Effects of weight-bearing dance aerobics on lower limb muscle morphology, strength and functional fitness in older women.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the performance of sonoelastography (SE) in diagnosis and clinical evaluation of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). METHODS: SE examination of major salivary glands was conducted for 79 pSS patients, 39 disease controls and 15 healthy subjects. Elastographic images were determined with a qualitative 4-point scoring method. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was employed to evaluate the performance of the elasticity scoring method and the best cut-off value was determined. The associations between elasticity scores and disease characteristics were analysed to e

The effects of upper body blood flow restriction training on muscles located proximal to the applied occlusive pressure: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Blood flow restriction combined with low load resistance training (LL-BFRT) is associated with increases in upper limb muscle strength and size. The effect of LL-BFRT on upper limb muscles located proximal to the BFR cuff application is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the effect of LL-BFRT compared to low load, or high load resistance training (LL-RT, HL-RT) on musculature located proximal to cuff placement. METHODS: Six electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Two reviewers independently evaluated the risk

High-intensity interval aerobic and resistance training to counteract low relative lean soft tissue mass in middle age: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and function begins in early middle age, yet research to date has focused on older individuals, limiting our understanding of interventions earlier in the lifespan. To date, no high-intensity interval training studies have been conducted in middle-aged adults with low relative lean soft tissue mass. METHODS: Eighty-two middle-aged adults (40-50 years of age) with low appendicular lean soft tissue mass index confirmed with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were randomly allocated (1:1) to group-based, 20-week, three times a week, high-i

High school female basketball athletes exhibit decreased knee-specific choice visual-motor reaction time.

Weaker hamstrings muscular forces and lower ratio of the hamstrings/quadriceps muscular forces in female athletes have been identified as modifiable risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. However, sex differences in athletes' ability to react to visual cues (Choice Visual-Motor Reaction Time: VMRT) and to generate knee muscular forces (rate of force development: RFD) immediately following the visual cues were largely unknown. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine sex differences in Choice VMRT and RFD. A total of 50 high school basketball athletes (26F/24 M) p

Impaired Muscle Mitochondrial Biogenesis and Myogenesis in Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

IMPORTANCE: The important depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the general depression of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex levels (including complex II) have been confirmed, implying an increasing paucity of mitochondria in the muscle from patients with types I, II, and III spinal muscular atrophy (SMA-I, -II, and -III, respectively). OBJECTIVE: To investigate mitochondrial dysfunction in a large series of muscle biopsy samples from patients with SMA. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We studied quadriceps muscle samples from 24 patients with genetically documented SMA and paras…

Mechanomyography energy decreases during muscular fatigue in paraplegics.

The present work investigated the response of triaxial MMG signals acquired from the rectus femoris muscle of spinal cord injured volunteers during fatigue protocol electrically evoked. A custom functional electrical stimulator voltage-controlled was configured as: pulse frequency set to 1 kHz (20% duty cycle) and burst (modulating) frequency set to 70 Hz (20% active period). The triaxial MMG signal of rectus femoris muscle was processed with third-order 5-50 Hz bandpass Butterworth filter and the values were normalized. A load cell was used to register the force. The stimulator output voltage

Repeated Sprint Performance and Inter-Limb Asymmetry in Elite Female Sprinters: A Study of Lactate Dynamics and Lower Limb Muscle Activity.

Background: Repeated short maximal sprints induce high blood lactate concentrations and may influence neuromuscular coordination, but the relationship between lactate accumulation and inter-limb asymmetry in elite athletes remains unclear. Objectives: This study sought to investigate how blood lactate dynamics during repeated sprint efforts relate to sprint performance and inter-limb muscle asymmetry in elite female sprinters. Methods: Eight elite women (21.3 ± 5.4 y; 54.2 ± 5.1 kg; 165.4 ± 4.3 cm) performed four sets of five all-out 50 m sprints (1 min rest between reps; 5 min between sets).

Relaxation electromechanical delay of the quadriceps during selected movement velocities.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the time between the cessation of EMG activity and cessation of torque production, or relaxation electromechanical delay, (R-EMD) of the quadriceps at three angular movement velocities. A Biodex dynamometer passively moved the right knee of 25 males through a given range at three velocities (10, 60 and 120 degrees per second). Subjects were instructed to actively extend their knees to a visual target, then to immediately relax. Biodex torque and position data, as well as surface EMG from the right Vastus Medialis (VM), Rectus Femoris (RF) and Vastus La

Atypical presentation of GNE myopathy with asymmetric hand weakness.

GNE myopathy is a rare autosomal recessive muscle disease caused by mutations in GNE, the gene encoding the rate-limiting enzyme in sialic acid biosynthesis. GNE myopathy usually manifests in early adulthood with distal myopathy that progresses slowly and symmetrically, first involving distal muscles of the lower extremities, followed by proximal muscles with relative sparing of the quadriceps. Upper extremities are typically affected later in the disease. We report a patient with GNE myopathy who presented with asymmetric hand weakness. He had considerably decreased left grip strength, atroph

[An advanced case of myopathy and dementia with a new mutation in the valosin-containing protein gene].

We report a 51-year-old man with myopathy and dementia probably caused by a novel mutation of the valosin-containing protein (VCP) gene, in the form of a p.Ala439Pro substitution. At 43 years old, he presented at least 2-year history of weakness of right ankle dorsiflexion. Findings from muscle biopsy suggested distal myopathy with rimmed vacuoles. However, no mutation in the GNE gene was identified. He complained of giving way of the knee, and muscle imaging study showed adipose tissue infiltration in the quadriceps. Ten years later, he was confined to a wheelchair and became reticent and ant

Bronchial involvement in the cramp-fasciculation syndrome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cramp-fasciculation syndrome (CFS) is an acquired, chronic, usually benign and rather heterogeneous condition with isolated fasciculations and muscle cramps generally induced by physical exercise. They commonly involve calf and quadriceps muscles. The pathophysiology of CFS is related to peripheral nerve hyperexcitability, most often located at the motor nerve terminal or intramuscular arborization. METHODS: A 21-year-old man presented with a progressive syndrome of bronchospasm, cramps and muscle twitches related to physical exercise. Spirography showed bronchial hyperrespon…

ACE I/D genotype associates with strength in sarcopenic men but not with response to ACE inhibitor therapy in older adults with sarcopenia: Results from the LACE trial.

BACKGROUND: Angiotensin II (AII), has been suggested to promote muscle loss. Reducing AII synthesis, by inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity has been proposed as a method to inhibit muscle loss. The LACE clinical trial was designed to determine whether ACE inhibition would reduce further muscle loss in individuals with sarcopenia but suffered from low recruitment and returned a negative result. Polymorphic variation in the ACE promoter (I/D alleles) has been associated with differences in ACE activity and muscle physiology in a range of clinical conditions. This aim of this

Purulent myositis of the thigh as a presentation of perforated low rectal cancer.

Purulent myositis is an acute, intramuscular bacterial infection involving abscess formation most commonly affecting the quadriceps, hamstring and gluteal muscles. We present a case of extensive purulent myositis of the thigh and lower leg caused by bowel perforation below the peritoneal reflection secondary to rectal cancer. Cases of lower limb and perineal purulent myositis should raise suspicion of rectal perforation and should prompt investigations to exclude rectal malignancy.

Myositis ossificans traumatica of the neck - a pediatric case.

Myositis ossificans circumscripta (MOC) is an extra-osseous non- neoplastic growth of a new bone. It occurs most commonly in the second and the third decade of life, while it is rare in children. The etiology of MOC is unknown and the quadriceps and brachials are the most affected. The occurrence of traumatic MOC in tissues of the neck is uncommon. We are presenting below a rare case of traumatic myositis ossificans occurring in sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles in a 17-year-old girl.

Medial-pivot total knee arthroplasty is associated with reduced perceived difficulty during stair descent than conventional designs: A propensity-matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Implant design in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may influence knee stability and muscle demand during stair descent. However, comparative clinical data remain limited. This study compared postoperative stair-descent ability between medial-pivot (MP) TKA and conventional cruciate-retaining (CR) and posterior-stabilized (PS) TKA. METHODS: Female patients who underwent unilateral MP (EVOLUTION, MicroPort Orthopedics) or conventional CR/PS TKA (ATTUNE, DePuy Synthes) were retrospectively reviewed and propensity score-matched (1:1) for age, body mass index, and preoperative handgrip st
