Developmental effects of fractionated low-dose exposure to gamma radiation on behaviour and susceptibility of the cholinergic system in mice.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether neonatal exposure to fractionated external gamma radiation and co-exposure to radiation and nicotine can affect/exacerbate developmental neurotoxic effects, including altered behavior/cognitive function and the susceptibility of the cholinergic system in adult male mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Neonatal male Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice were irradiated with one 200 mGy fraction/day and/or exposed to nicotine (66 μg/kg b.w.) twice daily on postnatal day (PND) 10, 10-11, 10-12 or 10-13 (nicotine only). At 2 months of age the animals were tested for

Is the Linear No-Threshold Dose-Response Paradigm Still Necessary for the Assessment of Health Effects of Low Dose Radiation?

Inevitable human exposure to ionizing radiation from man-made sources has been increased with the proceeding of human civilization and conse … ncy among the available experimental data. We have reviewed an extensive literature on the low dose radiation effects in both radiation biology and epidemiology, and highlighted some of the controversies therein. This article could provide a reasonable view of utilizing radiation for human life and responding to the public questions about radiation risk. In additio …

Radiation-induced complications in endovascular neurosurgery: incidence of skin effects and the feasibility of estimating risk of future tumor formation.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of radiation-induced complications is increasingly part of the informed consent process for patients undergoing neuroendovascular procedures. Data guiding these discussions in the era of modern radiation-minimizing equipment is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the rates of skin and hair effects at a modern high-volume neurovascular center, and to assess the feasibility of accurately quantifying the risk of future central nervous system (CNS) tumor formation. METHODS: We reviewed a prospectively collected database of endovascular procedures performed at our institutio

Repeated low-dose ultraviolet (UV) B exposures of humans induce limited photoprotection against the immune effects of erythemal UVB radiation.

BACKGROUND: Exposure of human subjects to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation causes immunosuppression. Most experiments to date have not tested the effects of low daily doses of UVB radiation. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain whether photoprotection against several UV-induced immune effects might develop following repeated exposure. METHODS: Groups of approximately 30 healthy individuals were given whole-body UVB irradiation on each of 10 consecutive days with 0.7 minimal erythema dose, or whole-body irradiation as before followed by a single erythemal UVB dose on a small body area, or irradiated only wit

Tolerability and effects of two formulations of oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC; ACTIQ) in patients with radiation-induced oral mucositis.

BACKGROUND: Oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC; ACTIQ) incorporates fentanyl into a lozenge allowing drug delivery through the oral mucosa resulting in rapid pain relief. OTFC is effective for breakthrough pain and could be particularly useful in patients with mucositis. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, crossover study assessed two formulations of OTFC for tolerability in 14 patients with radiation-induced mucositis. On four separate days, patients with grade 3 or 4 mucositis received an OTFC unit 45 min before radiation treatment. Two units had a sweetened matrix formulation and

Long-term effects of radioprotector WR-2721 on locomotor activity and body weight of mice following exposure to ionizing radiation.

The effects of 13 Gy gamma-radiation alone and in combination with 200 mg/kg of the radioprotector S-2-(3-aminopropylamino)ethylphosphorothioic acid (WR-2721) on locomotor activity and body weight were examined in CD2F1 mice over a 10-month period. The results confirmed that WR-2721 is an excellent radioprotector against lethality. All mice receiving 13 Gy without WR-2721 died in 5-7 days. For mice that received WR-2721 alone or WR-2721 + radiation, survival at 30 days was 100% and 70%, respectively. Body weights of mice receiving WR-2721 without radiation were comparable to control animals. B

Effects of Tumor-like assay conditions, lonizing radiation, and hyperthermia on immune lysis of tumor cells by cytotoxic T-lymphocytes.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL's) harvested from mixed splenic lymphocyte cultures (DBA/2 + C57BL) were tested for their ability to lyse allogeneic P815 mastocytoma cells under various tumor-like assay conditions, with or without previous exposure to ionizing radiation or hyperthermia (43 degrees). There was little or no decrease of immune cytolysis when CTL's were assayed by 51Cr release under tumor-like conditions (plateau-phase target cells, low pH, or anoxia) or after irradiation, but cytolytic activity was greatly reduced when CTL's were exposed to heat; 45 min of hyperthermic treatment dec

The effects of cosmic particle radiation on pocket mice aboard Apollo XVII: appendix III. evaluation of viscera and other tissues.

Histopathological findings in the lungs, livers, bone marrows, small intestines, gonads, kidneys, and other tissues of the four pocket mice (Perognathus longimembris) that survived the Apollo XVII flight were evaluated in the light of their immediate environment and as targest of HZE cosmic ray particles. Results of this study failed to disclose changes that could be ascribed to the HZE particle radiation. Decreased numbers of erythropoietic cells in the bone marrow of the flight mice were probably related to the increased oxygen pressure. The small intestine showed no changes. Ovaries and tes

Androgen Flare after LHRH Initiation Is the Side Effect That Makes Most of the Beneficial Effect When It Coincides with Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.

Treatment of metastatic prostate cancer was historically performed via bilateral orchiectomy to achieve castration. An alternative to surgical castration is the administration of subcutaneous recombinant luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH). LHRH causes the pituitary gland to produce luteinizing hormone (LH), which results in synthesis and secretion of testosterone from the testicles. When LHRH levels are continuously high, the pituitary gland stops producing LH, which results in reduced testosterone production by the testicles. Long-acting formulations of LHRH were developed, and its

Safety and effectiveness of radioactive coil embolization of aneurysms: effects of radiation on recanalization, clot organization, neointima formation, and surrounding nerves in experimental models.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recanalization after coil embolization can be prevented by radiation emitted from 32P coils. We wanted to determine the upper limits of 32P activities that could be implanted onto coils with respect to the potential injury to nearby nerves, delay in organization of the clot, and effects on neointima formation and recanalization. METHODS: We studied the effects of various 32P activities on recanalization and organization of thrombus after coil occlusion of canine arteries and on neointima formation at the neck of canine carotid bifurcation aneurysms. We also tested pote

Effect of changes in baseline cancer mortality rates and survival functions on the estimated risks of radiation-induced cancer.

One of the uncertainty factors in estimating radiation-induced cancer risk is temporal changes in baseline cancer and all-cause mortality rates, which reflect advances in medical and diagnostic technologies, increased diagnostic frequency, and improvements in lifestyle, hygiene standards, and public health. Assessments of radiation-induced cancer risk have generally been performed using constant baseline data and therefore do not consider the effects of temporal changes in these data. To determine the effect of changes in baseline data on risk estimation, we calculated lifetime attributable ri

Abscopal Effect following Stereotactic Radiation Therapy to the Brain and Spleen in Metastatic Endometrial Cancer: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The abscopal effect of radiation therapy is a rare phenomenon in which immune activation induces the regression of distant, nonirradiated tumors. Recent studies have increasingly suggested that combining radiation therapy with immunotherapy may increase the occurrence rate of the abscopal effect. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 72-year-old woman with stage IA endometrial cancer. After surgery and adjuvant pelvic radiation therapy, oligometastases develop in the spleen and lungs. Subsequently, stereotactic body radiation therapy was initiated for the spleen; nonetheles

Analysing the suitability of tools used to assess cost-effectiveness of external beam radiation therapy - A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cost-effectiveness analyses (CEAs) guide decision-making in radiotherapy. Despite CEAs impact on policy and resource allocation, limited evidence exists on the current tools and methods for external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT). This review aims to identify the suitability of CEA tools utilised in modern EBRT economic evaluations. METHODS: This scoping review followed Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, with reporting aligned to the Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses for Scoping Reviews. A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus identified CEA studi

The Mitigating Effect of Melatonin Against Radiation-Induced Inflammation and Disturbance of Reproductive Hormones in Female Albino Rats.

Objectives: Melatonin has been documented as an antioxidant agent. Numerous investigations have documented melatonin's radioprotective impact; however, investigation of its role post-irradiation requires further studies. Thus, the present study investigated melatonin's mitigating effect against radiation-induced alteration in the ovaries and reproductive hormones in female albino rats. Methods: Melatonin (10 mg/kg body weight, i. p.) was administered to the animals for 7, 11, and 15 days after whole-body exposure to 4 Gy γ-radiation. Results: The results demonstrated that melatonin has signifi

The effect of far infrared radiation on maturation in arteriovenous fistulas in patients on hemodialysis: A randomized controlled, multicenter trial.

INTRODUCTION: Improved arteriovenous fistula (AVF) maturation is crucial for reducing the dependency on central venous catheters in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Far-infrared radiation (FIR) is a treatment modality that may enhance maturation and patency. The present trial examined the effect of FIR on newly placed AVFs. The hypothesis was that FIR treatment on the AVF would improve maturation and patency after 12 months compared to a control group. METHODS: Patients were randomized to receive FIR treatment or no FIR. After AVF placement, the FIR group received FIR on the skin of the
