Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction and the presence of restricted, repetitive behaviors. Additionally, difficulties in sensory processing commonly occur in ASD. Sensory abnormalities include heightened or reduced sensitivity to pain, but the mechanism underlying sensory phenotypes in ASD remain unknown. Emerging evidence suggests that microglia play an important role in forming and refining neuronal circuitry, and thus contribute to neuronal plasticity and nociceptive signaling. In the present

OBJECTIVE: Increasing literature reported higher rates of psychiatric disorders in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as of autistic-like features in social and cognitive functioning. However, little attention has been paid to the association between autistic traits (AT) and global functioning in this population. The aim of the present work was to investigate clinical and functional correlates of AT among parents of ASD children, with a specific focus on ruminative thinking.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty parents of ASD children were assessed by the Structured C

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by severe and persistent difficulties in social communication and social interaction at multiple levels. Recently, metabolic disorders have been associated with most cases of patients with ASD. The aim of this study was to investigate, through a new and more sophisticated mass technique, such as UHPLC-mass spectrometry (Q-exactive analyzer), alteration in metabolisms analyzing ASD children urine samples from children showing simultaneous vitamin B6, B9 and B12 deficiencies. This in order to study how these concurrent deficiencies may influence so

A common neurodevelopmental disorder, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is defined by specific patterns in social perception, social competence, communication, highly circumscribed interests, and a strong subjective need for behavioral routines. Furthermore, distinctive features of visual perception, such as markedly reduced eye contact and a tendency to focus more on small, visual items than on holistic perception, have long been recognized as typical ASD characteristics. Recent debate in the scientific community discusses whether the physiology of low-level visual perception might explain such

BACKGROUND: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder of unknown etiology. The amygdala has long been a site of intense interest in the search for neuropathology in autism, given its role in emotional and social behavior. An interesting hypothesis has emerged that the amygdala undergoes an abnormal developmental trajectory with a period of early overgrowth in autism; however this finding has not been well established at young ages nor analyzed with boys and girls independently.
METHODS: We measured amygdala volumes on magnetic resonance imaging scans from 89 toddlers at 1-5 years

BACKGROUND: Safety behaviours have been shown to be a key maintaining factor in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). In adults, a two-factor structure of safety behaviours reflecting 'avoidance' and 'impression-management' types has been identified. This has not yet been investigated in adolescents.
AIMS: We set out to investigate the factor structure of safety behaviours in relation to adolescent social anxiety symptoms and SAD, the extent to which this varies by age, and then to examine the association between the derived factor scores and other social anxiety related phenomena.
METHOD: Question

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by changes in social interactions, impaired language and communication, fear responses and presence of repetitive behaviours. Although the genetic bases of ASD are well documented, the recent increase in clinical cases of idiopathic ASD indicates that several environmental risk factors could play a role in ASD aetiology. Among these, maternal exposure to psychosocial stressors during pregnancy has been hypothesized to affect the risk for ASD in offspring. Here, we tested the hypothesis that preconceptiona

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex, polygenic and heterogenous neurodevelopmental conditions. The severity of autism-associated variants is influenced by environmental factors, particularly social experiences during the critical neurodevelopmental period. While early behavioral interventions have shown efficacy in some children with autism, pharmacological support for core features - impairments in social interaction and communication, and stereotyped or restricted behaviors - is currently lacking. In this study, we examined how the social environment influences both wild-type (WT) an

BACKGROUND: Youth exposure to gun violence is increasing and we must better understand its impact on mental health and substance use disorders in young adults.
METHODS: The 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey recruited n=1,008 young adults. Multivariable logistic regressions were used for mental illness and substance use disorder outcomes on exposure to gun violence in childhood while controlling for sexual and gender identity, race/ethnicity, age, and social ladder.
RESULTS: Exposure to gun violence in childhood is highly prevalent (24.7%) and associated with higher odds of depression (AOR

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorders (TD) commonly co-occur. Clarifying the psychiatric comorbidities, executive functions and social adjustment difficulties in children and adolescents of ADHD with and without TD is informative to understand the developmental psychopathology and to identify their specific clinical needs. This matched case-control study compared three groups (n=40 each) of youths aged between 8 and 16 years: ADHD with co-occurring TD (ADHD+TD), ADHD without TD (ADHD-TD) and typically developing community controls. Both ADHD groups had more co-occur

Moving in early career from public health physician to psychiatrist gives me a public health view of psychiatry and an interest in pursuing the goals of widening access to community-based services for people with mental disorders and promoting mental health in communities. Training in social medicine in the UK and psychiatry in Australia lead to studies of homelessness in people living with psychotic disorders, the health of family caregivers, assessing quality of life and mental health promotion.Work with the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Western Pacific Region and the World Psychiat

Daily living skills (DLS), such as personal hygiene, meal preparation, and money management, are important to independent living. Research suggests that many individuals with autism spectrum disorder exhibit impairments in daily living skills relative to their cognitive skills. This study examined predictors of daily living skills attainment and trajectories of daily living skills in a longitudinal sample referred for possible autism spectrum disorder and followed from 2 to 21 years of age. Consistent with previous studies, participants with autism spectrum disorder and nonspectrum diagnoses s

The influence of community-level indicators in understanding mental health has been of interest since the seminal work of Faris and Dunham (1939). The emergence of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and concepts such as social capital and recovery add new tools and concepts for further explorations in this area. This correlational study uses an innovative GIS approach to examine the relative contribution of community indicators, such as crime, unemployment, social capital, and individual-level sociodemographic characteristics, such as gender, age, and experience of homelessness, to the well

OBJECTIVE: The study examined the association between fidelity of programs to the assertive community treatment model and client outcomes in dual disorders programs.
METHODS: Assertive community treatment programs in the New Hampshire dual disorders study were classified as low-fidelity programs (three programs) or high-fidelity programs (four programs) based on extensive longitudinal process data. The study included 87 clients with a dual diagnosis of severe mental illness and a comorbid substance use disorder. Sixty-one clients were in the high-fidelity programs, and 26 were in the low-fide

RATIONALE: Structural racism is a primary avenue for the perpetuation of racial health disparities. For Black Americans, both historically and contemporarily, the neighborhood context serves as one of the most striking examples of structural racism, with stressful neighborhood contexts contributing to the well-documented inequalities in psychological functioning among this population.
OBJECTIVE: Thus, in this study, we adapted an intersectional-ecological framework to investigate the links between community stress and multiple dimensions of mental-emotional health for Black men and women.

Childhood autism, Asperger's syndrome and atypical autism together make up autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) with a prevalence of 0.6-0.7%. These disorders are defined by qualitative impairments in social interaction, qualitative abnormalities in communication, and by restricted, stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests and activities. Many children or adolescents with ASDs have sensory abnormalities, neurological disorders and additional disabilities of vision, hearing or ambulation. Psychiatric co-morbidity is common. Diagnostics and rehabilitation are implemented in multi-pro

Autism spectrum disorder is made up of several disorders, which include autism, Asperger syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls with autism spectrum disorder, and symptoms usually become apparent by the age of three. Autism spectrum disorders' core characteristic features are abnormal interaction, impairment in communication, and stereotyped behaviors with restricted activities and interests. There are also non-core features associated with autism spectrum disorder, and these are aggression, self-injurious behavior, and tantru

OBJECTIVE: Globally, rates of metabolic disorders continue to climb, leading to significant disease morbidity and mortality. Individuals with mental illness are particularly prone to obesity, and some medications, such as antipsychotics, may increase the risk for metabolic disorders. The American Psychiatric Association and the American Diabetes Association recommend that patients taking antipsychotic medications receive regular screening for metabolic disorders. This study examined hospital and community factors associated with screening these patients for such disorders.

AIM: Imitation provides a foundation for acquiring a wide range of knowledge and skills; accordingly, early imitation may contribute to the development of later adaptive behavior encompassing conceptual, practical, and social skills. The present study examined whether imitation at 14 months predicts adaptive behavior at 8 years of age in a general population sample.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Hamamatsu Birth Cohort for Mothers and Children (HBC Study), a prospective birth cohort of children in Japan (n = 724). Adaptive behavior at 8 years of age was assessed using the Vineland Adaptiv
