The contribution of high-resolution multiplanar reformats of the skull base to the detection of skull-base fractures.

AIM: To investigate the contribution of routine review of submillimetric multiplanar reformats to the diagnosis of skull-base fractures. METHODS: A prospective analysis was performed of 407 cases referred over a 6-month period for CT of the skull following cranial trauma. The reformatted 5-mm axial sections and subsequently the high-resolution multiplanar reformats (HRMPRs) were viewed on an ADW 4.1 workstation using bone windows and algorithm. All skull-base fractures and related features, recorded by the consensus of two radiologists, were classified as anatomically significant or non-signi

Deep learning image reconstruction for low-kiloelectron volt virtual monoenergetic images in abdominal dual-energy CT: medium strength provides higher lesion conspicuity.

BACKGROUND: The best settings of deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm for abdominal low-kiloelectron volt (keV) virtual monoenergetic imaging (VMI) have not been determined. PURPOSE: To determine the optimal settings of the DLIR algorithm for abdominal low-keV VMI. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The portal-venous phase computed tomography (CT) scans of 109 participants with 152 lesions were reconstructed into four image series: VMI at 50 keV using adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (Asir-V) at 50% blending (AV-50); and VMI at 40 keV using AV-50 and DLIR at medium (DLIR-M) an

Mesenteric lymph nodes in children: what is normal?

BACKGROUND: Enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN) are frequently seen in children with abdominal pain and, in the absence of other disorders, have been attributed to primary mesenteric lymphadenitis. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of enlarged MLN (short axis>or=5 mm) as detected by abdominal CT in children with a low likelihood for mesenteric lymphadenopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During a 14-month period, we identified all non-contrast abdominal CT examinations performed at a tertiary care pediatric hospital for evaluation of suspected or known renal stones. Two radiologists reviewe

Quantitative evaluation and comparison of coronary artery characteristics by 3D coronary volume reconstruction.

Non-atherosclerotic abnormalities of vessel calibre, aneurysm and ectasia, are challenging to quantify and are often overlooked in qualitative reporting. Utilising a novel 3-dimensional (3D) quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) application, we have evaluated the characteristics of normal, diabetic and aneurysmal or ectatic coronary arteries. We selected 131 individuals under 50 years-of-age, who had undergone coronary angiography for suspected myocardial ischaemia between 1st January 2011 and 31st December 2015, at the Bristol Heart Institute, Bristol, UK. This included 42 patients with ang

Shape and Scale in Quantifying Aortic Morphology Evolution and Chronicity.

PURPOSE: Decision-making in thoracic aortic disease primarily relies on diameter thresholds that compress rich three-dimensional morphology into a single length scale. Intrinsic shape measures have been shown to complement diameter, but their utility depends critically on the observation scale imposed during quantification. We aim to identify scales at which a size-invariant shape descriptor, specifically the normalized fluctuation in total integrated Gaussian curvature δ K ~ , most robustly captures thoracic aortic disease state and to relate the tuned δ K ~ signal to clinically relevant

Reading, Fast and Slow: Characterizing Radiologists' Visual Search Through Abdominal CT for Detecting Hepatic Metastases.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggest that "drilling" (eyes fixated at one location within a slice while scrolling rapidly between computed tomography (CT) slices) may be more effective than "scanning" (eyes move rapidly to search within each slice while scrolling slowly between slices) for detecting lesions, but evidence has been limited. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between sensitivity and either drilling or scanning for liver metastasis detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five radiologists blinded to clinical and previous imaging information mar

Co-clinical CT radiomics pipeline to establish candidate imaging biomarkers for colorectal cancer.

Here, we establish a co-clinical computed tomography (CT) radiomics pipeline for the identification of candidate imaging biomarkers in RAS-mutant metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Orthotopic KRAS-mutant xenograft models (LOVO-Luc2 (N = 52) and SW480-Luc2 (N = 52)) were treated with standard-of-care regimens (FOLFOX, bevacizumab, or combination) and longitudinally imaged by CT (N = 104 tumour scans, N = 156 liver scans collected over 4 timepoints). Radiomic features derived from primary tumour and liver parenchyma were assessed as biomarkers of treatment sensitivity and early metastatic dise

A radiomics-driven approach for predicting response to induction therapy in multiple myeloma: Leveraging CT-based delta features.

OBJECTIVE: This work established and validated a radiomics-driven framework to quantify therapeutic response in multiple myeloma (MM). By leveraging CT-based Delta features, we aimed to delineate sub-visual temporal changes and assess their incremental predictive value beyond conventional clinical biomarkers. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 131 newly diagnosed MM patients (April 2019-November 2024), partitioned into training and validation cohorts (7:3 ratio). Baseline and post-induction CT images (mean interval: 132 days), reconstructed via high-resolution sharp kernels, served as the

Quantification of hepatic steatosis on post-contrast computed tomography scans using artificial intelligence tools.

PURPOSE: Early detection of steatotic liver disease (SLD) is critically important. In clinical practice, hepatic steatosis is frequently diagnosed using computed tomography (CT) performed for unrelated clinical indications. An equation for estimating magnetic resonance proton density fat fraction (MR-PDFF) using liver attenuation on non-contrast CT exists, but no equivalent equation exists for post-contrast CT. We sought to (1) determine whether an automated workflow can accurately measure liver attenuation, (2) validate previously identified optimal thresholds for liver or liver-spleen attenu

Artificial intelligence for the detection of airway nodules in chest CT scans.

OBJECTIVES: Incidental airway tumors are rare and can easily be overlooked on chest CT, especially at an early stage. Therefore, we developed and assessed a deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) system for detecting and localizing airway nodules. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At a single academic hospital, we retrospectively analyzed cancer diagnoses and radiology reports from patients who received a chest or chest-abdomen CT scan between 2004 and 2020 to find cases presenting as airway nodules. Primary cancers were verified through bronchoscopy with biopsy or cytologic testing. The malig

Coronary computed tomography angiography without ECG leads; A feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Modern CT scanners with wide coverage and high temporal resolution have enabled robust coronary CT angiography (CCTA) with automated phase selection and motion correction algorithms, even at high heart rates and arrhythmia. We hypothesized that these advanced technologies may make it feasible to perform a CCTA without triggering from a patient's ECG signal. METHODS: Forty-three subjects undergoing clinically indicated CCTA were prospectively enrolled. ECG-less CCTA data was acquired for approximately the whole cardiac cycle using a wide-coverage scanner with fast gantry rotation (

Prediction of Radiation Therapy Induced Cardiovascular Toxicity from Pretreatment CT Images in Patients with Thoracic Malignancy via an Optimal Biomarker Approach.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular toxicity is a well-known complication of thoracic radiation therapy (RT), leading to increased morbidity and mortality, but existing techniques to predict cardiovascular toxicity have limitations. Predictive biomarkers of cardiovascular toxicity may help to maximize patient outcomes. METHODS: The machine learning optimal biomarker (OBM) method was employed to predict development of cardiotoxicity (based on serial echocardiographic measurements of left ventricular ejection fraction and longitudinal strain) from computed tomography (CT) images in patient

An Analysis of the Efficacy of Deep Learning-Based Pectoralis Muscle Segmentation in Chest CT for Sarcopenia Diagnosis.

Sarcopenia is the loss of skeletal muscle function and mass and is a poor prognostic factor. This condition is typically diagnosed by measuring skeletal muscle mass at the L3 level. Chest computed tomography (CT) scans do not include the L3 level. We aimed to determine if these scans can be used to diagnose sarcopenia and thus guide patient management and treatment decisions. This study compared the ResNet-UNet, Recurrent Residual UNet, and UNet3 + models for segmenting and measuring the pectoralis muscle area in chest CT images. A total of 4932 chest CT images were collected from 1644 patient

Improving assessment of lesions in longitudinal CT scans: a bi-institutional reader study on an AI-assisted registration and volumetric segmentation workflow.

PURPOSE: AI-assisted techniques for lesion registration and segmentation have the potential to make CT-based tumor follow-up assessment faster and less reader-dependent. However, empirical evidence on the advantages of AI-assisted volumetric segmentation for lymph node and soft tissue metastases in follow-up CT scans is lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the efficiency, quality, and inter-reader variability of an AI-assisted workflow for volumetric segmentation of lymph node and soft tissue metastases in follow-up CT scans. Three hypotheses were tested: (H1) Assessment time for follo
