Perceptions of Housing and Shelter among People with Histories of Unstable Housing in three Cities in Canada: A Qualitative Study.

Housing is a key social determinant of health that contributes to the well-documented relationship between socioeconomic status and health. This study explored how individuals with histories of unstable and precarious housing perceive their housing or shelter situations, and the impact of these settings on their health and well-being. Participants were recruited from the Health and Housing in Transition study (HHiT), a longitudinal, multi-city study that tracked the health and housing status of people with unstable housing histories over a 5-year period. For the current study, one-time semi-st

Public understanding of cigarette smoke constituents: three US surveys.

INTRODUCTION: The Tobacco Control Act requires public disclosure of information about toxic constituents in cigarette smoke. To inform these efforts, we studied public understanding of cigarette smoke constituents. METHODS: We conducted phone surveys with national probability samples of adolescents (n=1125) and adults (n=5014) and an internet survey with a convenience sample of adults (n=4137), all in the USA. We assessed understanding of cigarette smoke constituents in general and of 24 specific constituents. RESULTS: Respondents commonly and incorrectly believed that harmful chemicals in c

Human Rabies - Wyoming and Utah, 2015.

In September 2015, a Wyoming woman was admitted to a local hospital with a 5-day history of progressive weakness, ataxia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Because of respiratory failure, she was transferred to a referral hospital in Utah, where she developed progressive encephalitis. On day 8 of hospitalization, the patient's family told clinicians they recalled that, 1 month before admission, the woman had found a bat on her neck upon waking, but had not sought medical care. The patient's husband subsequently had contacted county invasive species authorities about the incident, but he was not advis

Prescription opioid abuse: Problems and responses.

Prescription opioid abuse and addiction, along with consequences such as overdose death and increasing transition to heroin use, constitute a devastating public health problem in the United States. Increasingly it is clear that overprescription of these medications over the past two decades has been a major upstream driver of the opioid abuse epidemic. This commentary considers the factors that have led to overprescription of opioids by clinicians, discusses recent evidence casting doubt on the efficacy of opioids for treating chronic pain, and describes the ongoing efforts by federal and comm

Ebola virus disease in Africa: epidemiology and nosocomial transmission.

The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, primarily affecting Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, has exceeded all previous Ebola outbreaks in the number of cases and in international response. There have been 20 significant outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in Sub-Saharan Africa prior to the 2014 outbreak, the largest being that in Uganda in 2000, with 425 cases and a mortality of 53%. Since the first outbreaks in Sudan and Zaire in 1976, transmission within health facilities has been of major concern, affecting healthcare workers and acting as amplifiers of spread into the community. The lack of

[Controversies around vaccinations].

Controversies on vaccinations refer to two fundamentally different areas. The public contestation refers first of all to the objective need, efficiencies and the safety of vaccinations. Results of reliable research and their metaanalyses published over the recent years confirmed none of claimed by antivaccinists dispraise including causalities among the vaccination and the autism, autoimmune or allergic diseases. The second area, wherein one observes disagreements on the subject of vaccinations, is discussions on of the efficiency of each vaccine, schemata of vaccinations, or else economic adv

Pursuing protection from disease: the making of smallpox prophylactic practice in colonial Punjab.

Focusing on colonial Punjab, this article explores how agrarian lower-class families' pursuit of safe and effective protection from smallpox shaped the region's prophylactic practices during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Specifically, the article explains shifts from variolation in conjunction with Sitala (smallpox goddess) worship to vaccination in conjunction with Sitala worship; from vaccination with crusts to vaccination with human and animal lymph; and from vaccination with fresh lymph to vaccination with tubed lymph. The article also illustrates how, regardless of th

[Glanders, melioidosis and biowarfare].

MANY COMMON FACTORS: Glanders and melioidosis are infectious diseases that are caused by the bacteria of the Burkholderia species. These infections are endemic in tropical regions and can lead to la broad spectrum of common clinical manifestations. TWO PRINCIPLE CLINICAL FORMS: The most frequent clinical presentation is the pulmonary form, which can mimic pulmonary tuberculosis. The septicemic form is the most severe form, and lethal in nearly 50% of cases. WEAPONS FOR BIOTERRORISM AND WAR: Very few organisms are required to cause disease by aerosolisation, which could be the main route of con

Cardiac adverse events following smallpox vaccination--United States, 2003.

During January 24-March 21, smallpox vaccine was administered to 25,645 civilian health-care and public health workers in 53 jurisdictions as part of an effort to prepare the United States in the event of a terrorist attack using smallpox. Seven cases of cardiac adverse events have been reported among civilian vaccinees since the beginning of the smallpox vaccination program. In addition, 10 cases of myopericarditis have been reported among military vaccinees. This report summarizes data on the seven cases reported among civilians and provides background information on recent military vaccinee

Biological terrorism: understanding the threat, preparation, and medical response.

The thought of an outbreak of disease caused by the intentional release of a pathogen or toxin in an American city was alien just 10 years ago. Many people believed that biological warfare was only in the military's imagination, perhaps to be faced by soldiers on a far-away battlefield, if at all. The "anthrax letters" and the resulting deaths from inhalation anthrax have changed that perception. The national, state, and local governments in the United States are preparing for what is now called "not if, but when and how extensive" biological terrorism. In contrast to the acute onset and first

Ethics of male circumcision in minors: a scoping review of parental authority, adolescent involvement, and implications for sexual medicine practice and policy.

INTRODUCTION: Male circumcision in minors remains widely practiced in many regions of the world, although its prevalence varies considerably across cultural, religious, and geographic contexts. Beyond its medical dimensions, circumcision is closely linked to religion, culture, masculinity, family identity, and public health agendas. Ethical debates commonly involve tensions between parental authority, bodily autonomy, assent, and children's rights, particularly because minors are often minimally involved in decision-making processes. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted to examine ethical,

How Structural Compensation Facilitates Health Care for the Homeless. A Comparative View on Four European Union Member States.

There is robust evidence that homelessness and the associated life conditions of a homeless person may cause and exacerbate a wide range of health problems, while healthcare for the homeless is simultaneously limited in accessibility, availability, and appropriateness. This article investigates legal frameworks of health care provision, existing knowledge on numbers of homeless to be considered, and current means of health care provision for four EU countries with different economic and public health background: Austria, Greece, Poland, and Romania. National experts investigated the respective

Protecting Urban Health and Safety: Balancing Care and Harm in the Era of Mass Incarceration.

This paper explores theoretical, spatial, and mediatized pathways through which policing poses harms to the health of marginalized communities in the urban USA, including analysis of two recent and widely publicized incidents of officer-involved killings in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York. We examine the influence of the "broken windows" model in both policing and public health, revealing alternate institutional strategies for responding to urban disorder in the interests of the health and safety of the city. Drawing on ecosocial theory and medical anthropology, we consider the
