Lower LEDD and Polypharmacy Rates Beyond the Honeymoon Period in Patients With Parkinson's Disease Integrative Western-Korean Medicine Interventions: A CARE-Compliant Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder with significant social costs, mainly owing to hospitalization, which is frequently associated with high levodopa equivalent daily dose (LEDD) and polypharmacy rather than neurological symptoms alone. Integrative treatment combining Western and Korean medicine may help control these factors and reduce the need for hospitalization. We investigated the potential impact of integrative treatment on LEDD and polypharmacy in patients with PD > 5 years postdiagnosis. METHODS: Fifteen patients with PD (KCD code

"Using the same hand": The complex local perceptions of integrated one health based interventions in East Africa.

BACKGROUND: Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) such as soil transmitted helminths (STH) and human rabies represent a significant burden to health in East Africa. Control and elimination remains extremely challenging, particularly in remote communities. Novel approaches, such as One Health based integrated interventions, are gaining prominence, yet there is more to be learned about the ways in which social determinants affect such programmes. METHODOLOGY: In 2015 a mixed method qualitative study was conducted in northern Tanzania to determine community perceptions towards integrated delivery o

Social Comparison Features in Physical Activity Promotion Apps: Scoping Meta-Review.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone apps promoting physical activity (PA) are abundant, but few produce substantial and sustained behavior change. Although many PA apps purport to induce users to compare themselves with others (by invoking social comparison processes), improvements in PA and other health behaviors are inconsistent. Existing literature suggests that social comparison may motivate PA for some people under some circumstances. However, 2 aspects of work that apply social comparison theory to PA apps remain unclear: (1) how comparison processes have been operationalized or harnessed in existing

Public healthcare system preparedness and community perceptions on comprehensive preconception care service delivery in Maharashtra, India.

Background and objectives Preconception care (PCC) comprises a set of biomedical, behavioural, and social interventions provided before conception to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. PCC remains a critical missing link in the continuum of reproductive healthcare in India. This study assessed public health-system preparedness and community perception related to PCC service delivery in Maharashtra. Methods A mixed-method, pre-intervention situational analysis was conducted to assess public health-system preparedness and community perceptions regarding PCC service delivery in selected dist

High support housing for people with serious mental illness in Canada: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health supportive housing aims to provide accommodation and support services to people with serious mental illness (SMI). Various supportive housing models have emerged in Canada post-deinstitutionalization, with heterogeneous and limited available information on congregate-based high support housing models (HSH) that provide 24/7 onsite supports. A registered scoping review was undertaken to identify the models and outcomes of HSH for people with SMI in Canada, including those exiting homelessness. METHODS: Four academic databases (Medline, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL Plus)

Adopting self-measured blood pressure monitoring in underserved primary care settings: a qualitative study using customer discovery and value proposition principles.

BACKGROUND: Despite being recommended in clinical practice guidelines as an effective strategy to control blood pressure, self-measured blood pressure monitoring (SMBP) adoption in the US remains low with clear disparities among underserved patients. Our objective was to develop a prototype SMBP Clinical Integration Package to support the use of standard, cost-effective SMBP devices requiring minimal technology investment for healthcare systems. METHODS: The I-Corps™ methodology, designed to promote the successful adoption of interventions, was used to create a value proposition and to conduc

Developing Problematic Performance Value Scores: Binding Routine Activity Performance, Environmental Barriers, and Health Conditions.

BACKGROUND: Community design features, such as sidewalks and street crossings, present significant challenges for individuals with disabilities, hindering their physical performance and social integration. However, limited research has been conducted on the application of Universal Design (UD) to address these challenges, particularly concerning specific demographic groups and population cohorts. Understanding the influence of environmental features on physical performance is crucial for developing inclusive solutions like UD, which can enhance usability and social integration across diverse p…

RICKETS AT THE MEDICI COURT OF FLORENCE: THE CASE OF DON FILIPPINO (1577-1582).

Among the children found in the crypt of the Grand Duke Giangastone in S. Lorenzo Basilica (Florence), the skeletal remains of a 5-year-old child still wearing his fine high social status clothing were recovered. This child of the Medici family was identified as Don Filippino (1577-1582), son of the Grand Duke Francesco I (1541-1587) and Giovanna from Austria (1547 - 1578). The prince showed several pathological deformities of the cranial and post-cranial skeleton, including enlargement of the cranium, thinning of the cranial vault bones (craniotabes), platybasia and marked bending of femora,

How the support of others helped me become who I Am: an interpretative phenomenological analysis of narrative interviews with young adults treated for childhood leukemia.

OBJECTIVES: Young adults treated for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (cALL) face unique developmental challenges. Social support is considered key to long-term adjustment, but we do not know how this occurs. Integrating the cancer experience into one's identity may promote positive adjustment. Our objective was to uncover the role of perceived social support in the integration of the cancer experience into the identity of long-term cALL survivors. METHODS AND MEASURES: Young adult survivors of cALL (n = 12, 9 female, age = 21.58 ± 3.12 years) were recruited from the long-term cancer fo

Protecting affiliation during pandemic crises: a capabilities approach for public health ethical deliberation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-pharmaceutical interventions that affected people's ability to access and maintain social relationships, which philosopher Martha Nussbaum calls "affiliation", were implemented. However, the WHO has reported that no measures to actively protect social relationships have been put in place. Furthermore, existing pandemic ethical frameworks do not explicitly specify affiliation protection as a relevant ethical consideration. Subsequently, the main aim of this work is to justify why pandemic public health ethical deliberation should aim at protecting people's capa

Effects of Ideological and Political Education and Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education on Self-Efficacy and Entrepreneurial Intention Among Chinese University Students.

The integration of ideological and political education (IPE) with innovation and entrepreneurship education (IEE) is a distinctive feature of Chinese higher education, yet empirical evidence on their combined contribution to entrepreneurial development remains limited. Drawing on social cognitive theory, this study examined the relationships between IPE, IEE, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention among undergraduate students from five universities in Northeast China. Structural equation modeling indicated that both IPE and IEE positively predicted entrepreneurial self-ef

Falls Do Not Just Break Bones--They Break Lives: World Spinal Cord Injury Day (September 5, 2025) and Indian Perspectives.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic condition that often results in lifelong disability, loss of independence, and profound social and economic consequences. While road traffic accidents remain a major cause, falls are increasingly emerging as a significant and preventable contributor to SCI, particularly in India. The theme of World SCI Day 2025--"Fall Prevention, Spinal Cord Protection"--highlights the urgent need to address this issue through proactive measures. Effective fall prevention requires a multipronged approach that combines home and community safety interventions, medical s

Body appearance values modulate risk aversion in eating restriction.

The understanding of eating disorders is hindered by the lack of integration between existing psychosocial and neurobiological approaches. We address this problem by developing a novel transdiagnostic and computational approach to eating restriction decisions. We first validated a novel paradigm which extends an established monetary risk task to involve body stimuli with psychosocial values. We used advanced behavioral data analysis of a large (total N = 539) sample of women from across the eating restraint spectrum, including those with anorexia nervosa (AN; n = 31), recovered from AN (n = 23

Neural circuits underpinning face tuning in male depression.

Reading bodies and faces is essential for efficient social interactions, though it may be thought-provoking for individuals with depression. Yet aberrations in the face sensitivity and underwriting neural circuits are not well understood, in particular, in male depression. Here, we use cutting-edge analyses of time course and dynamic topography of gamma oscillatory neuromagnetic cortical activity during administration of a task with Arcimboldo-like images. No difference in face tuning was found between individuals with depression and their neurotypical peers. Furthermore, this behavioral outco
