BACKGROUND: Scrapie is a chronic neurodegenerative disease affecting small ruminants and belongs to the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. Scrapie is considered a serious animal disease and it has been notifiable in Norway since 1965. The clinical signs of scrapie might be vague and the farmers, if familiar with the signs of scrapie, are often in the best position for detecting scrapie suspects. In 2002, an anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted in order to assess Norwegian sheep farmers' vigilance of scrapie.

The efficacy of Mirazid (Commiphora molmol or Myrrh) was evaluated in sheep naturally infected with fascioliasis. Total doses of one or two capsules (300 mg each) were given for one, two or three successive days on an empty stomach an hour before breakfast. A total dose of 600 mg gave a cure rate of 83.3%, while a total dose of 900 to 1200 mg gave a complete cure rate (100%), with no clinical side effect. The cure rate was achieved by stool examination and/or macroscopically on slaughtering the sheep. Mirazid proved to be safe and very effective in sheep fascioliasis in Gharbia Governorate.

Glutathione S-transferase in Fasciola gigantica (FgGST) was isolated by affinity chromatography, by which highly purified enzyme was obtained. A case of Q fever in a sheep producer was detected by a surveillance system in North Dakota in 1993, when Q fever was not reportable. This is the first officially documented case in the state. To estimate the prevalence of Coxiella burnetii infection and identify associated risk factors, we conducted a study covering the whole state.
