Development of Low Radiation Dose Biomarkers: A Commentary on Whether Non-targeted Effects Need to Be Considered.

The issue of determining likely outcomes after low dose exposure to radiation is complex and controversial. Currently, the linear no-threshold (LNT) model is used to justify the linear extrapolation of (adverse) outcomes from high doses, where effects are clearly seen, to low doses, where effects are very difficult to detect and even more difficult to ascribe to the measured radiation exposure. Among the factors hindering the development of a more precise system are the lack of reliable predictors of system health. While biomarkers indicating the health of individual cells or organisms exist,

A role for ceruloplasmin in the control of human glioblastoma cell responses to radiation.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and most aggressive malignant brain tumor. In understanding its resistance to conventional treatments, iron metabolism and related pathways may represent a novel avenue. As for many cancer cells, GB cell growth is dependent on iron, which is tightly involved in red-ox reactions related to radiotherapy effectiveness. From new observations indicating an impact of RX radiations on the expression of ceruloplasmin (CP), an important regulator of iron metabolism, the aim of the present work was to study the functional effects of constitutive expressio

Leptin deficiency-induced obesity exacerbates ultraviolet B radiation-induced cyclooxygenase-2 expression and cell survival signals in ultraviolet B-irradiated mouse skin.

Obesity has been implicated in several inflammatory diseases and in different types of cancer. Chronic inflammation induced by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been implicated in various skin diseases, including melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. As the relationship between obesity and susceptibility to UV radiation-caused inflammation is not clearly understood, we assessed the role of obesity on UVB-induced inflammation, and mediators of this inflammatory response, using the genetically obese (leptin-deficient) mouse model. Leptin-deficient obese (ob/ob) mice and wild-type count

[An attempt to determine the variability of thermal phenotypes in monozygotic twins].

INTRODUCTION: All solid bodies emit electromagnetic radiation at temperatures above absolute zero. The radiation spectrum depends, among other factors, on temperature. Thermovision is a method in which an infrared camera is used to record infrared radiation (IR) emitted by human skin. It is widely used in medicine, for instance to diagnose inflammation of the skin, some types of neoplasms, collagenosis, and peripheral vascular disease. The literature, however, lacks reports on the variability in thermal emission by the skin of healthy individuals or twins. Interpretation of the results is base

Heterogeneity of chromosome damage in beta-thalassaemia traits. An evaluation of spontaneous and gamma-ray-induced micronuclei and chromosome aberrations in lymphocytes in vitro after G0 and G2 phase irradiation.

This study is an attempt to evaluate the chromosomal radiosensitivity of beta-thalassaemia traits compared with healthy individuals from the general population, necessitated by the fact that beta-thalassaemia trait is present in 1-17% of different population groups in India and the chances of encountering them in radiation and chemical related industries do exist. Spontaneous chromosome aberration frequencies in peripheral blood lymphocytes from beta-thalassaemia traits were found to be in the normal range, whereas significantly higher frequencies of micronuclei (MN) were observed in thalassae

[Risk factors associated with neonatal tumors. Experience of a pediatric environmental health specialty unit in Valencia (Spain)].

BACKGROUND: Neonatal tumors (NT) result from a variable combination of constitutional and environmental determinants. Multiple risk factors (RF) are involved in their development, although most are unknown. OBJECTIVE: To document the constitutional, environmental, preconceptional and transplacental RF associated with the development of NT with greater or lesser scientific evidence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated known RF in NT diagnosed at La Fe University Children's Hospital from January 1990 to December 1999, using a questionnaire completed by parents in a personal interview, either

Linear Plasmids in Micrococcus: Insights Into a Common Ancestor and Transfer by Conjugation.

Actinobacteria have frequently been reported in the Andean Puna, including strains of the genus Micrococcus. These strains demonstrate resistance to high levels of UV radiation, arsenic, and multiple antibiotics, and possess large linear plasmids. A comparative analysis of the sequences and putative functions of these plasmids was conducted. The presence of large regions with high sequence identity (exceeding 30 kb in total) in all three studied Micrococcus megaplasmids indicates a clear evolutionary link among these elements. Genes related to essential plasmid functions were primarily found w

Multiple Keratoacanthomas Associated with Genetic Syndromes: Narrative Review and Proposal of a Diagnostic Algorithm.

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a relatively common, fast-growing epithelial tumour, with characteristic behaviour and clinical variability. Although it appears as a solitary lesion in a majority of cases, multiple KAs do occur, secondary to skin exposure to ultraviolet radiation, chemical carcinogens or certain medications, but may also be associated with various genetic syndromes. Thus, multiple KAs may serve as an early clinical alarm sign. Prompt diagnosis of the underlying cause and identification of the mechanism of development are critical for the secondary prevention of associated organ disord

Review of the comparative pathological and immunohistochemical features of human and canine cutaneous melanocytic neoplasms.

Melanocytic neoplasms originate from melanocytes and melanoma, the malignant form, is a common canine neoplasm and the most aggressive human skin cancer. Despite many similarities between these neoplasms in both species, only a limited number of studies have approached these entities in a comparative manner. Therefore, this review compares benign and malignant melanocytic neoplasms in dogs and humans, exclusively those arising in the haired skin, with regard to their clinicopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular aspects. Shared features include spontaneous occurrence, macroscopic feat

In vitro chromosomal radiosensitivity in patients with common variable immunodeficiency.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is one of the predominant antibody deficiency disorders, some evidence of which indicates that chromosome instability is present in these patients. An increased risk of cancer in patients with CVID has been documented. This study was undertaken to highlight radiation sensitivity in CVID patients and to clarify the genetic basis of this defect in these cases. Stimulated lymphocytes of the studied subjects were exposed to low-dose gamma-rays in the G2 phase or the G0 phase of the cell cycle and chromosomal aberrations were scored. Lymphocytes of healthy in

Genome sequencing of Metrosideros polymorpha (Myrtaceae), a dominant species in various habitats in the Hawaiian Islands with remarkable phenotypic variations.

Whole genome sequences, which can be provided even for non-model organisms owing to high-throughput sequencers, are valuable in enhancing the understanding of adaptive evolution. Metrosideros polymorpha, a tree species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands, occupies a wide range of ecological habitats and shows remarkable polymorphism in phenotypes among/within populations. The biological functions of genetic variations observed within this species could provide significant insights into the adaptive radiation found in a single species. Here de novo assembled genome sequences of M. polymorpha are pr

Moyamoya disease associated with asymptomatic mosaic Turner syndrome: a rare cause of hemorrhagic stroke.

Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular anomaly involving the intracranial carotid arteries that can present clinically with either ischemic or hemorrhagic disease. Moyamoya syndrome, indistinguishable from moyamoya disease at presentation, is associated with multiple clinical conditions including neurofibromatosis type 1, autoimmune disease, prior radiation therapy, Down syndrome, and Turner syndrome. We present the first reported case of an adult patient with previously unrecognized mosaic Turner syndrome with acute subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage as the initial manifestation of

Understanding and determining the etiology of autism.

Worldwide, the rate of autism has been steadily rising. There are several environmental factors in concert with genetic susceptibilities that are contributing to this rise. Impaired methylation and mutations of mecp2 have been associated with autistic spectrum disorders, and related Rett syndrome. Genetic polymorphisms of cytochrome P450 enzymes have also been linked to autism, specifically CYP27B1 that is essential for proper vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin D is important for neuronal growth and neurodevelopment, and defects in metabolism or deficiency have been implicated in autistic individua

Selection for increased desiccation resistance in Drosophila melanogaster: additive genetic control and correlated responses for other stresses.

Previously we found that Drosophila melanogaster lines selected for increased desiccation resistance have lowered metabolic rate and behavioral activity levels, and show correlated responses for resistance to starvation and a toxic ethanol level. These results were consistent with a prediction that increased resistance to many environmental stresses may be genetically correlated because of a reduction in metabolic energy expenditure. Here we present experiments on the genetic basis of the selection response and extend the study of correlated responses to other stresses. The response to selecti

Optic nerve sheath meningiomas harbor distinct genetic variants.

OBJECTIVE: Both primary optic nerve sheath meningiomas (pONSMs) and secondary optic nerve sheath meningiomas (sONSMs) pose clinical challenges because standard treatments such as surgical debulking and radiation therapy can further damage the optic nerve, producing permanent visual loss. The molecular pathology of primary skull base meningiomas is becoming clearer. However, by comparison, pONSMs and sONSMs have not been studied adequately with contemporary high-throughput molecular genetic techniques, which is the primary aim of this study. This is a crucial issue because these tumors may harb

Melanin Biopolymers in Pharmacology and Medicine-Skin Pigmentation Disorders, Implications for Drug Action, Adverse Effects and Therapy.

Melanins are biopolymeric pigments formed by a multi-step oxidation process of tyrosine in highly specialized cells called melanocytes. Melanin pigments are mainly found in the skin, iris, hair follicles, and inner ear. The photoprotective properties of melanin biopolymers have been linked to their perinuclear localization to protect DNA, but their ability to scavenge metal ions and antioxidant properties has also been noted. Interactions between drugs and melanins are of clinical relevance. The formation of drug-melanin complexes can affect both the efficacy of pharmacotherapy and the occurre

The Role of Environmental Factors in the Development of Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies: a Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to evaluate recent findings on the role of environmental factors in the development and clinical presentation of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs). RECENT FINDINGS: A targeted literature review was conducted to identify reports relevant to the association between environmental factors and IIMs published over the past three years. There has been an increasing number of publications dealing with the association of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection or vaccination with the development of IIMs, highlighting the signif

Considerations about the Geographic Distribution of Histoplasma Species.

Histoplasmosis is a mycotic infection principally affecting pulmonary tissue; sometimes, histoplasmosis can progress into a systemic disease. This infection involves immunocompetent and immunosuppressed human and other mammalian hosts, depending on particular circumstances. Histoplasmosis infection has been documented worldwide. The infection is acquired by inhaling infective mycelial propagules of the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. New reports of clinical cases of histoplasmosis in extreme latitudes could be related to human social adaptations and climate changes in the world, which
