Mass Gatherings and Respiratory Disease Outbreaks in the United States - Should We Be Worried? Results from a Systematic Literature Review and Analysis of the National Outbreak Reporting System.

BACKGROUND: Because mass gatherings create environments conducive for infectious disease transmission, public health officials may recommend postponing or canceling large gatherings during a moderate or severe pandemic. Despite these recommendations, limited empirical information exists on the frequency and characteristics of mass gathering-related respiratory disease outbreaks occurring in the United States. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review to identify articles about mass gathering-related respiratory disease outbreaks occurring in the United States from 2005 to 2014. A s

Design of a randomized controlled study of a multi-professional and multidimensional intervention targeting frail elderly people.

BACKGROUND: Frail elderly people need an integrated and coordinated care. The two-armed study "Continuum of care for frail elderly people" is a multi-professional and multidimensional intervention for frail community-dwelling elderly people. It was designed to evaluate whether the intervention programme for frail elderly people can reduce the number of visits to hospital, increase satisfaction with health and social care and maintain functional abilities. The implementation process is explored and analysed along with the intervention. In this paper we present the study design, the intervention

Work-related psychosocial risk factors and risk of disability pension among employees in health and personal care: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have suggested that psychological factors at work contribute to early retirement due to disability pension in the general working population. Disability pension is a problem that shortens working careers among nursing professionals and personal care or related workers, but few researchers have focused on these occupational groups. Also, a need for studies based on measurements of specific work exposure instead of combined measures has been identified. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to study the potential influence of work-related psychosocial risk factors on the future risk o

Mechanism-based groups of children with ADHD are associated with distinct domains of impairment.

Person-oriented analyses are commonly used to identify subgroups of children with mental health conditions in the hopes that they will meaningfully inform the taxonomy, assessment, and treatment of psychological disorder. However, whether these data-driven groups are demonstrably better at predicting important aspects of adaptive functioning than standard DSM taxonomy has not been established. Using Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD) as a model condition, we utilized dimensions of personality and cognitive ability to identify person-centered profiles of school-aged children (N=246

Effects of digital exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on body image and social distance of postoperative patients with breast cancer: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Modified radical mastectomy is a widely used operative method for patients with breast cancer. Although it can significantly improve the survival rate, it can also lead to various adverse reactions, such as the loss of sexual characteristics, skin damage, and hair loss, which in turn can cause body image disorders and social avoidance among postoperative patients. Exercise therapy and cognitive behavior therapy are frequently employed as rehabilitation treatments to increase the mental well-being and stress coping styles of patients with breast cancer. However, no studies have dire

Reducing intersectional stigma among transgender women in Brazil to promote uptake of HIV testing and PrEP: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial of Manas por Manas.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, transgender ('trans') women experience extreme social and economic marginalisation due to intersectional stigma, defined as the confluence of stigma that results from the intersection of social identities and positions among those who are oppressed multiple times. Among trans women, gender-based stigma intersects with social positions such as engagement in sex work and substance use, as well as race-based stigma to generate a social context of vulnerability and increased risk of HIV acquisition. In Brazil, trans women are the 'most at-risk' group for HIV, with 55 times

Effects of Perceived Social Support on Health-Related Quality of Life in Asymptomatic and Symptomatic People Living with HIV in China: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in people living with HIV (PLWH) is one of the critical goals of HIV prevention and control in the following decades, and perceived social support (PSS) has always exhibited a positive influence on patients' HRQOL. This study aims to describe the gap in social support in improving HRQOL between symptomatic and asymptomatic PLWH. METHODS: By analysing secondary data from an online survey, a multicenter, descriptive and crosssectional study was conducted. The correlation trend and differences between PSS and HRQOL among asymptomatic an

The relationship between HIV-related stigma and HIV self-management among men who have sex with men: The chain mediating role of social support and self-efficacy.

HIV infection becomes a manageable disease, and self-management is one of the key indicators of achieving optimal health outcomes. Men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV face many psychosocial challenges when managing HIV infection, such as sexual minority pressure and HIV-related stigma. Higher perceived HIV-related stigma had been related to low self-management. However, the mechanisms underlying the association between HIV-related stigma and HIV self-management are unclear. Two possible mediators include social support and self-efficacy. This study aimed to examine the relationship

Analysis of the involvement of the thyroid gland using computed tomography in patients with suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS and Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) are contemporary epidemics associated with significant social stigma in which communities affected suffer from social rejection, violence, and diminished quality of life. OBJECTIVE: To compare and contrast stigma related to HIV/AIDS and EVD, and strategically think how lessons learned from HIV stigma can be applied to the current EVD epidemic. METHODS: To identify relevant articles about HIV/AIDS and EVD-related stigma, we conducted an extensive literature review using multiple search engines. Maternal childhood emotional abuse and prosocial behavior in Chinese preschoolers: Roles of parenting and children's social information processing.

BACKGROUND: Although maternal history of childhood emotional abuse (CEA) has been found to increase offspring's vulnerability to psychopathological symptoms, its intergenerational association with adaptive behaviors remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: Using a multi-informant longitudinal design, this study examined the intergenerational association between maternal CEA and prosocial behavior in preschool children, and further assessed the sequential mediating roles of mothers' use of psychological aggression and children's social information processing (SIP). The Grief Navigation Trial: A multi-site pragmatic comparative effectiveness trial of two interventions to support parents after their child's unexpected or traumatic death.

BACKGROUND: In the US, ~60,000 people <25 years old die annually. Forty-five percent of pediatric deaths occur traumatically, and the parents' or caregivers' (hereafter 'parents') sole contact with the healthcare system is often the coroner or medical examiner (ME). Parents experience mental and physical health problems following their child's death. There are no evidence-based interventions for MEs supporting bereaved parents. Scalable, systems-level interventions are needed to connect bereaved parents to grief and social care support. This research will build upon the experience of Missing P

Perseverative thinking, threat interpretation bias, and emotional reactivity as mediators between adverse childhood experience domains and psychopathology: A longitudinal mediation study in a cohort of Swiss emerging adults.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are robust predictors of negative mental health outcomes and psychosocial difficulties, yet the psychological mechanisms linking ACEs to later psychopathology remain only partially understood. Drawing on a three-wave longitudinal study of Swiss emerging adults (N = 1934), we conducted longitudinal mediation analyses to examine emotional processing (emotional reactivity, perseverative thinking) and social information processing (threat interpretation bias, rejection sensitivity) as pathways from ACEs to psychopathology. Factor analyses identified three disti

Parental coping with the diagnosis of childhood cancer: gender effects, dissimilarity within couples, and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Considering coping as dynamic process within the family, effects of gender and diagnosis are investigated. Dissimilarity within couples in coping with childhood cancer is studied longitudinally in its effects on quality of life of mothers, fathers, and the sick children. METHODS: A total of 108 parents out of 54 complete families participated in a prospective study. Twenty-five families had a child newly diagnosed with cancer, 29 families had a child newly diagnosed with juvenile diabetes or epilepsy. Childhood maltreatment and social cognition deficits across the psychosis spectrum: Evidence from the PREGAP study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment (CM) is common in early psychosis and may contribute to social-cognitive difficulties beyond illness-related processes. We examined whether CM explains unique variance in social cognition across psychosis stages, whether specific CM subtypes map onto distinct social-cognitive domains, and whether associations vary by clinical stage. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 107 participants: 39 with first-episode psychosis (FEP), 35 at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR-P), and 33 healthy controls (HC). CM was assessed using the Childhood Tr

Bowel and bladder control of children with myelomeningocele: a Nordic study.

The urinary and bowel control was studied of 527 children with myelomeningocele aged between four and 18 years. Information was obtained from medical records and by parent questionnaire. 44 had normal urinary control, 50 had a urinary diversion and the remaining 433 had neuropathic bladder without urinary diversion, of whom 31 per cent expressed their bladder manually and 40 per cent used clean intermittent catheterisation (CIC). 60 per cent needed assistance emptying their bladder. Children using CIC were more continent and needed less help, but were more often treated with antibiotics. Of th

Use of chemical communication in the management of freshwater aquatic species that are vectors of human diseases or are invasive.

Chemical communication occurs when both originator (signaller) and one or more receiver(s) possess specializations for chemical exchange of information. Chemical information can be used by a wide variety of species to locate food and mates, avoid predators and engage in social interactions. In this review, we focus on chemical signalling between mates or cues from nest sites or hosts by selected aquatic pest species and indicate how chemical information can be used to manage pests. The pests are vectors of disease (blood-sucking insects) or invasive species (crayfishes and fishes) that have ex

How to increase first-time donors' returns? The postdonation letter's content can make a difference.

BACKGROUND: Retention of first-time donors is pivotal for blood collection centers. The present study built on research showing the importance of donor identity among regular donors and sought to compare the effectiveness of various communication strategies on return rate. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Postal letters were sent to a large sample of first-time whole blood donors (N = 1219) a few weeks following their first donation. Four versions of this letter were differently constructed in a way to boost the acquisition of donor identity (i.e., by including information about their ABO and Rh(D)

Psychosocial Motivators for Moderate Drinking among Young Asian Flushers in Singapore.

Asians are more susceptible to alcohol flush syndrome and its associated health risks because they are genetically predisposed towards it. Guided by the theory of planned behaviour, this research examined the psychosocial factors associated with moderate alcohol consumption, in order to inform the development of a health campaign targeting young Asian "flushers" in Singapore. We employed a mixed-method design comprising an online survey and focus group discussions. The survey results identified perceived behavioural control as the most salient belief associated with moderate drinking intention
