TwinAIR health study: protocol for a European multi-centred, longitudinal study on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) related health and well-being.

BACKGROUND: The term indoor environmental quality (IEQ) encompasses indoor air quality (IAQ), temperature, humidity, noise, and light. As people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, at work, school, home, or during travel, understanding the relationship between IEQ and health is essential for health promotion, disease prevention, and sustainable building design and management. As part of the EU-funded TwinAIR project, the TwinAIR health study is a multi-centered, longitudinal investigation of how IEQ factors influence health and well-being across diverse European indoor spaces. Borreliosis and doxycycline treatment disrupt gut microbiota and immune responses in nonhuman primates.

Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) is the spirochete that causes Lyme disease (LD). Transmission to humans occurs via bites of infected Ixodes spp. ticks. Doxycycline is often used to treat LD patients, which is sometimes delayed due to current diagnostic challenges. Recently, several lines of evidence show dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in LD patients, which may be a host factor contributing to pathogenesis and symptomology but is still an understudied area in the field. To address this knowledge gap, we longitudinally compared the immune response and gut microbial composition of Japanese macaques af

Postoperative infections after non-elective cesarean section - a retrospective cohort study of prevalence and risk factors at a single center in Denmark administering prophylactic antibiotics after cord clamping.

BACKGROUND: Mothers giving birth by non-elective cesarean section have considerably higher risk of developing postoperative infection, than mothers giving birth by elective cesarean section. Meta-analyses have shown that the risk of infection is reduced when administering antibiotics at least 30 min prior to skin incision rather than after cord clamping. If given prior to incision, antibiotics are present in the neonatal bloodstream for up to 24 h after delivery, with early exposure to antibiotics potentially disturbing development of the gut microbiome. We aimed to retrospectively assess the

Bacterial communities in Haemaphysalis, Dermacentor and Amblyomma ticks collected from wild boar of an Orang Asli Community in Malaysia.

Ticks are hematophagous vectors of arthropod-borne disease agents globally. In Malaysia, despite seroprevalence studies indicating the presence of tick-borne diseases among the indigenous people, the etiological agents of these diseases are still unclear. These indigenous people, also known as the Orang Asli, still live in forested areas with frequent contact with wildlife. Wild boar are ubiquitously found in the forested areas where the Orang Asli communities are located and are commonly hunted as a food supplement. In this study, we aim to determine the tick species parasitizing wild boar fr

Lactobacillus paracasei KBL382 administration attenuates atopic dermatitis by modulating immune response and gut microbiota.

Administration of probiotics has been linked to immune regulation and changes in gut microbiota composition, with effects on atopic dermatitis (AD). In this study, we investigated amelioration of the symptoms of AD using Lactobacillus paracasei KBL382 isolated from the feces of healthy Koreans. Mice with Dermatophagoides farinae extract (DFE)-induced AD were fed 1 × 109 CFU d-1 of L. paracasei KBL382 for 4 weeks. Oral administration of L. paracasei KBL382 significantly reduced AD-associated skin lesions, epidermal thickening, serum levels of immunoglobulin E, and immune cell infiltration. L. p

Nutrition and Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by accelerated tumor necrosis factor-α/interleukin-23/interleukin-17 axis, hyperproliferation and abnormal differentiation of epidermal keratinocytes. Psoriasis patients are frequently associated with obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular diseases, or inflammatory bowel diseases. Psoriasis patients often show unbalanced dietary habits such as higher intake of fat and lower intake of fish or dietary fibers, compared to controls. Such dietary habits might be related to the incidence and severity of psoriasis. Nutrition infl

Maturation of the infant microbiome community structure and function across multiple body sites and in relation to mode of delivery.

Human microbial communities are characterized by their taxonomic, metagenomic and metabolic diversity, which varies by distinct body sites and influences human physiology. However, when and how microbial communities within each body niche acquire unique taxonomical and functional signatures in early life remains underexplored. We thus sought to determine the taxonomic composition and potential metabolic function of the neonatal and early infant microbiota across multiple body sites and assess the effect of the mode of delivery and its potential confounders or modifiers. A cohort of pregnant wo

The MITRE trial protocol: a study to evaluate the microbiome as a biomarker of efficacy and toxicity in cancer patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome is implicated as a marker of response to  immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) based on preclinical mouse models and preliminary observations in limited patient series. Furthermore, early studies suggest faecal microbial transfer may have therapeutic potential, converting ICI non-responders into responders. So far, identification of specific responsible bacterial taxa has been inconsistent, which limits future application. The MITRE study will explore and validate a microbiome signature in a larger scale prospective study across several different cancer types. MET

Zhuhuang Granules alleviate psoriatic inflammation via restoring gut microbiota balance and enhancing intestinal barrier integrity.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by excessive keratinocyte proliferation, immune dysregulation, and systemic inflammation. Emerging evidences highlight the gut-skin axis as a key regulatory mechanism linking gut microbiota dysbiosis to psoriasis pathogenesis. This study investigates the therapeutic effects of Zhuhuang Granules (ZH) on psoriasis, focusing on cutaneous inflammation, intestinal barrier integrity, and gut microbiota homeostasis. Using an imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis-like dermatitis mouse model, ZH treatment significantly reduced Psoriasis Area a

Integrating bioinformatic prediction and the "gut microbiota-inflammation-skin axis" to decipher the mechanisms of quercetin (from Evodia rutaecarpa) in diabetic wound healing.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a serious complication of diabetes with impaired healing. This study focused on the herbal medicine Evodia rutaecarpa as a case to investigate the mechanisms of diabetic wound healing via the "gut microbiota-inflammation-skin axis". We specifically aimed to elucidate the role of its core bioactive flavonoid, quercetin (Que), whose therapeutic potential in this context remains underexplored. METHODS: In vitro, the direct interaction between Que and HIF1α was assessed by cellular thermal shift assay, and its functional effect on the HIF1α/VEGF pathway wa

Culture Positivity Reflects Quantitative Bacterial Bioburden in Open Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Infection following high-energy open fractures remains a major challenge. Open fractures are exposed to environmental and skin pathogens, which, along with traumatized tissue and implanted hardware, create a favorable environment for infection. 24-83% of open fractures yield positive culture results. Despite culture-positive wounds being at higher risk for infection, culture data are rarely used in clinical decision-making. Culture-positivity in open fractures is believed to indicate higher wound bioburden, but this hypothesis remains unconfirmed. This study aimed to correlate cult

Streamlined extraction of nucleic acids and metabolites from low- and high-biomass samples using isopropanol and matrix tubes.

UNLABELLED: An essential aspect of population-based research is collecting samples outside of a clinical setting. This is crucial because microbial populations are highly dynamic, varying significantly across hosts, environments, and time points, a variability that clinical sample collection alone cannot fully capture. At-home sample collection enables the inclusion of a larger and more diverse group of participants, accounting for differences in ethnicity, age, and other factors. However, managing large studies is challenging due to the complexities involved in sample acquisition, processing,

The effects of ketogenic metabolic therapy on mental health and metabolic outcomes in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder: a randomized controlled clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and bipolar affective disorder are debilitating psychiatric conditions characterized by a chronic pattern of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive disturbances. Shared psychopathology includes the pre-eminence of altered affective states, disorders of thoughts, and behavioral control. Additionally, those conditions share epidemiological traits, including significant cardiovascular, metabolic, infectious, and respiratory co-morbidities, resulting in reduced life expectancy of up to 25 years. Nutritional ketosis has been successfully used to tr

Probiotics suppress LL37 generated rosacea-like skin inflammation by modulating the TLR2/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway.

Rosacea, a chronic inflammatory dermatological condition, is characterized by facial erythema and pustules. Recent investigations have delved into the interplay between the gut microbiota and rosacea pathogenesis, unveiling promising avenues for therapeutic intervention. In this study, we screened and isolated strains Ligilactobacillus salivarius 23-006 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 23-008 from the feces of healthy volunteers and evaluated the intervention effects of probiotics on rosacea by constructing an LL37 induced rosacea-like mouse model. Our results showed that both L. salivarius 23

Comprehensive, multisystem, mechanical decolonization of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus and Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriacease without the use of antibiotics.

Among multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs), Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have become major nosocomial pathogens that are endemic worldwide. If VRE/CRE are present as colonizing organisms but do not act as pathogens, these organisms do not cause symptoms and do not require antibiotic use. However, once gastrointestinal colonization with VRE/CRE occurs, it can persist for long periods and serve as a reservoir for transmission to other patients. Therefore, a breakthrough strategy to control the spread of MDRO colonization is needed. W

Genetics and Genomics of Infectious Diseases in Key Aquaculture Species.

Diseases pose a significant and pressing concern for the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector, particularly as their impact continues to grow due to climatic shifts such as rising water temperatures. While various approaches, ranging from biosecurity measures to vaccines, have been devised to combat infectious diseases, their efficacy is disease and species specific and contingent upon a multitude of factors. The fields of genetics and genomics offer effective tools to control and prevent disease outbreaks in aquatic animal species. In this study, we present the key findings from
