs were reviewed once by eight ROs and four RO registrars and on two occasions separated by 6 w

The purpose of this study was to test whether the construction workers have the tendency of engaging in risk compensation behaviours, and identify the demographic variables, which may influence the extent to which the construction workers may show risk compensation behaviours. Both quantitative (survey) and qualitative (interviews) approaches were used in this study. A questionnaire survey was conducted with all the construction workers on three building construction sites of a leading construction company in Australia. Semi-structured interviews were then conducted to validate the findings of

OBJECTIVE: To characterize variability in the identification of the macular center among retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) experts.
METHODS: A printed set of 25 wide-angle retinal images was compiled from infants at risk for ROP using a commercially available camera. Ten recognized ROP experts were asked to mark the macular center on each image. For each image, we measured the distance from the optic disc center to the marked macular center. Distances were standardized by normalizing the horizontal optic disc diameter in each image to 0.93 mm. In images with visible peripheral disease, interex

Teaching about domestic violence and racism is a formidable task that requires the inclusion of material that challenges dominant ideologies about race and gender. A recent training for police officers about domestic violence and racism serves as a good example of how challenging the task can be. Drawing from this 1-day police training, from existing pedagogical literature, and from the authors' collective experiences teaching about these issues, the authors address challenges encountered and propose strategies to mitigate them. The authors propose a multilevel approach to implementing strateg

To assess predictors of reported performance of screening clinical breast examination (CBE) by internists, family physicians, and obstetrician/gynecologists, we surveyed members of these specialties in four counties of Washington State. We contacted all physicians in the counties and identified 334 providers who saw women ages 50-75 and provided primary care as their principal activity. Seventy-five percent (252 of 334) responded. Physicians were mailed a survey and contacted for telephone completion if they did not respond in writing. The survey inquired about their current performance of CBE

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, at least 230 million girls and women are affected by female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C). FGM/C violates human rights and can cause irreparable harm and even lead to death. In 2022, more than 100,000 survivors of FGM/C lived in Germany, and more than 17,000 girls were considered at risk. Due to the increasing number, there is a need to improve the skills of professionals not only to treat FGM/C but also to prevent it, aiming to maintain or improve women's physical and mental health. However, previous studies mostly focused on health care providers, even though oth
