We describe a girl with cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma on the buttock. The 16-year-old girl had a 2.5- x 1.5-cm subcutaneous tumor on the right buttock, which was slightly tender. The tumor appeared to be vascular and was, therefore, surgically excised. Histologically, the lesion was poorly circumscribed and was composed of differently sized blood vessels, smooth-muscle bundles, and mature adipose tissue. These histologic findings were consistent with those of angiomyolipoma, which commonly occurs in the kidney. Cutaneous angiomyolipoma, which is also known as cutaneous angiolipoleiomyoma, is a

Microscopic appearances of spindle cell tumors of the gastrointestinal tract are suggestive of smooth muscle origin; however, they usually lack specific muscle cell features by electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry, thus justifying their designation as stromal tumors. The present report describes nine cases of small intestinal stromal tumors with eosinophilic stromal globules composed of tangles of curved fibers with crossbands simulating an appearance of skeins, designated as skeinoid fibers. Patients' ages ranged from 28 to 87 years; and four were male. The tumors presented as well-de

In this study we analyzed the clinicopathologic features of duodenal smooth muscle or stromal tumors, including 156 GISTs, 6 leiomyomas (LMs), and 5 leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology and the Haartman Institute of the University of Helsinki. GISTs were documented as KIT positive (n = 109); 47 tumors were also included because of their histologic identity to KIT-positive cases. GIST-specific c-kit gene mutations were documented in exon 11 in 9 of 30 cases (30%) and exon 9 in 4 of 30 cases (13%). The GISTs occurred in patients with an age range of 10

Angioleiomyomas are rare, benign, smooth muscle tumors that occur predominantly in the lower limbs and infrequently in the upper limbs. We present a case of angioleiomyoma arising from the distal ulnar artery, presenting as a painful lesion with a 20-year history of diagnostic uncertainty. It was preoperatively misdiagnosed as an ulnar artery aneurysm. Surgical excision with primary end-to-end arterial repair was performed. Histopathological examination confirmed features consistent with a leiomyoma arising from the distal ulnar artery wall. The patient became asymptomatic following the surger…

Leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) are malignant tumors of smooth muscles accounting for 5-6% of all soft tissue sarcomas. They are mostly seen in the gastrointestinal tractus, the uterus, and the retroperitoneum. Soft tissue sarcomas comprise <1% of all laryngeal malignancies, most of which are chondrosarcomas. Laryngeal LMSs are rarely seen malignancies, which are published as case reports. We presented a case of laryngeal LMS, which was seen 4 years later in a laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma patient who underwent laryngeal laser microsurgery. We discussed the diagnosis and treatment algorithm in the

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm. It is common in children and has been reported in various locations throughout the body but rarely in the rectum. A 13-month-old girl presented with a short history of a painless anal mass and no hematochezia. The mass was completely excised, and histologic examination of the initial biopsy showed fascicles of spindle cells in a mixed inflammatory background with predominance of plasma cells, typical of an inflammatory pseudotumor. The spindle cells were positive for smooth muscle actin and anaplastic lymphoma kinase staining. There

Although typically presenting renally, angiomyolipomas can rarely present in the skin. The tumors are composed of an admixture of blood vessels, smooth muscle and adipose tissue and are often seen in the setting of tuberous sclerosis. We describe a case of angiomyolipoma presenting on the thigh of a 50-year-old white female. This is the 17th reported case of cutaneous angiomyolipoma. As with all previously described cases, our patient did not present with the stigmata of tuberous sclerosis. Angiomyolipoma should be considered within the differential for subcutaneous nodules and work-up for tub

Pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma (PRMS) is a rare and controversial tumor of skeletal muscle phenotype. Diagnostic criteria for PRMS by combined histology and currently available immunohistochemistry have not been clearly defined. We report 38 pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcomas in adults, explore morphologic variants, and discuss our experience with both specific and nonspecific skeletal muscle markers in these tumors. Clinical data, morphology, and immunohistochemistry were reviewed. Electron microscopy was performed. Of 38 cases, there were 28 males and 10 females. Patient ages ranged from 21 to 81 y

BACKGROUND: Angiomyolipoma (AML) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor, originating from perivascular epithelioid cells (PECs), composed of smooth muscle, fat, and thick-walled blood vessels, most often found in the kidney. Uterine AML is exceptionally rare, with under 40 cases reported worldwide and 3 from India prior to the present case. Unlike renal AMLs, uterine lesions are typically sporadic and not linked to tuberous sclerosis (TS), which, combined with their resemblance to fibroids, makes preoperative diagnosis challenging.

Ovarian leiomyomas, either primary or parasitic in origin, are exceptionally rare and account for about 0.5% to 1% of all benign ovarian tumors. They often pose a diagnostic challenge, particularly in postmenopausal women, as they can clinically and radiologically mimic ovarian malignancy. Histopathological confirmation remains essential, and complete surgical excision yields an excellent prognosis. To our knowledge, the present report represents one of the few reported cases of primary ovarian leiomyoma in a postmenopausal woman from Sub-Saharan Africa. We report a case of primary ovarian lei

Primary breast leiomyosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal malignancy, thought to arise from smooth muscle elements of the nipple-areolar complex, vascular structures, or stromal tissue. Owing to its low incidence, current knowledge is largely derived from isolated case reports and small case series. Patients typically present with a painless, gradually enlarging breast mass, while imaging findings are often non-specific, posing diagnostic challenges. Definitive diagnosis relies on histopathological evaluation supplemented by immunohistochemistry (IHC) to differentiate it from other spindle cell neop

OBJECTIVE: Infection triggers inflammation that, in turn, enhances the expression of contractile-associated factors in myometrium and increases the risk of preterm delivery. In this study, we assessed vitamin D regulation of inflammatory markers, contractile-associated factors, steroid hormone receptors, and NFκB pathway proteins in human uterine myometrial smooth muscle (UtSM) cells that were cultured in an inflammatory environment.
STUDY DESIGN: Inflammatory environment was simulated for UtSM cells by coculturing them with monocyte lineage (THP1) cells. We measured the expression of inflamm

Soft tissue myoepithelial tumors of the head and neck region are very rare, and only one case of soft tissue myoepithelial tumor occurring in the masticator space has been reported in the world literature. A case of soft tissue myoepithelial tumor with benign histomorphology, but with an invasive growth pattern, occurred in the masticator space of a 46-year- old male patient. Magnetic resonance imaging of paranasal sinus/nasopharynx revealed a well-defined, lobulated heterogeneous mass with high signal intensity and dense calcification in the masticator space between the left mandible ramus an

Deep somatic soft tissue leiomyoma is a rare benign smooth muscle tumor, with around 60 cases reported thus far in the literature. Herein, we report a huge leiomyoma in deep somatic soft tissue with massive calcification in the peroneus longus muscle. A 29-year-old male patient presented with a hard, spindle-shaped, 15-cm-diameter mass of the left lower leg. Plain radiography showed marked calcification within the lesion, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-circumscribed lesion with strong contrast enhancement within the peroneus longus. A core needle biopsy was performed to rule ou…

Primary intracranial squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are rare and mostly associated with an intracranial epidermoid or dermoid cyst. Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare biphasic tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components and has not previously been reported as a primary intracranial tumor. Here, we present a case of a 60-year-old man with a primary intracranial sarcomatoid carcinoma, arising from the remnants of the previously resected epidermoid cyst in the cerebellopontine angle. The resected material had portions of an epidermoid cyst lined by normal and dysplastic squamous

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyoma is a prevalent benign tumor arising from the smooth muscle cells of the uterine wall, profoundly affecting women's reproductive health and overall quality of life. Despite extensive studies on hormonal and molecular genetic mechanisms, its pathogenesis remains incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that cytokines, growth factors, and immune-hormonal interactions may play a key role in tumor progression and recurrence. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of imaging, immunological, and hormonal markers in the assessment of antitum
